Would you really be surprised if executives think in "Oh, percentage of male viewers is going down, we are losing demographic!" manner? They seem to be rather stupid

I mean, why else would they think that gaining additional female viewers is a bad thing? Like, why would they lose merchandise sales from that? I wouldn't be surprised if executives have some kind of "Show has to produce these exacts numbers and percentages on this chart or we will consider it non profitable" thing going on.

The stereotype is that when women talk about shopping, they mean clothes.

Something I've noticed a lot of in children's media, and I'm not even sure who started this, is that it takes a different approach towards the sexes. Boys get GI Joe, and Transformers, and Ninja Turtles, and other stuff. Girls get Barbie, and Hannah Montana, and Polly Pocket, and Friends of Heartlake City. Boy's toys have weapons and some adventure element; girl's toys have simulations of real-world stuff. The impression I get is that media encourages boys to use their imagination and escape from the real world sometimes, while it encourages girls just to grow up; to practice shopping for clothes and dating and working at a job and cooking; not necessarily blatantly feminine functions, but definitely mundane ones. Even My Little Pony has been trying to get a piece of the real-world pie.

So I would be willing to accept the statement that girls don't buy as many toys as true, but would question whether it's a congenital behavior or merely conditioned by the fact that many of the media and toys girls do get aimed at them are urging them into a mindset with little room for toys. Furthermore, I'm not sure being vehemently pro-toy is a good thing. Yes; Young Justice got cancelled, but it held my interest consistently without any episodes I felt were dispensable. Looking at this show, with its awful pacing and liberal doses of MOTW episodes, I have to wonder if forced longetivity is a good thing.

LOL If they came out with Turtle figures that were entirely made of pink, and glitter shells, they'd probably actually sell to girls! And make sure the shell flips open to reveal lip gloss. (Sadly though, despite my sarcasm, with the sort of stuff that's directed at girls it would probably actually be true. I mourn for the depth and dignity of my gender...)

Oh god, the sad thing is that I can actually envision that. And y'know, for all of me, I've got no problem with pink-wearing lipgloss loving femmes - I just wish that wasn't the only option.

YES. I've got a good few costume hoodies (TMNT, Dragon Ball, Spider-Man, Wolverine, Superman, etc..) that my fiancee "borrows" all the time, and she wishes they made versions of them designed for women. And they do make a few - I've seen Wonder Woman and Batgirl - but it is slim pickings, and extremely limited in a way that the men's options aren't. Super annoying.

The lack of decent marketable merch is why I don't feel the slightest bit bad about buying bootlegged products.

If Nick/Viacom isn't going to make products that appeal to me, then I'll give my money to creators and fanartists that do. It's really as simple as that.

The Execs at Nick fought against a female protagonist for the sequel to "Avatar: The Last Airbender," and have never released action figures for some of their more popular female characters from "Avatar."

There's far less stigma for girls liking boy things than there is for boys liking girl things, and that's really what's causing the problem. The moment girls like a thing it runs the risk of socially emasculating the boys who like it.

Which is why, despite the criticism, I think the My Little Pony thing is rather interesting and hopefully a start in the right direction. Those guys should be just as free and open to like the Ponies as some of us ladies are with our Turtles... granted for us this isn't new territory.

And specifically offered so you can order the exact same design in men's or women's style shirts, instead of one design being offered for men and another "girlified" version being offered for women.

Sometimes couples want to have matching shirts of the things they're fans of. If the official licensors aren't gonna provide that option, we'll find it elsewhere.
