"#1 Movie" of last weekend is pretty meaningless. What, it went up against X-Men: Apocalypse in its third week and won? What a victory.

Raph was a hot head in Mirage, not so much in the Fred Wolf cartoon, so Raph character feels much more Mirage inspired than Fred Wolf. Donatello is another character who doesn't resemble their FW counterpart whatsoever. Leonardo and Michelangelo may slightly resemble their FW counterparts, but they aren't pinned down into characatures. Leonardo shows he likes to goof around in the opening "meditation" scene and we see Mikey taken down a notch when Splinter goes missing. They feel rounded and natural, unlike the FW cartoon (and sadly, most tmnt incarnations) where the turtles seem glued to "nerd, leader, goofball, and jerk", with no wiggle room. The Mirage turtles felt well-rounded and so did the 1990 movie turtles, imo. The plot is a straight rip from the Mirage books, as we both know. Sure, they integrated Danny but it works well enough and gives us a parallel to the issues the turtles are facing. You mention "feel and tone" which are a bit abstract to argue, but i would definitely say the movie had the "feel and tone" of Mirage - the dark streets, rundown buildings, and gritty filter they used to film all absolutely scream Mirage comics to me and remind me of those old scratchy, inky issues. TMNT 1990 is not only as close as we are going to get to Mirage, but it's also as close as we need to get. Would I take a film more in line with RTNY or CAW? Definitely, but this film definitely carries the spirit of those early Mirage issues and adapts them quite faithfully considering the transition from page to screen can be strenuous. I'd be remiss if I didn't mention that Kevin seems to heavily share this view as well and he created the darn thing. I've given my own points but I feel it's worth mentioning. So were TMNT III AND TMNT 2007 when they released. They still underperformed and didn't get sequels.

#1 movie has lost it's meaning over the years. It's an emptier title than Executive producer.

Those were different times back then, the suits and the CGI at the time was expensive to produce, in today's world, everything is digital and easier to make.

1. TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES: OUT OF THE SHADOWS - $2,841,228 2. X-MEN: APOCALYPSE - $2,428,013 3. ME BEFORE YOU - $2,137,067 An underperforming blockbuster in its second week and a drama-romance with a much smaller opening. And it's barely holding its own against them. That is a massive Monday drop: 71% down. To compare, the 2014 movie's first Monday brought in $6,670,138, with a 62.6% drop. Oof. Not many smiles at Paramount over these numbers, I'm sure.

I think it's still a bit early to tell (overseas stuff)...but:

Of course, it'd mean no studio would want to touch the TMNT property for quite a while, but 'no TMNT movies' is sooo much better than the garbage we have now. |

Oh sure. But there also aren't any pro Chinese elements(unless people haven't been talking about them), like that one Transformers movie that was basically a Chinese ad at one point.
Dear god I'd be just fine with this. |
