It's more mature and less destructive to joke about each others' differences than to let those differences provoke unnecessary fights. And I don't think they were at all ignorant of one another, they acknowledged each other very well and chose to be more mild-mannered in dealing with their problems than in the new toon.

In light of the circumstances the turtles have to live under, in either cartoon, they're kind of forced to be more mature than is normal for their age. Besides, half that stuff they say about teenagers is bull**** anyway.

Oh I'm not talking about what "They" say about teenagers. I'm talking about what I think about teenagers. And I think the guy sin the OC do have a certain maturity from having to live like they do, but it's not totally out there for them to act like teenage brothers. They still have a ways to go. You can see the development throught the whole series.

One of the "negative" aspects of the TMNT according to the 80's media hater who wrote the anti-TMNT book and Turmoil in the Toy-box is that the the TMNT was a gang, and the OT portrays that more than the NT, which goes more familial. The OT TMNT never called each other "brothers" and Splinter seldom called them "sons" instead opting for "friends" and "students." I hate to say it, but the OT TMNT weren't a family, but more like Spawny said "a fearsome fighting team."
That said, I'll go on to my thoughts on my favorite Turtle from both series meeting each other: Raphael: OT Raphael would try to crack the tough exterior of NT Raph and I think only OT Raphael could do it. Mikey tries, but only Raphael may know Raph well enough to make Raph laugh or "come out of his shell," pardon the Pun. I kinda wonder what the NT Turtles would think of the OT Turtles not calling each other by the "nicknames." I mean there's another point to the "OT TMNT aren't as familial as the NT."

Well, I wouldn't take my advice from a source like that. Besides, I already said that the OT turtles showed that they cared for one another and they enjoyed doing things together and spending time together just like brothers. And like I said earlier, actions speak louder than words.

Yes I agree about not using that book for my opinion, and I don't like the "Gang" discription either, The 90's movie, which also comes under fire, has the family dynamic out there as opposed to a gang feel, in fact the Foot "gang" family is condemned. I'm just saying that the TMNT in the OT were more good friends who would fight for each other and care for each other.

Yeah, the familial stuff is easier to spot with hindsight. The new toon wares it on it's sleeves. Not just with actually acknowledging each other as family but with the brotherly squabbling. Raph (Both of him) would probably hate the other. Or not like each other all that much. OT Raph thinks NT Raph needs to lighten up, NT Raph hates a smart ass. Although they're both sarcastic. That's how I'd play it anyway, maybe with them earning each others respect after averting whatever crisis. Maybe he'd get on better with Red Sky Raph.
On the whole I see the thing like that episode of Futerama where they discovered a parallel universe and the box that contained their universe in a box that contained the parallel universe. NT Don: I must have accidently created an entire parallel universe! OT Don: Baldercrap! All you created was my fist parallel to your face!

I still believe they were well aware of their differences. Also, I don't honestly believe all brothers have to fight a lot in order to be very close to one another. The OT turtles seem to appreciate each other and bond very well without fighting. Maybe fighting is part of growing up, but the whole point of this part of growing up is to learn how to avoid fights (as often as possible anyway); if they already know how to do that, that means they've already grown up in this area. But there have been some moments where the OT turtles fight too, you know, so they ain't perfect, but they're still more grown up in this area than the NT turtles.

Eh... yeah. I didn't really consider the Turtles a family unit until I saw the first movie (never read the comics), where the idea of family was nice and strong. So in hindsight, I can say "oh yeah... they were a family."
NT definitely carries the familial theme. Brothers, sons, father. April as surrogate mother-sister. And I love the emphasis that they put on that in the NT show... that core element drew me to it and got me re-addicted. My sister and I fought all the time when we were younger... we don't so much anymore. But then, we were together ALL the time when we weren't at school. The Turtles, on the other hand, spend more time together than my sister and I ever did back in the day (except in the summer). That constant togetherness can lead to general annoyance, tension, and blow-ups when at least one person has had enough of the others. Add the fact that our heroes are all teenage males with testosterone in their system... ya gotta wonder why the OT Turtles didn't lose their cool with each other more often. It does help, of course, that OT Raph is way more laid back than NT Raph. A lot of tension in the family revolves around Raphie-boy.

Interestingly enough, upon my recent acquisition of a MIP Mutagen Man figure (from a coworker no less!), I began thinking how cool Mutagen Man would be in the 2K3 series. This led to me wondering what it would be like if, say, via the Battle Nexus or something, the characters of the OS toon crossed over to the 2K3 toon - animation style, voices, and everything! Of course, that would be Hell to organize, but wouldn't it be a bitchin' series finale?

And OT Mike is way more laid back then NT Mike... And OT Leo is not as moody as NT Leo. Actually, the one to cause trouble in OT would've been Don, although not much happened... but he did patronize his brothers quite a lot. One episode I remember Don was bragging about how technology was superior to ninjitsu and how he through technology could defeat Shredder all by himself if he wanted to... he was pretty smug that OT Don! |
