I think it at least should go for cartoon and comic characters.

When someones calls themselves fans they should know the origin of the character.
If a person don't know basic information about a character they are not a fan.

That is totally different though. That's seperation of art and artist right there. I might not know everything about Disturbed for example, but I like a lot of their songs and could sing a lot of them verbatum. That just makes you sound like a snob. Plenty of people were fans of Wolverine, for example, and before Origins I'm willing to bet a majority didn't even know he had bone claws. They're fans cuz they like the character, not cuz they know every little detail.

if someone didn't read the comics from 93 to 2000?, don't remember which year Apocalypse bonded him with Adamantium. they wouldn't know until Origin came out. And in the animated series I think he stated that the claws are not his own, they came with the Adamantium.

but with the Turtles, they always been turtles in every incarnation. But maybe his only memory of the turtles are the episode where Mikey turns into a human.

Not only that but Wolverine 'didn't have' bone claws until recently. It was a given they just came with the Adamantium fusing. When Magneto ripped the metal out of his body, they suddenly came up with 'oh wait, he had bone claws all along'. IMO it was cause it took so long for him to get his adamantium back, and well.. Wolverine without his claws for a few years.. so yeah.. give him bone claws....
