I feel the s-word should be censored though, that's really really really pushing it. I don't little kids should have to do that. That's why there are fan subbings, if you want that go watch that and let the little kids watch the censored anime, they're what it is meant for...

Anywho, I don't think it's the govt. that censors things, it's the shows and the channels. What channel would want a swearing cartoon on their saturday morning cartoon block? They'll displease people, causing to lose money, lest cartoons would want to be put on that saturday block, causing lost money, and ultimately the other competitors win.

End Rant

You'll learn in government class (if you have to take it in high school where you're from, that is) that it is indeed the government that regulates what can and what cannot be said. TV and radio is regulated because it uses public airwaves.

I'm basically saying that you'll learn that there are indeed limits to free speech.

Hold your horses, now! The girl who made that page is AGAINST that book; she's just doing it as kind of a slanderous slap in the face to the author.

But you're missing my point.

If a show has age-innapropriate language/subject matter in it, then it shouldn't be shown in a children's block at all. Or at the very least, show the uncut version at a later time in the day, when most kids have gone on to ride thier bikes or play with thier legos (or to bed, for that matter). Kinda like adult swim on Cartoon Network. Have a programming block deliberately for older teens and adults.

There seems to be a massive opportunity fbeing missed for the first non-cable network that starts showing prime time anime.

I dunno. I guess I wouldn't want the networks to actually make an effort or anything.

I agree with you Kameko! I love adult swim and adult-oriented anime! I don't even see the harm in mild swearing and VERY mild innuendo in even kids shows. Since most kids these days talk like sailors anyway!

Sailors, indeed. I couldn't believe it when, on my first day of High School, I got on the bus and promptly heard kindergartner (good gravy, I can't spell today at all!) using language that even I didn't yet use! (not that I'm particularly proud of my foul mouth, but you know what I mean...)

Yeah kids seem to be little brats now a days. One kid went by me and he must have been 4 or 5 and I said slow down because he was going fast on his bike and he said the "F" word and gave me "the finger". Unbelievable!

Exactaly why Kameko makes a great point: Non-cable networks really ARE missing a lot of viewers by not showing late night anime.

She also makes another good point, that the networks won't try. They know whats going to make them money, and what might not make them money. I think their going to stick to whats going to make them money 100% of the time.

To change it though, more people need to start watching late night anime, or writing to the networks (Use numbers. They like those. I'm sure someone can get the ratings for Adult Swim.) to show them there is a market for it.

I hate to play devi's advocate to this guy because I adore the TMNT, and cartoons in general, unfortunatelly, however, I saw first hand what it does to kids.
I have to say, I think the old TMNT did a great job screening violence, but as for the movie...
I have a wondeful nephew who is 2 and a half years old. He loves turtles, everytime he sees a turtle on TV he claps his hands. Being the TMNT fan that I am, I brought the first TMNT movie over when I was babysitting him.
At first it was great, he clapped when the turtles appeared, he hid nehind the couch when Shredder was talking, he danced to Ninja Rap. I was beaming with pride, I was creating a new generation of turtle fans, I was one proud auntie.
Once the movie was over, Danile (thats his name) ran into his room, and a few minutes later, he showed up with a t-shirt tied around his head, like a turtle bandana, and holding a broom, and with a loud ninja scream, he came charging at me and his mom, yeilding a broom like Donnie's bo.
We naturaly disarmed this little reptile and explained to him that fighting is not good. He nodded and agreed. A few moments later, the bandana was back on and he was throwing high kicks in the air challanging me to a fight. Of cause, he thought it was a game, and he could not understand why we were not happy with him, because he was doing what the turtles do, and they were the good guys.
I was very sad that one of my fave movies of all times had such an impact on him, having talking to many of my friends, it turns out it is very common with little kids, because little kids mimic, and I think sometimes we forget that, and forget that it's hard to explain to a two year old that it's ok for the turtles to fight the bad guys, but it's not OK to bash Auntie Susie with a broom...

Well, the mistake there was letting him watch something like that at 2 years old. The best thing to do is to wait until the age of 5 or so, because by that age a child has the cognative ability to ask questions before acting, while a 2-year-old does not. That's how it was with me; I never watched TV or any form of visual media outside the bounds of Sesame (sp?) Street until I was about 4 or 5. By then I was talking in complete sentences instead of the garblings of toddlers and was very inquisitive, just as a normal 5-year-old should be. Then again, I was naturally a calm kid at that age and could easily entertain myself with a piece of paper, more or less. I never threw a fit in public and was very content, but not spoiled; quite the opposite, in fact.

Then again, you're not his parent, so none of the blame falls on you at the moment. Just look at the first reply I made in this thread for a better explanation of what I mean; you'll need that kind of advice when you become a parent.

Reznorite420, I totally agree, I should have waited, and I think we have it under control now, thankfuly, at two, they also have very short memory. The thing is, my mom never censored what I watched, but she would just explain it to me so i didn't take it too literaly (just like what you were talking about), and also, I, as well, was more impressionable about things other than violence, I was more inclined to try to built stuff like the scientists in the shows i watched, or the politicians or the doctors or something, rather than the fighters. So I don't think anyone ever worried about it, Daniel is more active than I was at his age, and takes on to mimicing physical aspects of the stuff he watches. And I should have known that.

awhile ago a friend of mine was reading a book on CONSPIRACY THEORIES and one chapter was talking about the anti-christ or whatever and it listed Madonna, Barney, and the TMNT as being the anti-christs. I really didnt understand that (well, maybe barney... ) This book just reminds me of that ... LOL at his name being Phil Phillips thats the lamest name ive ever heard~

What amuses me is that this Philips dude actually sit and tally up "individual acts of violence" throughout the show....

Honestly now, how would you classify an individual act of violence? Would each punch be an individual act? Or a fight?

The article is entertaining to say the least. Ridiculous, but entertaining. On a side note, the girl that posted that on her web-site went to my college. Kind of ironic to see that addy on this forum.

This reminds me of all the Anti-Harry Potter stuff that has gone on over the past few years......

<My 2 cents>

Like Rez said, kids shouldn't be exposed to violence and yada yada until a certain age when they can ask questions and understand explanations.

And I disagree with "Phil Phillips" (btw, what kind of parent would name their kid that???) on the fact the TV is a mind control device. TV is entertainment and probably won't dictate anybody's behavior unless they are exposed to massive amounts of it, like the kids whose parents use TV as a babysitter.

</My 2 cents>

Thats why kids should be taught to love books, I am a big fan of reading to your kids every night, cause books allow the child to take things in more than one way... That has little to do with anything here, I just like to stick my 2 cents about the importance of reading to kids anychance I get

Whoa whoa...don't put words in my mouth now!

I never said anything about how kids ignore books today. I was an avid reader myself during those years before the age of 5. In fact, I was about 1 or 2 reading levels above my peers where I lived, so it's a mystery still to this day why I had to wait a year to start kindergarten...

While I don't read too many novels now, you can obviously see that I haven't been hurt by that fact yet. In fact, rather than read, I like to write stuff; I currently have 2 fanfic ides right now that I hope will rank among the top fanfics in the TMNT fanfic world (I'm currently writing one of them as we speak; expect one of them to be at least 30 chapters long).
