Nick April is better than Cardboard Megan Fox. Her powers are underplayed.

Yeah it was a play on the film Carrie. Who in the film had pretty much the same powers, but at a more powerful level.

Interesting topic! I was gonna put together a compilation fanvid where I show the times where either April "rescued" herself, or rescued the turtles for a change! Cuz there were a handful of times April either saved the day or saved them!

How about a general sense where April was shown trying? This is why I've never viewed her as a Damsel in Distress as she was usually in the wrong place at the wrong time. Getting down to it, OT April reminds me of Nick Kurtzman with the way he's gone out of his way to investigate the Kraang...like an investigative reporter does. OT April acted like an investigative reporter...putting her life in danger for the sake of a story and her career. She was super ambitious and wasn't easily intimidated.

Shredder comes after her, she insults him. Peach sees Bowser coming for her...nothing. "Oh well, Koopa's coming to kidnap me again...better prepare my Mario will save me speech while I stand here and not even attempt to fight."

Speaking of "Cardboard April"...

The "animation" in that European Vacation season, man...

Not sure, but.... Maybe Donnie made a mannequin of her? Or an April-bot for um, well, whatever reason he might use it for. Like that one Raph had in Mirage..... Okay, now we're going into some really weird territory. JK, but she sure looked "wooden" in those shots!

For all the times throughout the show's run when a turtle had to carry April to safety, that's probably the only instance I can remember when two turtles tried to carry her in that way, like Donatello was afraid her legs would get bent if Mikey turned a corner too sharply. That Dublin studio was weird.

Awesome observation, and I completely agree! There's this article I read about the various versions of April O'Neil recently...can't find the bookmark. Anyway, it goes on about how the OT April was more normal and more relatable. She wasn't someone that "had" to learn to fight just to be on par with the turtles. It's her personality in general that's so great. She's very strong-willed and brave, without having to be a ninja (I get really tired of EVERY version of April now that learns to fight, just simply to break the DiD trope). For example, when her, Vernon, and Irma would all get kidnapped at the same time, April was the strong one who'd fight back and snap remarks (like she did with Shredder). The other two, esp. Vernon, would wuss out. She's a gutsy reporter for a reason. I'd even go as far as to say that the other versions of April are more bland, personality-wise. I like reporter-April (OT and 1990 movie) the best.

As for my video compilation, if I put that together I'd try to show clips where she does show compassion towards the turtles (there were quite a few times). They kind of helped each other out --wasn't always them saving her all the time.

Agreed!
OT April gets way too bad a rap. Without her initiative, most episodes plots would have never even started. In her efforts to find a story, she's often the one who set the real story in motion.

A while back, I actually did a music video compilation of her under-appreciated skills behind the wheel:

I always thought that TMNT-carry-April scene was weird too. Why did Donnie grab her legs? In that first Bugman episode, Mikey literally rolled (tumbled..?) April out of the way before she got crushed! Seems like in this episode they had more time to both casually grab her and move her out of the way. I also agree the animation/artwork quality in those Euro episodes suffered.

Wow that's a cool music vid! Oh yeah, that's another thing that article mentioned - how OT April was very skilled at operating various machines (vans, helicopters, motorbikes, etc.) She also fixed the helicopter in one episode!

Seems like I read something like that once too. I think maybe the Nostalgia Critic praised her charaterization for such things when he did his "Top Damsels in Distress" episode (he used another word for it...) and he left OT April off the list on account of those things mentioned.

Anyhoo, here were my hopes on how the IDW comics might make use of April in their narrative from a few years back. At this point, I think both April and Casey Jones have fallen into the background of the narrative, but perhaps their upcoming mini-series will restore their prominence in the storyline.

Thanks! Yeah she did have skills at driving at least, but it was helpful nonetheless.
