I said that he's not a mantle for the most part in all interpretations outside of the original(Image having the mantle effect in Mirage), where Karai fit in perfectly as a Foot member that needed no connection to Shredder. "For the most part" was in reference to 2K3, where the title of Shredder is tossed about a bit, but there's still Utrom Shredder present throughout the entirety of the series.

If a TMNT incarnation either downplayed Saki or had him die relatively early on Karai's role as a member of a more globally based Foot would work, imo. Then there'd be room for Pimiko without any redundancy as well.

Agreed. IDW and Nick both seem to put the focus squarely on Leo and Don (especially Nick), with Mikey being "goofy" and Raph being "grumpy". That's about it.

but I wouldn't mind both Karai and Pimiko being in a tmnt show together

Pimiko wasn't around for very long and never had an opportunity to grow or develop as a character beyond a shifting of alliances. Karai has been around longer, in numerous forms of media, and has been interpreted differently across them.

So the question I don't think is really "Pimiko vs. Karai" (because there's no contest) but really more a question about Karai-herself, if you prefer her as an independent character or as a relative to Saki.

Karai's kind of like the Rat King, though, in that she's really different depending on which version of her you're talking about. It doesn't mean that one version is particularly "wrong", just that they're all so different you can't really narrow her down to a "base" concept that's consistent through each depiction.

At this point, the only thing linking all the Karai's together is "female Foot Clan member of high rank". A unifying theme used to be "sympathetic or willing to cooperate with the Turtles", but the IDW incarnation seems to have ruled that out (at least so far).

It's a matter of personal preference, then, which on is "better". I think each version of Karai has suited the universe she's appeared in. I agree that I wouldn't be down with her being Shredder's descendant in EVERY universe forever and ever, if only because it would stifle future creativity.

One thing I DON'T want to see is "starts out evil because Shredder told her so, develops sympathy for the Turtles, switches sides" in every incarnation. Pimiko went through that, 4Kids Karai went through that, Nick Karai is going through that.

If she gets narrowed down to a formulaic character arc, then Karai is going to get very boring. I feel the same way about Leatherhead. He's been pigeon-holed into being Discount Incredible Hulk and I'm really getting bored with it. Doesn't matter if you like Cajun Leatherhead or Space Wrestler Leatherhead; we just need him to get out of that tired Jekyll/Hyde rut and do something different.

Karai's been running the same shtick into the ground for the past 10 years, so I'd hope that she can break out of that trap at some point in the future.

I doubt that happened. It seemed like Karai was screwing with Casey. And by screwing I mean "messing with his head," not literally screwing.

I think Raph gets good focus in IDW - though Mikey is still pretty shafted. Honestly he has been in a majority of TMNT, with Image and 2K3 giving him some of the most focus I can recall.
