Season 1 is the cream of the crop for TMNT. It's essential.

Here is the final cover:

Lions Gate-Artisan has sent us the first officially circulated release with detailed information on the upcoming "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" (1987) DVD release. And we have GREAT news for you: An official running time of 110 minutes! Yes, that's right: as we reported last week, the studio was urged by many (including no less a person than the episodes' co-writer!) to bring us the entire, uncut pilot mini-series. With this official running time that represents the needed length for 5 uncut episodes, including that needed for individual opening- and closing-credits, the studio seems to be telling us that this is indeed what we are getting. THANK YOU, LIONS GATE-ARTISAN!

The press release that is being circulated has the following descriptions of the main programming and of the DVD Special Features:

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Volume One includes the first five episodes from the popular animated TV series, and the DVD features four additional never before seen bonus episodes. The first episodes introduce the turtles and their infamous foes, and explain how Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello and Raphael became Ninjas.

DVD Special Features: The DVD features four additional never before seen bonus episodes including The Return of Dregg, The Beginning of the End, Mobster from Dimension X and The Day the Earth Disappeared.

Further specs on this release include 2.0 Digital Stereo in English, video in the orginal "Full Screen" presentation, and the already-known SRP of $14.99 for the DVD, plus of course its release date of April 20th. Note that the press release officially is titled "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Season One", even though the "now finalized" cover art provided with it doesn't have the "Season 1" wording anywhere on it (or even the "Volume 1" wording used in the Program Description quoted from the press release above):

It's also worth noting that the spine of that cover art shows a "CC" logo, indicating that this release is Closed Captioned for the hearing impaired, but that the press release actually mentions that it's NOT captioned. Huh. Hopefully this is just a typo on the release, and we'll find that the cover shown represents the true situation with that.

Note that the new version of the cover - an enhanced version of what we showed you earlier - now features a bold banner at the top promoting that this release "Include 4 Never-Seen Bonus Episodes". There's a slight discrepency there, too, because the bonus episodes, as we reported previously, actually have been seen in some markets (including, I'm told, all of New York City). So, while it's possible that these might not be "never-seen" by some of you, we can all still appreciate that we are getting this bonus content. Note that those four episodes are the 1st, 2nd, 6th, and 7th parts of the 8-episode-long "Tenth Season" mini-series written by Jeffrey Scott to put the wraps on this 10-year-long show. The vast majority of us who have never seen these productions will definately appreciate having them on DVD, and we hope we get to see the rest soon, too!

Our sincere thanks to our friends at Lions Gate-Artisan for getting this info to us so quickly, and for being able to provide such great news that is sure to make fans of the Turtles very happy indeed. Despite what may seem like a couple of minor complaints above (nit-picks, really), this is a very exciting DVD release for many of us. Including fans like TVShowsOnDVD reader Errol Cleary; thanks for your great feedback on this "TMNT news tornado!" Stay tuned, of course, and if anything more comes up we'll be sure to let you know.

Well it's toned down a bit from the first version and now I find it more acceptable. IMO such happy images works for the original TMNT... even the first 5 episodes.

Many people will buy these disks because of the never before seen episodes blurb, and then they will notice that they've seen them before and they've been duped. Sounds like a marketing ploy to me...especially how it's written really big at the top of the dvd cover...

I dont feel its a marketing ploy.

To many they are "never-before-seen" episodes due to the limited channels that aired the shows at the end of its run.

I know I was really big into turtles from like 1988 to 1994 or so and these episodes came after.

For the kids that started with the TMNT and grew out of it or like myself lost track of it, they are unseen episodes. And for the people who watched it towards the end of its run, its almost as if the original 5 episodes were unseen. Its all at how you look at it.

The glass is half full

The fact remains that the did air in some places that were EASILY accessible by a good number of fans.

The glass is holding half its capacity.

Since they are doing it this way, they should have released all of season 10 with season 1. There are only 4 more episodes so that wouldn't have been a big deal.

That would throw it out of whack even more.

I guess it depends on your personal preference. It's already weird that they are releasing half of season 10 with the first season. They way they are doing it leaves a chance that they will skip episodes. And that would suck.

If they put all of season 10 on a season one disc, that would be absolutely weird.. They might as well put seasons 2 and 9 together next, then 3 and 8, 4 and 7, and 5 and 6. That would be the oddest release of a show ever.
But maybe they will put the other 4 "unaired" season 10 episodes on a season 2 disc.

That's why they should put season 10 all on its own disc, as I have mentioned I would happily fork over an extra $10 for.

And calling the episodes "never before seen" is a lie, whether or not the show did air in your area. No one on TMNT-L at the time, as I recall, had any trouble seeing the episodes. Even fans in Canada saw them.
