Don't you know that ninja turtles are aliens? They have high-density alien alloys that can stop bullets.

Thanks Andrew, Ray is doing an excellent job! I just wish I could clone the guy so I could finish all 13 chapters by Summer.

Looks like this project is running into financial trouble....

Loyal fans and everyone else who loves TMNT,

As you may or may not have known, I have personally paid for the development of DOTN up unto this point. I’ve managed to pay for the first two chapters, but I cannot afford anything more than this. It is an estimated cost of $15,000 per chapter for writing, pencils, colors, and letters. I use the word “estimated” because everything outside chapter 2 is not finalized and the page count may vary for the other chapters. There are 13 chapters in total, which means we have 11 more chapters to complete once the second is done. This is an estimated cost of $165,000 to complete the book. I’m not taking a single penny for myself or even trying to recoup the $30,000+ of my life savings I’ve already spent on this project. This book will be free to anyone who wants to read it!

I really really REALLY want to complete the book, but without some help, I will have to stop production after the second chapter is complete. If I were to get a Kickstarter page going, would you guys contribute? Would you pass it around to your friends? Naturally I would include as many incentives as I can, original art, signed sketches, printed copies when available, drawing your face on a character in the book, pinups, and more.

Let’s show the studios what the fans really want by finishing this book!!!

What do you guys think?

Best,
Luke Keith
I would like to see the story finished but $15,000 per chapter? Is that normal? That maybe reasonable in this industry but... yikes!

Wow, that's a lot of money to be thrown away on a fan project.

Indeed...quick, Bobby how much does it cost to produce (not even print...just produce) an issue of the IDW series?

$15,000 dollars for an estimated 30 pages a chapter (ok, I'm using the only finished chapter as a guage) that's $500 a page... Yikes, that's pricy. Heck, the TMNT fan MOVIE those 2 brothers want to do is cheaper to produce than finishing this comic. $40,000 for a movie or $165,000 for 13 30 paged "chapters" of a web comic? Really?

Wow, so many things I could say here.

I'll stick to this: If the projected total cost for a FAN project is $200,000, these guys shouldn't have even started. This is frankly horrible planning and budgeting. Even if I liked the story I would say this was a complete waste of money. The Casey Jones fan movie cost less than this.

Sounds to me like they heard about the recent Kickstarter for everything trend and decided to jump on and get some extra money.

OH BOY.

Hey, do you guys want to see the TMNT 1.1 motion comic some time soon. Well I started a Kickstarter for it...should only take Eleventy Bajillion Dollars to get it done. I mean that's a steal, really.

I started a kickstarter for these bitching sandals. It'll only take about 40 million to get them all made!

Show the studios what true sandals are about! A DUR FUR DURRR.

Damn, I'm doing it wrong. My self published comic book was $1500 to produce. And that includes the $1000 MacBook I bought.

I guess if I were doing full paintings, freelance, I'd charge around $500 a page. I mean I tend to charge half that for full color art and the stuff I do is pretty flat and basic.

I think the problem is when you have someone with passion and vision but no technical artistic skill, you gotta hire that part out.

I don't think Kickstarter would work for this. Based on my experience with them, they don't approve projects that look like copyright or trademark violations.

The above mentioned TMNT fan movie has a Kickstarter, so who knows.

No, it doesn't. It's on a site that's similar to Kickstarter, but is not Kickstarter.

They're doing theirs thru IndieGoGo which might be more lax about it... but not according to their FAQ:

"WHAT VIOLATES OUR TERMS? Anything that violates someone else's copyright, trademark or intellectual property"

Pretty clear cut. Raising thousands of dollars with someone else's intellectual property as the core of your project is a lot different than someone doing a fan film on their own time and their own dime.

Honestly, stuff like this frustrates me. I love the Ninja Turtles. But they inspire me to put time, effort and money into my own creative endeavors, not re-telling their story at great expense. Especially asking other people to cover those expenses.

Oh...whoops. My bad. I stand corrected. It's indiegogo.

You'd think since I posted the flippin' link to the thread, I'd at least know the site's name.

Yes, this. I really hope they don't actually try to get other people to pay for their mistakes.
