I'm keeping myself spoiler free for the most part, except for the things that are so big that are impossible to avoid or things from early trailers. I mean it's hard to be spoiler free about Finn holding the lighsaber, hope I don't read too many spoilers in this thread. I'm pretty much ignoring other forums Force Awakens discussions since I don't trust them.

Why? Because it's stupid. (Also Disney merchandising opportunities)

Also. Why can't Finn be a part of the Skywalker family or just be a jedi on his own?
I don't think Kylo Ren will be anything like Vader, they want these films to have their own identity. They have plenty of ways to merchandise Darth Vader with their cartoons or even spin-off films.

Finn can be a jedi on his own, it was just speculation from my part. I don't think he is part of the Skywalker family though.

Also, something I really hope this movie does is keep the Jedi factor smaller than the prequels, much like they did with the original ones. The prequels had WAY too much Jedi **** going on, and a lightsaber would pop up every 5 seconds. It just didn't feel like the world of Star Wars. If Luke established a new Jedi Order, I hope it's much smaller (maybe 30 members tops?) than what we saw in the prequels. I'd rather see the thing focused on the world of Star Wars (Fighter Jets, Kylo Ren, the path to becoming someone using the Force) rather than JUST about the Jedi with artificial environments.
Yeah I think both will be the main protagonists with somewhat equal screen time. It was probably a compromise since they wanted a strong black/female characters but were afraid the general audience wouldn't accept them so we have the other white guy who pilots the X-Wing. Having a lighsaber doesn't make you a Jedi.
30 Jedi is too many, I mean the prequels were full of Jedi buy I can't even name 30 that I know by name or even had a lot of screen time in the prequels. Having 3 or 5 throughout all the movies would be fine. I was ok with the prequels having a ton of Jedi, I mean they were set before the "dark" times. But yeah now I want a universe where there's more than one Jedi but not that many either.

Which was re-recorded by Hamill for the trailer. Come on, they wouldn't use that specific line in a trailer to hype up the movie if they didn't plan on having the skywalker line continue. In fact I think all the "main"movies will have Skywalker as a recurring theme. If not how will the spin-offs differentiate themselves after the New order is done for.

Well the child would not be a little more mixed. Why is it so impossible to finally have a pure black main character in the movies?

When I said 30 Jedi, I didn't mean 30 named Jedi, I meant that's the whole order. The Jedi Order had at least 200 members in the prequel, so it'd be nice to see it build up again, but not as the central focus.

Also, I hope they continue using the actual sets. The thing that made the first Star Wars trilogy so great was that it felt so damn realistic because of the sets. And now, seeing that they're not going green screen overboard like Lucas did, everything looks SUPER realistic.

I honestly don't remember the prequels.....and I've never really saw the original trilogy.....

but I loved Clone Wars (the tv series) and I like how the Jedi were like a system and there were lots of them ^_^

I never liked the idea of there being such few Jedi...because they were so cool! and it felt like a league of superheroes :3 (and the fighting was awesome~)

I'm gonna have to get used to seeing little Jedi in this new movie. (that's why I'm kinda hoping both Finn and Rey become Jedi)

The Jedi thing worked for Clone Wars because it DID focus on other things (Clones, Bounty Hunters, Droids, etc.) rather than JUST Jedi. Lucas thought that the only thing about Star Wars that people liked was the Jedi aspect, which is why he'd show a lightsaber every five seconds in the prequels. Trust me, watch the original trilogy and you'll understand what I mean by that. By having a diverse cast consisting of a Jedi, animal, droids, bounty hunter, and rebel, it really gives you a feel for the Star Wars universe rather than just the Jedi aspect of it.

Watch the original trilogy and then the prequels (You've gotta watch the prequels just to understand a few things. 1 and 2 are really bad, but the third one is actually pretty good, but it can't hold a candle to the original movies.). If you binge it all before 7, you'll feel much more prepared.

Spoiler:
Okay, all this is rumour of course, but I'm putting it in spoiler tags anyhow.

Rey is supposedly one of Leia and Han's children, but there is a reason for her not going by her actual name in the film.

Finn is supposedly Force sensitive, and finds Luke, and may be trained as a Jedi in the following films.

The lightsabre Finn is holding is supposedly the one Luke lost on Bespin, and having it found (a la the One Ring) is partly what starts the chain of the story. There was part in the trailer where Leia appears to receive it from Rey.

Han may well die in Episode VII.

Rey's last name hasn't been revealed, so maybe she has something to do with the Skywalkers OR another family?
Why on earth would you not think Rey is related to the Skywalker family? The whole point is to continue the lineage. We went from Anakin to Luke and now Rey, three characters in different generations.

Rey is the most promoted new character. Why can't she be the lead? Because she's a female? Its like people can't grasp the fact that we have a female star for the new Star Wars generation.

I honestly think people were expecting some other male lead or something rather than Rey because they don't want Star Wars to turn into a "chick flick" like The Hunger Games with Katniss.

I never said anything about Rey not being the protagonist because she's female. And I never said I don't think she's related, I said there's a possibility that she's not related. I honestly think that Rey and Finn will be the main protagonists rather than Finn or Rey being the singular protagonist, with Poe being the secondary protagonist. It's possible to have more than one protagonist. Take TMNT for example.

Well just like the original films had Luke, Han and Leia as the main leads but Luke was still more important. I mean Luke and Han practically got almost equal screentime in the original trilogy but Luke was still essentially the main star.

I expect Rey to get the most focus and whatever the major events or climax of the movie will be about her. Finn's role will likely be similar to Han's in the original film.

Ya know...I'm starting to feel like you just don't like the idea of Finn being the main character.....

Seems like alot of people are cool with Rey being the main character though...maybe I haven't seen enough opinions to really know.

but either way..... a black dude or a female...it's good representation.

and again who says they can't be co-stars?

Also according to info revealed when we meet Rey for the first time she's in a desert. Gee, sound familiar? (Anakin and Luke)

It isn't Tatooine though, some other desert planet.

This promotional material makes Finn look like the lead, but others make Rey look like the lead.

I don't know, I think Rey would be the lead if she's related to Luke/Leia to continue the lineage.

Finn has a lightsaber though. Lightsabers are most marketable thing in Star Wars. Of course that's going to be front and center.

Or he's the main character. That'd be fine too.

The fact that Darth Vader was stupid enough not to go back to Tattooine and visit a family with the Skywalker last name says a lot in itself.

Well that isn't anything new, also the name "Ben Kenobi" wasn't a particularly great choice. Do they ever mention Anakin's last name being Skywalker in the original trilogy? Of course these things don't make sense because Darth Vader and Luke's father were meant to be two different people until ESB was written. Tattoine was supposed to be this rebel planet that not many people cared about and only had some imperial presence there. In fact that isn't broken by the prequels too much either, mostly the EU or "Legends" were a bunch of things kept happening in tattoine.

I can somehow overlook it though, technically Vader and the Emperor thought Padme had died and so had the kid so they weren't actively looking for him and the Universe is a huge place to randomly find THE Kenobi they're looking for. I do admit keeping his last name as Skywalker is petty stupid since Anakin was a well known general which is why I asked if Vader is ever called a Skywalker.

To me the biggest problem and thing that bothers me from Star Wars are the relatively short time between ROTS and ANH. It just doesn't match with what happened, especially since the same amount of time later in the new movie and things haven't changed that much since the OT.

I forget, how old was Luke in the first film? Was he only 18 or in his 20's?

From RotJ...

Darth: The Emperor has been expecting you.
Luke: I know, father.
Vader: So, you have accepted the truth.
Luke: I've accepted the truth that you were once Anakin Skywalker, my father.
Vader: That name no longer has any meaning for me!
