Raphael or Raphael? - Page 3

I'd have to go with Comic Book Raphael. While the movies and more recent cartoons did a good job at making him look like a hothead, I feel only the comic book made his sudden bursts of "angryness" seem more like he has mental problems instead of just being angry, and I feel like this is an important part of his character, where he can just snap at anytime. The other Raphaels(aside from the TMNT Movie) don't really go deep there and just make him angry.

To prove my point, in the Comic, the first time they went to the farm, April said that, unlike the other turtles, she couldn't feel compassion for Raphael and was scared of him because of his personality. Not any other April would have said that, because the other Raphaels aren't presented as angry as him.

And while it might seem weird for me to prefer the Raphael that seems to be the most dangerous, I feel that's what gives him his own distinct personality, instead of just being the angry turtle.

Good point, and I agree, a potentially dangerous Raph (whom even an usually accomodating April can't really connect with) is interesting.

This is just a completely random, BS question, (there was actual discussion on this at work, and it was kind of interesting to see everyone throw out their own POV and the what if's) but on Heroes, there is the psychopath Sylar. Is the comic book Raph close or have the potential to be as psychopathic as Sylar, or is he already there?

He's not close, nor could he ever be close...because Heroes is written way better than TMNT is.

Raphael is one dimensional. He can only ever aspire to be the angst-ridden-loser-brother, and could never develop further than that.

Hmm, you wouldn't be Ryan whose the master engineer at Lightning Industrial, Technological and Defense, would you? Because you sound just like him. Except, he added the "if there were more competent writers for the comics, then Raph would be borderline to crossing that line of Schizophrenia)

I don't know either way. Don't read the comics. Friends tell me that as a fan of Raph, I wouldn't care much for the comics because he tends to get the shaft in them. How true is this?

Raph is borderline schizophrenic in the early comics. It's hinted at a few times in Volume 1. (Rapheal Micro-Series, "Return to New York," "Leatherhead Too.")

Depends on what you mean by "tends to get the shaft." Does he get the lime-light a lot of the time? Yes. Do his actions and anger have real consequences? Also, yes.

Your friends were probably referring to "Return to New York" and Volume 4. (And to a lesser extent, Volume 2 maybe?) The first is thematically important, and the latter...every Turtle gets "shafted" pretty hard in Volume 4.

What I meant by Raphael getting "shafted" is in terms of his character development and his role in helping the family out. Both cartoons and all of the movies have depicted a Raph that had his own intentions, but at the same time, is there to pull his weight for his brothers as needed. Friends have said he's not nearly as "heroic" in the comics.
