I didn't say publishers never do this; I said it would be unreasonable of them to do it. Quote:
And just in case there's any confusion, I'm not talking about "referencing" past events -- such as Barbara Gordon talking about being crippled (with a little asterisk pointing to a caption mentioning The Killing Joke) -- I'm talking about the folly of making collected editions required reading for new readers of a new series. THIS is what they should do -- get the readers interested in the original material. Not force them to buy more products when the new series is supposed to be an easy-entry, good-jumping-on-point kind of deal. |

I agree with you. I guess my point I'm trying to make is that it isn't necessary to build a new continuity out of concern for new readers not being in the know. A good example would be the movies. You can watch TMNT on its own without seeing the previous three films, but it's still within the same continuity. |

And at the risk of sounding redundant -- that's precisely what they did with Volume 3: they started with a completely new story that was very new-reader-friendly, but it still took place in the original universe. And as the series progressed, we began to see more and more references to that original continuity (such as the appearances of Leatherhead & the Triceratons). I'm sure IDW's decision to take the direction they've chosen is one that was very carefully considered, and I'm sure they're doing what they think is best given the various factors at play -- a new comic series, an upcoming Nick 'toon, Eastman's involvement, Mirage's rights with their continued publishing, etc. Hopefully their efforts turn out well. The irony of it all is with the Paramount/WB merger, this could very well happen again after 2028 (when IDW's license expires), unless they renew.

Do you have a source on the 2028 date?
