The turtles are going to be aliens?....Okay that's......uh....new? Strange? Weird?

I...have no idea what to say to this. I hate to judge a movie when close to nothing has been released on it, so I won't.

I’m sure the Turtles themselves won’t be aliens, as in a whole other species that just so happens to resemble Earth-bound turtles. I think what they mean is that the ooze that mutates them comes from another planet.

EDIT: I just saw that clip. Do you think maybe its just Michael Bay's innocent ignorance on the whole back story? Maybe he's just got it wrong? Or, maybe Earth-bound turtles get "infused" with the DNA of another race that resemble humanoid turtles?

Is there anymore of that clip anywhere?

I really hope that when he says "these Turtles are from an alien race" he's really refering to the Utroms.

Why would Nick/Viacom approve of such a script? They approved of the IDW origin where they were from Earth and the Nick show will probably have a normal origin as well.

Why the hell would they want the movie origin so different, if they want fans of those to see the comics and cartoons?

Because they don't care about fans, and are aiming this at kids who never heard of the Ninja Turtles.

So Nick wants 3 different origins going on between all the new stuff?

So much for brand unity. Down with Michael Bay.

Technically that's true, though, isn't it? Even in the Mirage material, they are technically "from an alien race." Specifically "from the byproduct of an alien race," but still from an alien race.

Because there's no longer any Kevin Eastman or Peter Laird to veto bad story/script after bad story/script.

Which isn't to say it'll be bad. If there's a larger than we're used to alien influence in the Bay TMNT but the rest of it is pretty badass and tonally faithful... should we throw the baby out with the bathwater? No, probably not.

No matter what, though, it's still really got me scratching my head that literally the first thing ever publicly released about the story of the new TMNT film is something that -- on the surface -- appears to completely fly in the face of everything people know and identify with in the Turtles. They want this to be the first nugget they throw out there, really? It just seems bizarre. I don't believe they'll not be mutants but it could definitely be read that way, but either way it's puzzling from a marketing standpoint... I mean, "they're aliens, folks!" is supposed to get people excited? It's a meaningless announcement to make to non fans and only serves to piss off existing ones.

I doubt Nick/Viacom quite puts the same stock or care in what IDW does with the comic book they licensed as they do with what's going on in their movie and cartoon -- those, and toys, were always the two focal points for Nick/Viacom. More comics were just something they said "OK" to.

Hm. I think it'd be best to just wait to hear what others involved in the film say about it. Previews, trailers, interviews. Until then, I'm just gonna wait.

No use in pulling out hair before you know the big picture.

But aren't they reincarnated humans in the IDW series?

Michael Bay is great at spectacle... if there was some way to marry his eye for action and "big" with some pretty brutal (and not campy) ninja fighting, that'd be great.

I'd feel a lot better about this if there were interviews from the writer(s) talking about their general vision for the Turtles.

Indeed. I guess I should reserve judgement until someone more intimately involved says something that makes me want to firebomb Paramount*.

*Figure of speech. Jester does not condone arson.

I have never lost this much interest in a movie before.

Even if it turns out decent, if the Turtles are aliens I cannot enjoy the movie.

That's great. Don't pay money to see it then.

Scrap the turtle van and give each turtle a camaro thats the same color as their bandanas. Think of the toy possibilities people!

[I will never forgive Michael Bay for his film atrocities]
