If I could request for any third-party character not already being represented, it would be Pac-Man. Especially since he's on a roll lately.

So if you could choose one totally off-the-wall Nintendo character that has literally no chance to be in, but you WANT to be in, who would it be?

For me, it would be Stanley the Bugman, Donkey Kong's first non-Mario nemesis.

Dog from Dunk Hunt. He would be holding two dead ducks by the neck and fight with them by swinging them at you. He'd also have the NES Zapper as a special attack.

I don't suppose they're too crazy but I'd love to see Wart or Mouser.

Captain Rainbow. I was going to say Wanda, but she'd make a much better assist trophy.

My most wanted new characters were Little Mac and K. Rool. I'd be fine just getting Mac though.

Waluigi's an Assist Trophy again

We all knew it was going to happen, but it's still disappointing.

I agree. I don't care what anyone says, I think he's an awesome character. He could have been like a collage of all the Mario spin offs. He would have been glorious.

Waluigi is the best worst character ever created. Just another example of how Nintendo doesn't take advantage of potentially awesome things. Can you imagine a Superstar Saga style RPG featuring Wario and Waluigi? There's so much they can do with that weird creep of a character. I would die of happiness.

Oh, I know! This is why I wish the Mario cast were treated as characters, rather than tools to make a video game with. Here’s hoping Yoshiaki Koizumi is given more creative freedom in the future.

Has anyone seen the intro movies for Mario Power Tennis and Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour? Waluigi and Wario were awesome in those.

It's hard to believe Waluigi has been around for 14 years now. His first game was Mario Tennis on N64 back in 2000.

14 years later and he's only ever appeared in Mario Kart, sports, and party games.

So a recent article at Legends of Localization was posted, the topic?

What does Japan think of Little Mac in Smash Bros?

Although some of the responses were positive, the reception is mostly negative, due to the fact Punch Out! has never been popular in Japan. Some of the comments include:

Quote:
I’m not as mad as I am dumbfounded. These character choices are such a joke

Are they even taking these character rosters seriously?

Sorry, but who is this?

I’m sorry, who is this again?

Who is this?

Looks fun to play as! ….But who is this?

I was hoping they’d announce Diddy and Dixie!
I was surprised at this, I’ve always assumed that all of Nintendo’s franchises were loved in its homeland. I guess I shouldn’t be all that surprised since Sonic the Hedgehog is another game series created by the Japanese that has never been popular in its own country.

This got me wondering; what other Nintendo franchises aren’t popular in Japan? Well, according to TV Tropes, among the list includes The Legend of Zelda, Metroid, and Castlevania. Not Nintendo related, but the much critically loved Jak and Daxter series did terribly in Japan, so much so that the third game was never released in Japan. I can definitely get behind Japan on that one; Daxter is the most annoying video game character in existence.

So, what Kind of characters DO the Japanese want in Smash Bros?

Quote:
Paper Mario
Nick / Captain Rainbow
Monster Hunter
Lucina
Dixie
Daisy
Waluigi
Shulk
Dixie, Daisy and Waluigi? Yes please! I’d probably want Captain Rainbow too if Nintendo would have released the game outside Japan.

Unrelated, but apparently the Angry Video Game Nerd and the Nostalgia Critic are popular in Japan, too. Huh.

Wow, are Japanese fans really as whiny as western fans? I didn't know the Japanese complain about characters and games like western fans. I always assumed the Japanese accepted things more easily, but I guess this is a myth.

Those translated posts (especially more when you check the link) feel like whiny lines you'd find on IGN or Neogaf.

Eh, well, look at those comments again, the most negative comment is "I’m not as mad as I am dumbfounded. These character choices are such a joke." Notice that there is no name calling or hateful remarks to Nintendo themselves. They aren't being "whiny", just confused by this strange character they've never seen before. Who is he? Why is he in Smash Bros?

For example, imagine if Katsini was announced as a playable character:

What kind of comments would you see around IGN or NeoGAF if this happened? A large group of people would at the very least be confused as to who this character is and baffled as to why Nintendo would include him into Smash Bros. A bit of an extreme example, but it's the only really obscure Nintendo character I could think of.

So, back on topic, what does everyone think about Japan's character wishlist? I'd love to see Princess Daisy, Waluigi and especially Dixie Kong in Smash Bros. I've never played Xenoblade, Fire Emblem, Monster Hunter and Captain Rainbow so I don't know anything about them.

I wasn't sure about Paper Mario, but it would be cool if they give him a completely different move set from normal Mario. If they gave him attacks based on his Paper "curses" from The Thousand Year Door it might be cool. Like his UP B move could turn him into a paper airplane to glide back on to the stage.

I always love when the more obscure characters end up showing up in things. Granted, I'd rather them get the basics out of the way first, you know, the ones that everyone expects.

Little Mac, at least on this side of the Pacific, was one of those ones that seemed like a shoo-in years ago. Everyone remembers Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!, if not the sequels. I guess this explains why we never saw him as playable before.

To be fair, though, Japan, a good number of characters in Melee and Brawl were completely unheard of by all but the most hardcore Nintendo nerds over here. Hell, when Smash 1 came out, literally nobody I knew had played Earthbound, so everyone was like "Who the f*** is Ness?" You can stomach Little Mac.

Most people didn't know who Ness, Marth, Roy or the Ice Climbers were when the first two Smash's came out. Fire Emblem hadn't come out in the states yet, Ice Climbers was an obscure NES game few knew about, and Earthbound was also a rather niche game.

Looking back the roster for Melee had some weird choices. I'm surprised more well known characters like Diddy and Wario weren't added back then over say Ice Climbers and Mr. Game and Watch.

Japan, we've endured characters from games that have never even come OUT here! You can deal with a slightly more obscure character that's beloved on the other side of the world.

I see it as the equivalent that you'll find bad posts anywhere, it doesn't speak for the genera consensus. Not saying it isn't but just throwing it out there.

Waluigi was actually the final boss in DDR Mario Mix, sure it's a spin-off game but so is Mario Land 2, anyway yeah Waluigi is definitely underused, having him in a warioware game would be good. hell most of the mario cast is underused, I don't see why they don't bring back Wart or Wario/Waluigi as villains in one game, not even a main mario game but an RPG or something. So many lost opportunities.
