That's another reason they shouldn't try to tie their lives to real world events, because time moves on and we're in a situation where the last decade takes place over a weekend or so and yet humanity is stuck on smartphones and social media like we are today.

They should really retcon it like Magneto (or whoever else) lost his parents during the Great Kree war of some unspecified decade. Something something some humans betrayed humanity with the Kree, blame mutants somehow something something.

At least with something made up like the Kree war you can say it happened in 20xx or just never specify the year, and if you do, it's easier to retcon a fictional event instead of trying to explain why a real world event like WW2 all of sudden didn't take place in 1939 for the sake of the story.

I don't know why it has to be that complex to be honest. What it takes is a good writer who can figure out how to interlace positive super-hero themes within today's framework.

But that is very hard to do given the zeitgeist of the last 16 or so years now, especially when combined with the "Everybody Gets a Trophy" generation of passive-aggressors basically now the target audience for pop-culture.

It's a huge mismatch of generational sensibility to content.

Honestly, this generation of social-puritans is totally inverted from their "message". They are better off with content like "The Running Man" than they are "Captain America".

Didn't they make a joke about this in the Superman movie, "Who still reads newspapers?" It's 2025+, most people aren't picking up newspapers from The Daily Planet.

It's the same way Clark Kent doesn't change in phone booths to his Superman costume anymore. LOL, remember when Clark would rush into a random phone booth on the street to put on his costume in the old comics and cartoons? They had to stop that when phone booths were no longer a thing.

I seem to recall there was a scene in the Reeves Superman movies where Clark ran to a phone booth and it was one of those smaller ones, not the ones that are actual booths, he just stopped and stared at it. I'm surprised even during the Reeves era the phone booth was out of fashion and that joke could be made.

Apparently this is coming to streaming already by the end of July. Good they got this out quick, that way I can watch it for free when the illegal streaming websites get the HD rip.

I feel sorry for the saps who paid money for this in theaters, all you had to do was wait a month and a half and its on streaming already.

Damn, the movie is only at 117 WORLDWIDE. It's not even going to do as good as Ballerina, which was a GOOD movie with half the budget of Supergirl.

God bless the illegal streaming websites. I think they're located in a mix of Indonesia, India, Russia and other third world countries and they always get the HD rip within a day or less when it comes out officially. Then they put it out over 50 different sites so if one gets taken down there's backups everywhere.

I never have to pay to watch a movie or TV show again unless I really want to see something in theaters (which I did for Superman in 2025), I think that was the first time I paid for a movie ticket since covid happened.

I probably will for Supergirl (and hey, I TRIED to get the wife or daughter to see it with me in the theater but it was a hard "NO" from both and no way I'm walking into the theater as a 40-something year old guy by myself), but as time goes on I find I actually pirate really nothing anymore. Nothing in almost a year, really. It's much easier just to "buy" a digital movie in 4K on Amazon in 2 seconds for $5-10 than fighting with torrents that will MAYBE be in 1080p and take an hour.

I think a lot of females not being interested is the problem. If your wife/daughter aren't interested, that proves Supergirl isn't even working with the intended demographic. It's likely why it's failing at the box office because all women don't care about seeing the movie even though it's essentially, "for them."

If the female demographic doesn't care, who is this movie for? The small minority of 50+ year old male comic book Supergirl fans who have been buying issues since the 90's?

Yeah. I noticed a lot women on the interwebs complaining about men not seeing the movie while they make no mention about them seeing it themselves.

Personally I don't care what other people think of me, so depending on what was going on during opening weekend or so, I woulda still gone to see even if I was single.

Not 100% sure if the wife would have gone had we not gotten together. We see several movies these days cause they make for perfect date nights.

And from what I hear, despite women blaming the 'misogyny' or whatever, most of them only went to see Supergirl because their husbands/boyfriends probably dragged them to see it.

Unlike other movies we seen like the FNAF movies and such, there were no groups of 3 or so women all going together to see Supergirl. We only noticed couples, and ironically, small groups of obvious comic book geeks but like a single woman or groups of women? Naw. At least not in our theater.

But what's interesting is my wife, and to a lesser extent my 18 year-old daughter... they both seem to like the IDEA of the Supergirl movie being out there. Like, it's something they "Support." But just not anything they'd actually go out and watch, even if someone buys them a ticket for it, lol.

So it's up on the illegal streaming websites so I watched it. It's about what I expected, what I was surprised about is how many scenes Superman was in. I thought he'd only be on 1 video screen call at the beginning, but he appears in several flashbacks through the film and they show when Kara first lands on Earth and meets him.

They also show Krypton's destruction which surprises me because the Superman movie didn't. We saw more of Superman's backstory in a Supergirl movie than his own movie!

Also Lobo is very underused. He only appears in a few scenes through the film. They made a big deal out of Aquaman playing him but he doesn't even appear all that much. The main villain was boring and terrible and the backstory for the girl sidekick was cliche, but there wasn't much else to it. Her actress made pretty much the same expression throughout the whole movie. Also we don't see Supergirl in her superhero costume till the very last fight of the movie.

Overall it is what it is. It's very run-of-the-mill but not bad. I can't imagine paying for it but watching for free is ideal.

Saw it myself just now. It was OK. It was just... nothing new and nothing to get excited about? And for all those composers they went through the music was nothing and bland.

You can also definitely spot the reshoot additions:

* EVERYTHING with Lobo in the third act had to be a reshoot addition when they decided they needed more Lobo, beginning with him in the jail cell. Which doesn't even make sense. How did he get caught? And then he just flies out of the movie, LOL! All that excitement for Momoa as Lobo and he's just a nothingburger in the movie.

* Krell in the alley killing the father/mother that poisoned Supergirl and then killing their daughter that the father/mother was trying to get back from him. It's never even brought up again. Definitely added to maybe increase the justification of Krell's later death. Probably their test audiences were like, "That was SOOOO mean when Supergirl killed him!"

* I think Superman's messages to Supergirl were in there originally, but the bit where he actually gets a hold of her and they talk "live" seems stitched in. I'm 50/50 if that ending with him and Supergirl is added. It might have been there originally, or a different and smaller version of it was.

It isn't shot very well. And yeah, Supergirl killing Krell was weird. If you're going to show her stabbing him in the neck and gut dead-on screen in a PG-13 movie where you can't show any blood, don't do it. They should have just cut to a side-view with a silhouette and have her behead him or something. That would have been much more effective and not lame.

They also had a great setup to feature Brainiac screwing with Argo there, or something there later on in a mid-credit scene but they give nothing at all. Not even a hint. Now it'll just be "HEEEERE'S BRAINIAC!!!" out of nowhere exactly like Dr. Doom in Avengers: Doomsday with 0 setup.

*edit: I was peeking again back at the fist part of season 1 of House of the Dragon. In that they knew how to light that actress and shoot her to capture her at her best and accentuate her prettiness. She seemed "Very Cute" and even sexy in that. In Supergirl whoever did the cinematography couldn't be bothered with any of that stuff. She's lit horribly and there are like bizarre zoomed in angles on her super jacked up lower front teeth. I didn't even know she HAD jacked up lower teeth until this movie, and I never should've if they were doing their job.

I now understand why people say she looks like the feral kid from Mad Max 2. Their jawline is identical, which is pretty funny given there's a 40 year age gap between actors and he's a male kid from 1981 and we're now in 2026.

I wonder if they both have Neanderthal DNA in their ancestry which explains their looks. Ron Perlman also is a modern Neanderthal which is why they cast him in the 1980's movie "Quest for Fire" where he played an ancient caveman.

But there's also all of these camera angles like looking up at her face from below. Nobody looks good from that angle and they keep doing it with her, often while backlighting her hair and jawline. It's a bizaaaare choice.
