Guys, let's stop trying to defend this game. We're apparently not allowed to like what we want and must conform to reviewer scores and popular opinions instead.

Being an indiviual is overrated after all...

That argument goes both ways you know. I say that I don't like the game and I'm told that my opinion isn't right because I "haven't played truly bad games".

So save the victim act.

I'm not putting on one? You used a blanket statement like every person who liked the game is being held down by people who don't like it.

Right after I came in here and expressed my opinion on the game, I'm told that I only think it's bad because I haven't played other bad games.

I'm sorry but it's just that a lot of your posts give off a "This game is bad and you should all feel bad for liking it" vibe.

It also doesn't help that you feel the need to trash it and dissuade people from trying it themselves EVERY time the opportunity rises.

I'm sorry but I'm not going to say "Yeah! Spend money on this game, Even though it's not good!"

They ask if the people here think it's worth a purchase, I'm one of the people here, I give them an honest answer. Deal.

Just because you didn't like it doesn't mean it's objectively terrible. That's an opinion, not a fact, no matter how strongly you believe it.

If there's a scale between "amazing" and "terrible", the examples I listed would be far on the latter side of the spectrum. And if by today's standards, "Smash-Up" may only be somewhere in the middle of the spectrum, but still that doesn't make it "terrible" by any stretch.

No, that would be renting and playing it back in 1999.

This pointless hostility is becoming a pattern with you. It's just a video game; is it really worth getting this worked up over? I disagree with you, it's not the end of the world.

This thread needs some class!

Quote:
The subtitle of C.S. Lewis’ Abolition of Man is "Reflections on Education with Special Reference to the Teaching of English in the Upper Forms of Schools". Lewis begins with some pointed criticism of an instruction book on the teaching of English. In that instruction book, the authors (Lewis gives them the pseudonyms "Gaius" and "Titius") quote a story about two tourists at a waterfall written by a man named Coleridge. One of the tourists calls the waterfall "sublime", the other calls it "pretty". Coleridge disagrees with the "pretty" description. Gaius and Titius state, in their effort to demonstrate certain uses of language, that when the one tourist stated that the "waterfall is sublime" he was not really making a statement about the waterfall, but, rather, about his own feelings, e.g. "I have sublime feelings". Gaius and Titius go on to state that such confusion is common in language, that "We appear to be saying something very important about something; and actually we are only saying something about our own feelings". Lewis says that instead of teaching English, Gaius and Titius are teaching (perhaps unknowingly) ethics and philosophy; namely, that a statement of value ("the waterfall is sublime") only reflects the speakers emotional state, and that such a statement is unimportant.

Ha, fair enough.

I don't think I'll bother with this little "debate" any more. I've got more important things to concentrate on.

I just grabbed the game today and I have to say I like it. To me it feels like a decent Smash Bros. clone with enough Turtle nostalgia to keep me interested. I love the fact that instead of cutscenes they used actual comic book panels complete with ink splotches. Very nice touch in my opinion. I am also really digging the level designs and creativity that went into the various levels. I love the level of destruction in this game, Smash Up is definitely the right name for it.

Of course the game isn't amazing by any means, but it is fun, and to me, that is the most important thing. I can definitely see my wife and I playing through the campaign for sure.

The only thing I don't like so far is the "auras" around the characters as you fight, it gets really distracting. I also don't care much for the announcer at all, I think that the game would have been better without his cheesy introductions.

All in all though I think it is a pretty good game, especially since I came into it thinking it might be a complete dud.

That's optional, you can turn them off.

this game is good, even though the arcade mode is very short and you could probably beat it in less than 20 minutes. but overall, its a good fighting game for those who like Smash Bros

Yeah, I'll probably be playing co-op with my wife for the most part, I didn't expect the Arcade mode to keep me busy longer than thirty minutes or so.

I just looked up the Wikipedia page for this and found out that this (which I am sure you guys probably already know):

Quote:
The game was developed by Game Arts, who had previously worked on Super Smash Bros. Brawl, and several former members of Team Ninja[4], who previously worked on Ninja Gaiden II.
That is pretty damn impressive, I thought that they were just completely aping Smash Bros. (and doing an admirable job) but it makes sense to know that Game Arts was behind this. Also, Team Ninja rocks, I love the Ninja Gaiden series and am super stoked they are doing Metroid: Other M now.

One quick question: Who were the Mirage artists that did the art for this? I got kind of a Lawson vibe from the scenes I saw but wasn't sure if it was him.

It just looked a bit different from the stuff that I saw by him in issue #30. I suppose maybe he was going for a slightly different look for the game? It just threw me off somewhat.

So I picked this up finally, played it for around forty minutes and gave up. Its just horrible. The cut scenes are around the only redeeming feature for me. In fact, I quite dug the environments - that one on the ship was pretty great - when you need to jump on the whale. Other than that - meh. Don't like the controls (all I seemed to be doing was tapping the same two buttons over and over again and jumping back and fore). I hate the way the camera zooms way out so you can't see what's going on. Gimme Tournament Fighters over this any day. However, saying all this, i'm gonna give it another go, this time using the classic control, see if its any better for me. Gotta at least complete the thing in arcade mode, huh?
