Yes, this. Also, while I don't want her playing ninja she does not need to be bait to drive the plot.

I also liked Paige Turco in the role.

I hope the trend of "kid April" dies out. Just makes Splinter look like a jerk for putting someone else's child in the line of fire.

At least with 2012 April since she was half Kraang, they were never going to stop coming after her and her father, so she needed to learn how to defend herself.

Did they ever show Rise April's parents or family?

About Rise April: I don't think they showed her parents, tho to be honest I was bored looking at my phone a lot in her focus episodes.
