Tales of the TMNT 12

The official site has a preview of Tales 12...which means it'll probably be out Wednesday.

Shadow's honor class wins a school field trip to Paris and Raphael comes along to protect her. Apperantly at one point he gets shot by a cop. ugh.

Just noticed on the website's synopsis page, they list that the plot for this one is done by Churchy Le Femme & Pepe Le Pew. Those silly pranksters at Mirage - playing along with how the story takes place in Paris! Wonder who really wrote it?

Came out today. Read it.

Well, let me get this out of the way. I don't like Shadow. I just don't. I don't like goths and I don't like bad attitudes. So a story focusing on Shadow really wasn't my cup of tea.

The story opens with her whining, some more, about how all her classmates are backwater hicks becasue they don't live in New York, and how they're all conformists for shopping at the Gap. Ugh.

The story-itself was only alright; pretty predictable. They keep pairing Raph with Shadow, obviously because their peronalities match the best (though Raph isn't some stuck-up tool like Shadow). "The Beast" was a uniqe character-design. Really off the wall but in a kind've creepy way. The art had an anime-thing going, which was alright. Normally I hate anime-style, but the artist didn't go over the top with it.

The Letters Page had a few nuggets of wisdom. Issues 2 and 11 were the first installments of a "trilogy". The third part is scheduled for issue 26, so we won't see closure on that for a while.

All in all, I'm not a fan of Shadow so this issue just didn't do anything for me.

Boring.

Shadows' last two apperances have been stale, generic, and cliched, Absolutley cliched, ghosts of dead Frenchman? Barly any concern, in art nor writing, for the SHOT Raphael? A villain that might as very well be those german tumblers from Family Guy?

I have a funny feeling he survives though.

Man, Darkstalkers came out weeks ago. Might want to hurry before the issues all sold out.

Yeah, #6 was the last issue in the first story arc, though it wasn't much of a story arc. There are still copies at the shops near me, so you might still be able to get lucky.

It says it takes place in 2002 so I guess they'd either be the same age as now (since the current story arch began in 2002 and has not progressed in real time) or 2 years younger.

Well the story was different, and very well though out. Murphy seems to be a history major. This issue was completely different from any superhero/mainstream comic out there, but that doesn't mean it was any better. I think the story was fresh, but towards the end it became a total cliche and waste of time. Spoilers ............. the french dude being a dead ghost whose ghost still roams was just a terrible way to end it. Murphy shouldn't have said anything about the guy, it should have stayed a mystery, and the villian in this issue was just disgusting. ........End Spoilers
Story Grade C+

The artwork in this issue was off. I accept this style that the Turtles are in, it's different but it works, but I absolutely HATE the humans. It's like a half anime thing going on that just looks horrendous, especially when you compare it to the amazing visual backgrounds. The backgrounds made me feel like I was there, each so detailed and vibrant. Almost makes it seem like a waste when you put in a pokemon human in there. Dario Brizuela did a much better job on issue #1 than this issue (maybe because there were no humans).
Artwork Grade B

Overall this issue of Tales is nothing to write home about. Sounds like future issues will be better. A tales issue written by Mikey (stated in the letter column, issue tweny-something will feature Mikey) sounds good if it's just a narrated issue, otherwise I'm unsure. Sometime in August there should be an issue featuring 4 Leonardos, is it just me or does the artwork for that issue look atrocious?
Overall Grade B-

The art doesn't look atrocious, to me. The guy draws the turtles a little different, but man, remember how many different ways people drew the turtles in the 80s? I'm excited to see how it will look, and how he handles Leonardos of four different stages of life. Plus, if you don't like his turtles, wait til you see how he draws everything else... I mean, it's a package deal, and maybe the rest will make up for it.

Speaking of which, I liked this issue. Sometimes Shadow got on my nerves (she was so sweet growing up! What the hell happened to her?) but the artwork was nice, and I didn't mind the humans. I mean, everyone's going to approach things differently. I like the TMNT series' artwork for not trying to be a realism contest, like everything else. Don't get me wrong-- I'm loving a lot of the realistic mainstream stuff, too. But something about the artists doing what they want instead of conforming to a certain standard is respectable. It's nice and underground, know what I mean?

The story was fun, but yeah, there is that macabre trend going on in this series, like the guy said in the letters page. I'm looking forward to the one written by Mikey.

The drawings were better than #11 but the It was just another weird story which actually ended way too fast in my opinion Im really looking forward to Mike's story but I guess that will take awhile to come out

This issue was okay, but not the greatest. I really thought it was unreal how Shadow had no concern for Raph at all when he was shot, since she was pissed off at him for following her. I wonder how old she is in this? I agree with Ectocooler on the art.. the architecture was great, I loved the detail, but the humans just looked too anime. The ending seemed more than a bit cliche to me, him being a ghost just seemed like a cliche that i've seen one too many times.

As for Shadow's age... It was clearly stated in Tales vol.2 n°7 that she was 13 when the «warewolf incident» happenned, and that nearly five years passed since that moment and the current TMNT vol.4 continuity (which makes her 17-18 in those books). Judging by the character's evolution, I'd say that she's about 15-16 in issue 12; the way she acts and speaks in this story fits with her own comments in the last page of issue 7 : «By the second year I started to loosen up, appreciate my weird mutant family, become less fearful of the night. I even began to dress just as badly as everybody else». (Note : being at least 15 in 2002 means that Shadow is born around 1987, which is plain impossible, City at War happening in the middle of the Yugoslavian war of the early '90s. Well, those continuity problems aren't that important, since at least the guys at Mirage build their stories with time passing and characters aging, things which most comic book writers simply don't care about)

As for Shadow not showing enough concern for Raph, what did you expect? She would panic at the sight of blood and go «poor little uncle Raphy»? She's been raised by ninjas; she's the daughter of kill'em-all-take-no-prisoner-Casey-Jones! Does someone really thinks it was the first time she saw a member of the family in a bad shape? She reacted true to her character, and acted like she was thaught to «in her training». This is one of the reason I like this character so much : being a strong, kinda stubborn and down-to-earth girl. Very different from big sister April. She fills the shoes of Oyuki in the Archie series, and I think her presence adds much to the TMNT universe. Oh, and don't worry about the «goth look»; we all know that by now Shad has ditched the purple shampoo and come back to her natural blond hair (still short; gotta keep the tomboy attitude!)

Oh, and yeah, the end was kinda cliché. And Murphy would'nt be a honors french student : NO french cop would go shouting «ARRÊT»; just because you saw it on Québec's «Stop» road signs doesn't mean it's a litteral translation. But all in all, I'd say : Shadow rules! Give us more!
