Sonic Comic Disscussion

Anyone catch the last few issues?

I really like the way the whole Mina and Ash pairing was used in "Songoose". Though, I would have preferred it if the problems in their relationship could have continued a few more issues, instead of everything being suddenly resolved at the end (Even though the way they did it was very well written, if a little clichéd.)

It's romantic plots like this that have me saying the Sonic comic is better than ever.

I'm a Sonic fan, and I used to subscribe to the comic, but in my opinion the comic has really gone down the crapper. The comic strives too hard to incooperate a little bit of every piece of Sonic's past into one jumbled mess and it just annoyes me.

Oh, and outside of Stephen Butler's artwork (which seems to have disappeared), the artwork just makes my stomach turn. I actually own some Steven Butler pencil art. I only subscribed form 1994-2003 because the pictures were pretty. When they stopped being pretty, I picked up the Street Fighter comic, which never ceases to amaze me. That's how you do a gaming comic.

No offense intended though. if you love it, then I'm glad it still makes someone happy. I still feel like Archie needs a restraining order against Sonic though.

Well, you're entitled to that opinion (and I agree about the artwork), but frankly I LIKE all the constant blasts from the past. That's kinda the fun of reading a series for a very long time. And, seeing the increased emphasis on relationships is exactly what I've wanted from the series since I started reading it from issue #0

It's weird how anytime a TV show or comic lasts more than ten years everyone turns on it and starts talking about how "it's not good, anymore" and comparing it to more recent efforts in the same genre (not that I don't like Family Guy and want to check out the new Street Fighter comic), but I think shows and comics get better with age, there's more development to work off from and it means more when a long-standing formula get's shaken up with a wild plot-twist than a newer one. Not to put- down your opinion, just expressing mine.

It's something that bothers me anytime someone wants to talk about Sonic-comics or the Simpsons or anything else that's been around awhile.

Sonic and Sally are scheduled to reunite any time now, theres' a REAL tearjerker with Sally and Nicholes' exchange in the current issue.

...Oh, and the Simpsons still suck.

Yeah, I can't wait for some reconciliation to happen between them, not that the break-up wasn't an interesting era.

And, I LOVED that "stargazing" story from issue #151 that I believe you're referring to! You may notice I use a quote from it as part of my sig.

Sally addressed the real reason she has'nt gotten back with him to herself a few issues back, she can't pursue a reconcliation due to her duties, shes' on the way to regretting that now through stories such as "Stargazing", her only other companion breifly amongst the living and then fading. Sonic himself getting a taste of lonliness in the previous story.

The couple will get back together, but after that lets' try and have a really big shake up, I'd kill to have Eggman/Robotnik back in charge, we've done all we can with a free Mobius, maybe when SATAMs' twentieth anniversary arrives, we'll see a return to the roots.

I felt the "Mobius Twenty Five Years Later" arc blended quite well in contrast with what was happening during the break up, though we've had more comedy than anything substanially seriosus though, the closest being an issue with Sonics' father and maybe the Nichole story

Too many break ups spoil the combiniation. Antonie and Bunny seperated currently kind of represented the only one I wanted at the time

Well, it has more to do with her being worried about Sonic getting killed again (this time for real), and not wanting to deal with that worry. Kind of the same problems the loved ones of cops have (and the reason they're not good at keeping relationships going).

But, I kinda wonder if she might be wondering if having Sonic and worrying about him getting killed all the time might be better than no Sonic at all.

And, I'm kinda hoping they do more with Niccole's wish to be an organic being.

I've been reading it since the beginning and have every issue of everything (including the Minis, Specials and the Knuckles comic), so obviously I'm a big fan... but being a huge comic fan in general (I have something like 3500 comics), I can safely say that this book is the most inconsistent of all the ones I regularly read. Sometimes the art is great, sometimes it's god-awful; sometimes the stories work great, other times it literally reads like it was thrown together during the writer's lunch hour. Therefore, much as I enjoy the book, sometimes it infuriates me as well.

I think the lack of any solid creative team hurts a lot. Even books like the Superman and Batman books have suffered without a consistent artist and writer. It always seems like there's no long-range plan for the book, and the direction changes every few months. I'm glad to hear there's a plan for Sonic and Sally getting back together, since one of the things that's always bothered me the most is how the writers would use some completely contrived plot device to cause tension between them just to placate the teenybopper fangirls on Ken Penders message board who liked Mina better.

Oh, and last year I did a move job for Barry Grossman's daughter (he was one of the original Sonic inkers), and I discussed some artwork he has for sale through email, how neat is that?

Yeah, I really miss Barry Grossman's work! What's his daughter like? Did, she drop any hints at what he may be working on now?

And yeah, I noticed that the fans who root for Mina tend to fall into a certain category. I really like the character of Mina, as well as Ash.

But, as someone who grew up with Sonic+Sally, I really gotta say I prefer Sonic+Sally and can't wait for a reconcilliation story.

She's not into comics really, so we didn't talk much about it beyond her naming some of the stuff her dad used to do under various pen names that I don't remember (I think Barry Grossman is just a pen name as well, but I could be wrong).

However, she is very hot, for what it's worth. She's married, has a kid, was a gymnast in (I think) college and has very nice legs, and was a very good tipper. Oh, and she bought me and my boss pizza. So she's alright by me.

Sounds cool. Makes me wonder what other pen-names Barry Grossman has.

Are there graphic novels (collected issues) of these comics? I've been wanting to read them for a long time, but because I don't live anywhere near a comic book store...well, you get the idea.

There's two of them, but they don't really collect them in order. There's "Sonic Firsts" which contains important "firsts" in the Sonic storyline.
And, "Sonic: the Beginning" which contains, if I'm not mistaken, the four issue mini-series that started the comic.

I do wish they'd do more, with all the storys in order. They have been considering that, so it may come to pass.

I stopped reading the comics shortly after the End Game series, so around issue #50 when Dr. Robotnik was supposedly defeated.

I've heard mixed reviews about the direction Archie is taking Sonic the Hedgehog, but living in a small town the only store that carried the comics has stopped with comics, so I'm out of luck.

SatAM was probably the best Sonic out there, so I was pleased when the comics would reference to that, and it being my favorite explains why Bunnie Rabbot is my favorite character.

The last issue of sonic i have is when sonic gets turned into a robot. and battles a knuckels that turns into a robot, but uses the older robotizer (sp?)
I still read that issue from time to time. its a good read. I have always liked sonic..

i do have a few questions though. does sonic have the long hair like in the adventure games? are sally and the crew still around? has shadow been introduced in the comic?

I'm pretty new to the Sonic comics, but I think I can answer those.

Sonic has the long hair and all the characters resemble their Adventure designs now. However, whenever the comic does a flashback to the days before the Adventure titles revamped all the characters' appearances, they all appear as they did in the "classic days". Nice little nod to continuity.

All the Freedom Fighters are still around, at least they were in the last 15 issues (which is what I've read). Antoine was briefly replace by an evil twin who killed King Acorn and tried to take the throne of Knothole. Sonic figured him out and rescued the real Antoine from the alternate dimension he'd been trapped in. Rotor, Bunnie, Sally, Dulcie and all the rest of the "original" characters are still kicking.

Shadow was introduced not too long ago, and just recently made his come-back in Sonic #145. I think he's going to come back again soon, too.

He reappeared because the upcoming arc will be adapting a video game storyline, this time "Shadow The Hedgehog", I tend to avoid these, because they only exist as product placement for the inferior games. That being said, I'd take the Archie Sonic Adventure storyline over Sonic X anyday, no Chris to be found at all.

The comic began as a tie in with that cartoon in the first place, so its' not suprising.

Recently, the UK Fleetway "Sonic The Comic" comic has found a new audience through the uploading of variosu back issues and virtual fancomics, the series began as a little cartoonish affair, but soon developed a darker tone, using such classic SATAM inspired mainstays as Robotnik being in control of Mobius. In a professional little manuvere, Amy Rose became indenpendent in this comic long before the games made her more than a damsel in distress, there were never many romantic moments with her in this comic though, though they did share a "moment" in the final story arc so to speak.

Some of the greatest story arcs saw Sonic battle with the Brotherhood of Metallix, an empire of metal Sonics who attempt to overthrow Robotnik, and Super Sonic, Sonics' chaos emerald powered form, seperated from him, and, in an Incredible Hulk fashion, is the manefestation of Sonics' darker nature, and is throughly evil.

Tailss' "alternate universe" dillema in the Archie comics was predecessed by Fleetway also, with Tails becoming the reluctant champion of an alternate reality called the Forbidden Zone.

I picked up a half-dozen recent back issues of the Archie Sonic comic, and issue #146 has an order form for back issues going all the way to Sonic #30, and all the annuals and spin-off titles, too.

So...what's a good place to start? Recommendations?

I've looked at some of the really early issues were the book was more like the Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog cartoon (lame); about when did the book start getting dark and "serious"?

The price is right, 10 issues for $20 bucks or less.
