They removed them. End of story.

Wiki has the following to say: Michelangelo from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series uses two kobu nunchaku, although due to early censorship, there was a period in which he used a grappling hook, dubbed the turtle line. And in the UK he was armed with twin tonfa.

Here in germany you can make yourself delinquent in buying nunchucks.
All I know is that they are very dangerous and it's very easy to kill someone with it....to choke people.

For me it's an idiocy, because you could also use a belt or a shoelace to choke someone....and these of course are not illegal.

Well i'm from the UK and can honestly say that Mikey was my favourite character growing up and whatnot and i can NEVER remember him NOT having the 'chuks. I had a buncha games, videos and toys (still do) and in not one instance is there no nunchucks. Was i born in a weird place in the UK with no censorship? nope. There was the whole 'Hero' instead of 'Ninja' thing going on, as my old videos prove, (and memory - i didnt know it was really 'ninja' til the movie came out!) but still, Mikeys got his 'chucks! Wasnt the grappling hook, etc, in later episodes of the toon all over the world?

I really don't get how the nunchuks are so much worse than the other weapons. I mean, you could kill someone by stabbing them with a sai or hitting them with a Bo staff in just the right spot, and then there's the katana...

Scenes where Michealangelo used his nunchucks in the first few series were just chopped out completely, and you could tell, due to how abrupt the scene changed, and the jump in the music. Same with the word ninja. Just cut it out... although, they missed it once in Shredderville, where Raphael is able to say:

"We're the Teenage mutant Ninja.... oh, never mind....."

As for games and toys, he always had them, unless the manufacturers felt like mixing up the weapons, and giving him a bo or something.

I still think it is moronic to ban the whole "ninja" word, and the sightings of certain ninja weapons on tv. I mean, you have way more chance to being killed by a gun than by a nunchuck for crying out loud.

Here in the UK it used to be that Mikey could be seen with his Nunchuks but never be seen using them offensively or threateningly.

There's tons of examples of this but right off the top of my head in "The Old Switcheroo" Mikey is seen with his Nunchuks throughout but the part were he throws them both to disarm Bebop and Rocksteady is edited out.

Some of the edits were seamless but others were less so. Even as a kid I could tell that I'd just missed something. After a while it seemed that they just edited the chuks out wherever they could get away with it.

The video games obviously had their own rating systems and Mike used his Nunchuks in all the TMHT Games.

It seemed that eventualy they had a problem in the US with this too as they were gradualy phased out in the fourth season and replaced with the Grappling Hook.

Interestingly, in the Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles Adventures comics that reprinted the Archie stories aswell as original stories written and drawn by UK people, in the UK stories Mikey went completely unarmed and on odd occasion used a Bo Staff along with Donatello.

Interesting. So Archie's TMNT Adventures had a UK counterpart in the same way as Marvel's Transformers, huh? Using the US stories, but also adding some of their own.
Though have read of the '80s TMNT Series and Movie changes before, this is the first I've heard of these comic 'additions'.

^It's still retarted.

My mom was saying that there was even a time when you couldn't show pregnant women on tv. It's ridiculous. I just think the governments needs to butt out of tv and movies and the way they are made.

Granted, that was back in the 50's. You couldn't even say pregnant back then, either. Additionally, husbands and wives all had to sleep in seperate beds.

The times they are a-changin'.

My biggest gripe with the whole "no nunchucks for Michaelangelo" thing isn't so much that they took it away from him, but that they gave him such crapy replacement for the nunchucks--a grapling hook! WTF

Couldn't the writters have given him an actual weapon for a replacement instead of a lousy grappeling hook? I mean a grappling hook isn't even a ninja weapon as far as I know. Heck, rip off one of the Punk Frog weapons and give it to Mike, its not like they showed the frogs often enough for us to care that Michaelangelo had the same type as weapon as one of them.

when did Michaelangelo ever use his nunchucks in an overly threatening or aggressive manner? As far as I can rember Michaelangelo only used his nunchucks to bash some ones head in in season one.

But Zach

But Zach ran around the town in the night with an ice hockey stick, which also can be a dangerous weapon if you hit someone in the head with it. How easy wasn't it for a 1980s western world child to get an ice hockey stick?

Yeah, the grappling hook was retarded(I'm not from the UK,I own some of the Eps from the mid-90's),which reminds me you ever notice that in alot of the earlier eps they just weren't using their weapons right? I mean of course Leo used the sword right, but Don would sometimes just use the Bo like it was a garden variety stick, running around and just bopping people over the head.

Well, following the 1st season, they hardly ever used any actual martial arts when they fought. Most of the time they defeated the enemy in a "funny" manner, suing their environments and what-not.

I mostly blame the stiff Korean animation of the later seasons for the lack of convincing martial arts. The first season, animated by Toei in Japan, was pretty good with the action. Even the rare episodes they animated afterwards ultimately looked better than the Korean ones.
