The first issue of Eastman and Laird's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles premiered in May, 1984, at a comic book convention held at a local Sheraton Hotel in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. It was published by Mirage Studios in an oversized magazine-style format using black & white artwork on cheap newsprint, limited to a print run of only 3,000 copies. The small print runs made these early comics instant collector items, and within months they were trading for over fifty times their cover price. The name "Mirage Studios" was chosen because of Eastman and Laird's lack of a professional art studio at the start of their career, before their creation made them both multi-millionaires.
The first issue is available online on the official site.

I think to_count wanted to know in which issues the exact non-turtle characters first appeared, not when Mirage #1 was released.

http://www.ninjaturtles.com/html/comic.htm - this site might be helpful. Lots of synopses avalaible.

Fugitoid number one is where the turtles make their first appearance. However, if you want to get technical, they appeared in the back of Gobbledygook #1 (first printing) as an add for TMNT issue #1

Oops, you were talking about other characters. I need to read posts more carefully. Sorry, don't know off the top of my head.

Wha-? Uhm, wasn't Fugitoid #1 written after TMNT #4 hit shelves? I mean, it even advertises TMNT #5 at the very end of it.

So I made a mistake. The TMNTs first appearance was in Gobbledygook #1 (first prinitng) as an add. Mistake corrected.

Offhand I'd say, the TMNT, Splinter, Shredder and the Foot made their first appearance in the first issue. April and Baxter made their appearance in the second issue. Like issue 4-6 or something deals with Fugitoid, the Triceratons and the Ultroms. Raphael # 1 marked the first appearance of Casey Jones. Michealangelo # 1 marked the first appearance of Klunk.

I don't understand why Gobbledygook #1 would be considered their first appearance if it was only an ad. I've never heard of an advertisement being considered a first appearance. That being said, isn't that one of the hardest damn books to find?

You're confusing the books MrPliggins is referring to with the 1986 book. There are two issues of the original Gobbledygook, which were published before the first TMNT and are harder to find than the first TMNT.

Although the price guides often state Gobbledygook #1 was the first appearance of the TMNT, that "appearance" was nothing more than an ad on the back cover. I, personally, don't consider an ad an appearance.

NP. The pics are from not too long ago on eBay. I tried to force myself to bid and win no matter the cost, but it just got way too high for me. *sigh*
