Raph and the Shredder

Y'know, I noticed that in the old toon, Raph never directly faced the Shredder alone. I mean, Leo had several swordfights with him, and well, Don did have an ep where he temporarily had to side with Rocksteady and that Dark Turtle thing had him follow Shredder. Even Mike had several run-ins with the Shredder in stuff like 'Pizza by the Shred' and 'Michealangelo's Birthday'. But Raph himself never ever had any solo-time with Shredder or any of the villians. It kinda makes him look like he's just along for the ride basically making jokes and witty remarks on everything that's going on around him, even poking fun at the show itself.

now that I think about it you are right. I don't think there was really a one-on-one confrontation between old toon Raphael and Shredder. Raphael in the new toon didn't even get a character centric one shot episode in season three like the other turtles did. Its not till sseasons four and five that Raphael gets any character centric episodes.

However he does have some interaction with other villans in later seasons, and even in season three Raphael was the one that came up with the plan to defeat Rat King and Leatherhead by gettting them to blow-up the truck load of poisen that Rat King had stolen, in the episode Leatherhead Meets the Rat king. So that sort of makes him the hero in that episode since he came up with the plan that defeated them.

but you are right, Raphael didn't have any one-on-one battles with Shredder that i can think of in the old toon.

I can't recall a one-on-one battle with Shredder right off hand, but in "Blast from the Past," Raphael stays behind to "hold off" Bebop and Rocksteady (who were being "trained" as ninjas), so he does have a unique encounter with at least some of the bad guys.

Although, when you think of it, it's Raphael who first makes an enemy of Shredder when he says "Does the phrase go suck a lemon hold any meaning for you? Let's cut him [Splinter] down!" to Shredder's offer of joining him. Not like any of the Turtles would have seriously considered joining Shredder, but just for the record...

He did! Each Turtle had their own centric episode during season 3. I cant remember what it was called but it took place after 'Same as it never was'. Raph was sent to a racing realm. I think, but he defo had his own episode.

I think Shredder was ducking Raphael. He knew Raphael would run wild on him.

He just didn't want to be on the receiving end of one of those Chandler style put downs.

ugh, I ment the old cartoon. Raphael didn't get any character centric episodes like the other turtles did. In fact I think out of all of them Donatello got the most character centric episodes of the turtles. I think Leonardo and Michaelangelo are tyed, and Raphael seriously gets not episodes dedicated to him.

hey, very good point! he did insult the Shredder and spoke for all the turtles as one. Geez, the fact that the turtles get attacked once or twice a week by the Shredder is all Raphael's fault. Any one think that maybe Shredder would have left them alone if Raphael had worded their refusal a bit more nicely in stead of out right insulting him?

Naw, Raph had quite a few episodes dedicated to him, like 'Raphael meets his match', 'Raphael knocks em dead' and the one about him being a nice guy. But yeah, now that I think about it.... he really had the least of the centric episodes compared to the other 3.

Raphael may get the least centric-episodes in the toons.
But out of all the turtles, I'd say he has the most varied, wide-ranged personality.

Donatello, Leonardo, and Michaelangelo tend to remain their stereotypical selves pretty often. Raphael, on the other hand, has shown many sides of his personality: his aggressiveness, his street-smarts, his kind heart, his passion for protecting his family and innocent people, his sarcastic sense of humor, his emotional vulnerability, and the fact that while he is hot-headed, he still can think logically when necessary.

Not to say the others don't break away from their sterotypical selves now and then, but Raphael does it a lot more often.

uh... we're still talkin about the old show right..? Old toon Raph had every 3rd line be a joke or a putdown. He rarely ever said anything actually serious without it being a gag, pun or insult.

I know the old show was full of gags where even April and Shredder were busting out one-liners, but Raph really had a normal line like you know.. "we have to save those people' or whatever, without it being a gag or putdown.

But then again.. Mikey rarely had a line that wasn't related to pizza or using words like 'dude', 'awesome' 'gnarly' 'tubular' etc etc etc

On that note, ever notice how much spanish Mikey ever used?

well if u include the red-sky era, they got rid of their stereotypical selves quite a bit, but were still the same characters, atleast i thought so, could be wrong, but i don't think they really needed any raph centric episodes since he was always incharge the sarcasticness, lol, but he really did have a few good raph-centric ones

Raph might not have that many, but the alternative is too many. Similar characters have suffered from over exposure and what episodes Raph has had are good. You could say not having that many makes them more valuable.

Technically, he did go up against him...for about 4 seconds of crappy fight scene that the old show gave us..(and couldn't make intense due to parenting concerns). Leonardo is Missing - Raph fights Shredder with Sai on Gauntlet . Super Irma - Raph fights with Sai and Shredders sword...

I love it when you see characters together who otherwise normally wouldn't have interacted. It would have been great to have a Raph/April, or a Don/Krang centered episode. Think Lost, with Don and Krang stuck on an island, and have to use their tech smarts to get off...or some similair plot line . If only the old show wasn't so formulaic..

I think out of all the turtles old toon Raphael had some of the best dialogue. As much as I love the old toon, every so often the turtles and other characters said some pretty corny things; but rarely Raphael. Seriously its like the writters went out of their way to give Raphael (the shows wise ass) witty and quality dialogue to balance it out, because most of the the things that came out of Raphael's mouth where pretty good and rarely made you roll your eyes.

Holy crap now that you mention it you are right!! What the heck was up with that do you think? There was loads of radom spanish thrown into Michaelangelo's dialect And you notice that when Michaelangelo uses spanish he pronouces it in a very "American" way of with out the proper accent LOL!!

Oh God, remember that episode where Baxter Stockman's twin brother kidnapped Raph, strapped him to a machine, and had him tell constant stand up jokes to make the whole of New York laugh like lunitics while his thugs robbed banks?

Because I do.

It's common in California, many people speak Spanish and "Spanglish" as it is. Probably Mikey was emulating the So. CA surfer lingo.
