The Lair

Hi, I was looking for information on the turtle's lair in the various media, for example was the term "lair" always used or is this a recent addition?
I haven't read any of the original comics (yet) except for the first issue which is available online, but from what I remember the turtles were said to live in storm water drainage tunnels rather than sewers, a distinction to my knowledge not made in any other media.
I'd appreciate any help and the results will go towards a Wikipedia article.

As far as I'm aware the sewer home that the turtles live in has been known as their "lair" in all the various media and from what I can recall it's almost always been the in the sewers.

This contains spoiers for each branch of the franchise so don't read if you don't want to be poiled etc....

Comics

The sewer lair seen in the first issue of the Mirage Comics was referred to as the lair but was trashed by Baxter Stockman's Mousers in the third issue so the turtles abandoned it and lived with April in her apartment.

They returned to the old lair during the "Return to New York" storyline but didn't stay there. The turtle gave the lair to Leatherhead so he could work on his Transmat.

In Volume 2 of the comics Leo found a new Sewer lair that he was going to live in alone. This lair is presemebly the same one that was Leo and Donny lived in during Image's run (even though that's not considered canon) and again is most probably the same lair that all four turtles are shown living in at the start of Volume 4.

'87 'toon

It seems that the turtles lived in the same lair throught the entire run of the old cartoon, despite it's design differences in the first, second and third seasons.

You could argue that they may have moved lairs at some point seeing as in the first season Shredder and co seemed to know it's location but it was clear near the end of the second season that the bad guys have no clue of the location of the lair. It's obviously a continuity error but it's something that could be debated within the fandom.

Movies

In the first live action film the turtles are living in a sewer lair until it's trashed by the Foot Clan and the turtles go live with April in her apartment. They return to the lair near the end of the movie but obviously don't stay there.

In the second live action film the turtles are looking for a new lair and they find an old abandoned Subway Station which the set up their new home in and live in this lair in the third movie.

The lair in the current cgi movie doesn't look like the old subway station suggesting that it's an entirely new lair. (Though it could simply be a design thing)

2k3 'toon

The lair seen at the start of the first episode is trashed by Baxter Stockman's Mousers and the turtles abandon it.

Splinter finds a new lair hidden underneath an old draining junction. The lair turns out to be have been built by an acient race known as the Y’Lyntians.

In the second season they find Leatherhead living in their old lair working on a Transmat but in the episode it's pretty much completely destroyed.

In the fourth season the lair is trashed by Karai and the Foot Clan and abandoned. The next episode they set up a new lair in an old pumping station for the resevoir. This lair is under Central Park and above it we can see what looks like Belvadere Castle.

I;m sure someone else could help you better than I could but that's just a comparison off the top of my head.

I found the reference I was looking for issue one page ten:

The storm drains are our home, we know every inch of these subterranean passages.

This makes a lot more sense to me as the storm drains would be dry most of the time and not as dirty as the sewers, also I understand that in America it is common to refer to both as sewers.

As a civil engineer, at least in Virginia, we have sanitary sewer and storm sewer. The termonology though goes back and forth just depending on where you live.

Then how did he pour the mutagen into Hamato Yoshi's sewer/home?
They obviously moved, but at one point Shredder found their home, and he could have, with all of Krangs technology, and we see S&K looking at a map with little dots on it (representing the turtles) and saying the turtles are going to (enter location here).

1987 TMNT cartoon

It looked like they moved after season 1. And Shredder didn't knew that Hamato Yoshi was still alive until season 1. He could have just poured out the mutagen into the sewers, hoping it should kill Hamato Yoshi. (Maybe Shredder heard that Hamato Yoshi escapted to the USA and lived in the New York City sewer system).

They also used the subway lair/set in the Next Mutation series.
