What if Rhino had gotten the DVD license?

I was just remembering the survey they had circa 2002 where they asked what animated series they should release next. They had Transformers: Headmasters, TMNT and a bunch of others listed.

Anyway, with as fan-oriented as Rhino is, how do you suppose they would have treated the classic Turtles 'toon? Something tells me they wouldn't have skipped episodes or given them covers that don't reflect the content. I just wish there was some chance that Rhino would fix Lionsgate's mistakes after (or if) Lionsgate ever tires of screwing up. They were doing so well with the bonus interviews on the last two sets and the imaginative packaging the Fifth Season had... Season Six is looking like it'll be nothing but a disappointment.

I'd be afraid that they would let the licence to sell them expire and not finnish the series, like they did with the Jem series.

Truth. unmittigated truth.

That's why I keep saying, "could be worse." Shout sold the license to Inspector Gadget to Fox, who between us won't release a dang thing. Sony released only 3 lousy disks of Ghostbusters, and when fans asked for more, Sony replied "It's a kid's show! We don't care, dispite the fact we could stand to make a lot of money off a major cartoon from the 80's based on a major film." All the while preventing any other studio to get the license, which would stand to have them lose money on something they're not willing to try to make a profit on anyway.

If it's one thing that Lion's gate did with TMNT, it's that they saw most of it through. Any other company would have just released either a couple 4-5 episode DVD's, or half the series and abandoned the license. They didn't even release more of ALF or ALFtales. Other than the fact half the episodes have bad source tape artifacts on them, there's nothing I see totally wrong. We're missing at most 3 episodes, and chances are, they'll be put on another Disk set as "Lost episodes" or something.

so there are only three dvds out on the Real Ghostbusters? That would explain why I can't find any more. That sucks that Sony won't release the rest of the Real Ghostbesters on DVD. I loved that show as a kid and it was very popular, I don't knbow why there aren't making more of an effert to put those out. But the ones they do have out are cheap in quality and on;y have the episodes on them and nothing else, which is a shame.

Sony has the rights to Jem right now too, and despite all the begging and appeals Jem fans have made to Sony they have yet to release the second half od Jem, or even start over from the beginning, which sucks Rhino cut off in season three right before the serties was about to get into some back story episodes and the stpry arc where the The Stingers where introduced.

So yeah, I'm not to keen on Rhino getting ahold off the classic ninja turtles, might as well let Lions Gate finish up with the series. By the way when does Lions Gate's licence to sell the ninja turtles expire? It's still good for a while yet right? I would hate to see happen to the ninja turtles what happened to Jem.

According to Gord Lacey from TvShowsOnDvd.com it was something like a 15 year deal.

All I know is that they acquired the rights to everything from F.H.E. through their subsidiary, Artisan.

But, I just thought of this... How long has it even been since Rhino last released anything animated on DVD?? If I'm right, they haven't done anything since that survey. When were all the Beast Wars/Machines sets finished?

The worst part is that Sony also has G.I. Joe and Transformers, and apparently feels the same way about those as well. Though, I don't understand why they don't release them via Shout! as they are a subsidiary of Sony. But then Sony has the businness sense of a brick, a styrofoam one at that. They still want to redefine "Stealing music" as actually buying the CD and listening to it. Yet, they never actually tried to release things themselves, due to the fact they think anyone over 15 wants whatever lousy movies they make in super duper sets. I just want me damn Ghostbusters. It's a shame that the Filmation series (while good on its own) gets the full release, and the more famous version doesn't.

So yeah. Count your belssings with Lion's gate. Considering they almost just released one or two 3 episode disks for 14 bucks each.

I personally like Rhino and Shout Factory as those two really get the memories back, like with Beast Wars, my most favorite of the Transformers series, also Shout who brings back really old loved shows like: Sonic the Hedgehog (SatAM and AoStH), Super Mario Brothers Super Show and some others. If I got to see what they had in mind for our turtles, then I might be supporting them over Lion's gate. But as some people point out, you never know and it all depends.

In regards to Sony, it's a little more complicated than "we're not releasing it so nyah nyah."

Sony purchased Sunbow's catalogue of shows after Rhino's license expired with the intention of releasing them in DVD sets, particularly Transformers, which had the new movie coming out. However, the company started losing money hand over fist after a slew of poor business decisions and had to cut their losses. Their division which handled the DVD release of animated product was seen as a waste of money and promptly dissolved. The only thing from the Sunbow license they managed to get out before then was the 1986 Transformers movie special edition.

So Sony had originally intended to release new sets of all the Sunbow material, but the unforseen circumstances of serious profit lost forced them to put it on the indefinate backburner. The most we can hope for now is for their license to expire and some other company to pick it up, though that can be many many years away. And in regards to Ghostbusters, since they're owned by Sony, we may never see a proper DVD release.

well that sounds like it was their poor judgment that screwed things up. But we are the ones that screwed over in the long run because of their lousy buisness descions.

Sorry, but I'm looking for high quality copies to own. Watching them for free is fun, but I want to see something better than pixilated copy of a taped off TV tape.

Jeez... Sony gets my blood boiling. Bad business decisions? I'd like to see what they were. If they can afford lawyers to redefine "Stealing" so they can get the most out of a medium that's going obsolete, that's now filled with mechanical, prefabricated dance music, they can sure as hell release 80's cartoons at the height of the nostalgia boom. If they don't release these soon, there's no way they'll make a profit.
