What if Bruce Timm made a new animated Turtles ?

Yes. I think it would be great. Timm takes the characters he works with back to their roots, so chances are we'd see an 80s styled TMNT without all of the fluff of the OT (not that I'm bashing the OT, of course.)

He's great at what he does. He can even make the most obscure Superheroes something worth watching. That, and he can definitely make the "team" angle work. While he does keep each character to a basic personality, there's enough depth there that they're not stereotypes. He's also good at subtle and overt humor overlapping each other in lighthearted scenes.

Also, he's great at showcasing a very wide variety of villains and villain team-ups with original plans on how to take down the heroes. When he pulls out a major villain, he really plays them up and makes it a real challenge for them to be defeated. So, while I'd see less "TMNT vs. Foot" stuff, I'd be really happy when I did see it because it would be something epic and original.

The best part is that I think he could do this with just about any version of the TMNT and make it cool. While I'd love to see him just do straight-up Mirage TMNT, I'd rather that be saved for DTV movies. If he were to do a show, I'd want him to pick up on the best of a lot of worlds and draw in tons and tons of fans by doing a series about the Archie TMNT.

Its just nostalgic enough to get the adults who were into the OT. Its just trendy enough to get the teenagers who wear TMNT gear just because its "cool" now. Its just adult enough that most fans who are looking for a kind of serious TMNT show can get what they want. Its just funny enough that those of us looking for the funny things in TMNT can get that. However, its just kid-friendly enough that I can see it being shown later in the evening on Cartoon Network or something but not necessarily so late that its exclusively an Adult Swim thing. It would really bring a lot of fandom together.

The only thing I'd be worried about would be what the theme song would be.

As for it being in the future, though, I wouldn't want it being exclusively set in the future. However, as the bigger storylines in Archie involved the future TMNT, I would love to see some really great two, three, or four-parters that heavily revolve around the future TMNT. I just don't want to see that portion of TMNT get overused. I wasn't a really big Archie fan as a kid (I thought the first movie was the be-all-end-all of TMNT), but something about the future TMNT really sucked me into the story even in a universe I didn't pay too much attention to. So, if I could get that same occasional indulgence in a TMNT series, it would be really awesome from my perspective.

The likelihood of ever getting Bruce Timm to do TMNT is pretty low considering the current license with 4Kids, Bruce Timm seeming to be an exclusive DCAU kind of guy, and how impossible it was for Mirage and Imagi to agree with getting one lousy DTV movie based on the comics out there for us to gobble up. Also, I don't think Peter Laird is currently interested in putting too much spotlight on Archie TMNT, but depending on how well the Forever War TPB and that other Archie TPB (or is it all just one TPB?) sells, TMNT Adventures may go back into publication. So, that might start the wheels turning for 4Kids to re-address the idea of an Ultimate TMNT which was supposed to draw heavily from Mirage and Archie.

Hopefully I didn't just derail the thread into an "Archie is cool" thread.

Knowing Timm, it would be a really cool instrumental theme. Remember Batman TAS?? It didn't even have titles...

True. For people who know more than the OT theme, I think Timm would have someone compose a spectacular theme! However, for getting the crowd who grew up on the OT, I think that said tune should have some sort of nod (at least instrumentally) to the OT theme.

Personally, I wouldn't care if it had no reference to the OT, but I would love for someone as talented as Bruce Timm to have as many resources as possible at his disposal. I think he would be able to make a series that everyone but Andrew likes. It would be good for old fans of nearly every universe, it would bring new people in, it would bring back former fans of the OT, and it would definitely break TMNT out of its mold that is comparable for the reputation Batman had before the 1989 movie with Michael Keaton and Jack Nicholson without necessarily making it a mainstream sellout of the franchise.

(No offense, Andrew. I think you're really cool and you're hardcore about preserving the comic universe and wanting to see it expand into other media faithfully. I'm just not currently speculating on something that accomplishes that goal in this thread.)

It sounds awesome, but I can't even imagine how it would be... I guess the potential is too great for my brain to comprehend.

Plus this would bring the possibility of a Batman/TMNT crossover *woah*

I think it would be pretty cool. Timm has already shown that he can make good cartoon shows. I think it would be cool for a show to be more themed like the 2k3 series (more serious) but it should definately use characters from the OT or Archie comics.

That's why I chose Archie to be a good universe. OT characters but with room to play with a more serious Mirage feel.

EDIT:

I emailed Dan about this yesterday. Here's what he had to say in regards to the possibility of this ever happening:

"We'd be psyched beyond compare to have Bruce work on the TMNT since everyone here is a huge fan of his work, but it's a complex scenario at the moment. While we are in awe of his talent, based on his schedule and Mirage's current partnerships, it looks unlikely that we'll have the honor of working with Bruce on the Turtles in the immediate future. But never say never."

and

"At the moment all of Mirage's resources are going into the 4Kids animation projects, so there are no new TMNT toons in development for Bruce to work on... but anything is possible in the long run."

So, lets hope that once 4Kids is done with TMNT that Mirage can get something working with Bruce Timm.
