Customs and repaints (Man Ray, Joker Turtle, Casey, Zach, Chrome Dome, and more)

Hi everyone, here are some more repaints and customs I did. Thanks for all the comments. Patraw- I've even taken some of your advice to heart and re-did a few figs.

Now, how do you sculpt fur?

Wow, you’re a non-stop customizing machine--BigFoot better watch out! Good-Excellent painting work—your applications do look cleaner/more consistant to me. The sculpted elements you add are still pretty rough looking though—I’d recommend working on getting them smoother. I really like the Ray Fillet paint job--far superior to Playmate's in my opinion. Your take on Chromedome is excellent as well, white isn't a color I'd associate with him, but it looks good. The Stump Wrestling Don is definitely an improvement as well.

The Joker turtle is an interesting concept, but the paint job on the face is too messy, even considering what the Ledger Joker looked like.

What base body did you use for Zach?

There are three approaches to sculpting hair that I can think of: (1) Just “draw” the hair into the clay/modeling compound with a fine sculpting tool; (2) Sculpt the hair as a separate piece and then attach it to the figure (this would be more applicable to hanging stuff like beards and hair, although you could use it to have multiple fur layers); and (3) make a ‘texture stamp” and stamp the fur pattern into the clay (you’d sculpt the fur pattern you want as a separate piece, make a negative mold of that, which would be your stamp, and then use the resulting stamp to imprint the fur pattern into the clay).

thanks dude.
i based chrome dome off his old toon appearance. the animators may have been going for something else, but he came out white. it'd be cool to do a tournament fighters-style cd too, one day down the line..

yeah, i just started using apoxie sculpt. it's a definite step-up from sculpey and melting figures, but i need more practice shaping and feathering in edges.
zach was my first shot at it. i used an old ben tenyson figure as the base. i actually got the idea from sombody here on the drome.

i just saw your site- wow, you have made a lot of customs! i really like the megaman and silent hill ones- those were a surprise! flashman, spark man, the gear clown, skeleton joe..so many good ones. do you think you'll ever make bigger figs?

I don't remember the Chromedome episode of the cartoon, if I ever saw it, but white/gray typically are used to represent metal in animation. A TF repaint of Chromedome would probably look boss as well.

Well, keep at the sculpting, that's the only way you get better. As long as you keep practicing and keep trying out new techniques/approaches, you should see improvement over time.

At this time in my life, I'm only interested in making mini figures. They use less materials and take up a lot less room, both of which I find very attractive. I might go back to making larger figures somewhere down the road, but I don't see that happening any time soon.

Chromedome is in 2 episodes:
PLANET OF THE TURTLEOIDS {in 1991} (note the episode was split into 2 parts later)
