Other than the obvious, Heart and Janis Joplin... I'd have to say Juliana Hatfield and Tonya Donelly... A little Kay Hanley too. Kristen Hersh... the Band Bikini Kill... Babes in Toyland...The Guitar Player from The Donna's sounds good. Oh and Mika Bomb is pretty cool

EDIT:
Oh yeah heh, you asked for Recomendations... If you like Punk-ish music check out Babes in Toyland, if you like just straight Rock, I recomend Juliana Hatfield, The Donna's and Veruca Salt.

Don't take this the wrong way, but personally I'm not a fan of female singers.

That's funny, cuase I'm not a big fan of most female pop/rock/RnB singers (with the exception of Technotronic and the other techno/dance ladies).

The ones I do like are more alongs the lines of ecletic. Such as Enya, Lorenna McKennit, and Natalie from Ten Thousand Maniacs. Of course, when I get into that mushy love song mood, I like the Dixie Chicks, Shania Twain, Faith Hill, and Celine Dione. Though, I will admit Nora Jones and Avril Lavigne are growing on me too.

Meh

Music today isn't that great. In fact, i say it downright sucks. I like it better back when music had meaning. When songs were written to express feelings and thoughts and what not, when singers were respectable. The Female singers I like are Aretha Franklin, Melissa Etherige, so on.

My taste of music varies. I may listen to a little Aretha Franklin, some Tori Amos, 10,000 Maniacs, Natalie Merchant, Madonna, Avril Lavigne, yes...I even listen to Michelle Branch, Melissa Etheridge, Sheryl Crow, Vanessa Carlton is good, as well. Alanis Morissette, Shirley Manson from Garbage, and a few others.

i think my moms got a heart cassette laying around somewhere i might go check that out.. i knew julina hatfield sounded familiar..i like her .. i dont know where i got the idea but i while back i decided i needed the josie and the pussycats soundtrack and its alright .. a few choice tracks and a few duds..i dont care much for babes in toyland .. and i like veruca salt more then both babes in toyland and the donnas...
i dont care at all for celine dione or the pop country deal.. if i listen to country i listen to real redneck sutff .. but i dont often so i cant name to many artists..
i've heard peices from almost each artis hear and 95% of them are great and talented but i truley beleive that my scene is 90's girl pop and just girl pop in general when it comes to female artists

I can never get enough of Idina Menzel or Shakira as well as Norah Jones. What I like about them is they write their own music and that is the test of a true artist.

Sure I like other females too. But those three are at the top.
