DVD Picture Quality differences?

I believe someone mentioned in a different thread I was reading that the video quality is BETTER in the 'Season Set' releases. Is this true? If so, I'm a bit bummed because I picked up the individual discs instead of the season sets [mainly to make the 'spine picture' of the boys, plus the box set of 1-4 came with cool little action figures].

This hardly makes sense, since the individual discs are only 3 or 4 episodes per single layer disc [allowing more than 1 GB per episode], whereas the season sets have up to 7 episodes per [presumably] dual-layer disc, which also works out to roughly 1 GB per episode. I assumed they would use the exact same source material for both versions, but you know what they say about assuming. Did they re-encode or re-master the shows for the season sets?

If there is a difference in image quality, is it a big enough difference that I should ditch the individual discs? Are there ANY benefits to owning the individual releases [besides the cool spines], like exclusive 'extras' or other TMNT-centric bonus features?

Thanks in advance for any insight you guys might provide!

I've stated they look better before. I don't know what they did to them but the picture quality is much better, less pixelated. It also has chapters for the intro and no annoying inbetweens for where the commercials would be.

The intro monologues were removed from Part Twos and Threes on the individual volumes. The glitch while Raph stomps a mouser in "Things Change" when the show comes back from its commercial break was fixed. I dunno about the video quality though.

Dang! The skippable Intro and lack of '1! 2! 3! 4! TURTLES!!! every six minutes sounds great, but the improved video quality is what really makes me wish I'd bought the Season Sets. I enjoy the 'recap monologue', so not having them on the Part Twos and Threes is a little sad, but I'd give them up for the above improvements.

Ah well, I'm not going to re-purchase Seasons 1 & 2 in the Season Sets; for one thing, my seasons 3 and [half of] 4 would still be in single disc form, and I imagine there will be a Complete Collection on Blu-Ray one of these days, though I may be waiting for the better part of a decade for it! I'm kinda glad that I got the single disc version of 'Battle Nexus' for the Laird / Sakai interview.

Thanks for the information!

Nickelodeon owns it now, and they don't do Blu-Ray. Unfortunate truth...

Fixed!

All kidding aside, I'm fairly sure that ALL major publishers [including Nick] will make the switch to releasing titles on Blu-Ray at SOME POINT in the future, it's just a question of when; Blu is slowly gaining in popularity and will likely become the 'default' media. Now, whether Turtles 2K3 will ever actually get a Blu-Ray release is another matter entirely, but it sure would be awesome. Heck, even if they don't remaster the episodes, just using the massive storage capacity of BD to fit an entire season on one disc would sure be nice, and save a ton of shelf space!

Cool, thanks for this info guys. I was wondering the same thing the other day.. Well, I think its cool to have ANY episodes on DVD. I hope they make a huge box set like they did with Ghostbusters, IF, they do.

Well, I don't know how much BETTER the picture can possibly look on the SEASON SET discs, but I've been watching some of the Season 1 SINGLE DISCS the last couple of days on my Samsung 32" HDTV via up-scaling DVD player, and they look GREAT!

So, I'm not sad about buying them in the single disc form since the picture looks fine, and there's some pretty cool interviews with Peter Laird on some of the discs, as well as some character profiles and pics of the Playmates toys. Not too bad, I must say. I still wish they had 'skippable' intro credits, and no 'commercial break bumpers', but you can't have it all.

Still wish they'd just release a nice complete series set though...
