Older comics safety?
Hi all. I have a nephew who is just getting into the turtles. He is 11 and wants to get into reading some of the comics. So, in having a 2nd print # 1 and a bunch of others from back in the day I am planning on giving them to him. Now, his mom on the other hand is the problem.
See, he is asthmatic. Therfor his mother is CRAZY when it comes to him getting things if they are not brand spanking new. I know for a fact that Kevin Eastman has been a smoker for a long time. And I also know that back in the day there wasnt a factory sending these issues out to comic shops all over the world. Eastman and Laird just got these printed and brought them back to thier house. So, should I be worried that these books have been around a Ciggarette? I would give him some reprints that were printed later on but all I have are original books. They do smell a little funny but they are old comic books... Opinions? |

Why not give him the colored reprint from last year? It'll be new.
Anyway, to answer your question re: Kevin. you have to remember that the books were shipped in boxes and were only opened long enough to count them and drop them in another box to be sent out to shops, so the likelihood is slim. Also, IIRC Kevin quit smoking a couple of years back. (Steph, clarification?)

Like I said, I dont have any reprints. Besides my first print # 1, all I have is a 2nd print. Then extras of the original run. And even if Kev quit a few years back he still smoked back then.
I dunno, if it comes down to it I could try to buy some TPB for cheap for him. If his mother really wont stop being a freak about this kinda crap. |

Dude, why not order the book for him? It is Christmas. Also, if you search the usual spots online you can get almost the full run of Tales Vol. 2 for a buck or two a book. You'll agree those are the newest, so maybe those are the best ones to start with.
Also, you gotta remember, Kev didn't even live in the same state as Pete when the books were printed. And his participation with Mirage became less and less over time, so again, chances are slim unless others smoked a lot too.

They lived together when they were making the book, but he moved after number 1 was printed IIRC.

Let me know if there is something im not answering And if the kids mom is so strict about trigger elements, why dont you just have her buy him reprints? I mean, it seems like you putting an awful lot of concern over the smoking habits of the first guy that touched them 25 years ago. So if you arent buying new, chances are theyve been touched a ton since then. There isn't much in this world that hasn't been around a ciggarette at one point or another. I wouldnt worry about it... In all honesty what about the mail guys that smoke, pick their nose, scratch their ass and then ship your books. this shouldnt be a concern you need to tell her volume was printed in the late 80's to early 90's so chances are that being new just arent likely. Unless you order from mirage which I believe the first 11 issues arent even on there. Being asthmatic from a guy who possibly touched it with smoked smell hands from 25 years ago shouldnt be a problem, now if you smoke in side your home or while you read comics thats a different story. So unless you want to fork out the cash for "new" I wouldnt worry about it. Explain to her that these are new and then under your breath say "new to him." This is just my two cents tho.

Thanks for the input guys. I guess since I dont think any of this is a big deal I just dont wanna waste money and buy reprints when I have perfectly good doubles right here that I dont even need. Plus, I thinks its cooler to have some ''real'' comic books. But I guess I cant change what it is.
Oh and Archon, glad to hear Kev stopped. I wish my grams would. |

I don't think there would be any chance of smoke getting so absorbed on the pages so much to effect asthma even if you smoked a cigarette while reading it years ago
Didn't they just do that with the first issue or possibly the first couple as they didn't understand how distribution worked? He will be fine, its just older paper imo, even getting back issues that are not pre used often have an odor to them I think its just that they are old possibly because of where they are stored. When I was younger I had a bit of asthma but it was cause in large part due to my mother and other people smoking around me. Dust, pollen and pet fur could also have caused me to have allergy or asthmatic symptoms I don't think some older comics are gonna cause the kid any harm =) |

I've been an asthmatic my entire life. I've never had an attack trigger by a comic book, or any book for that matter. Unless it was dipped in cat hair a piece of print couldn't pose a threat to me.
Smoke smell doesn't trigger and none of the old books smell like that anyways. If the smell hasn't worn off by now then you must have kept the book in an airtight bag for the past 25 years. He should be fine. I hope he digs the books! Cool to see some younger kids getting into turtles. |
