Unpublished IDW TMNT cover

I stumbled upon this professional artist's DevArt account today and he's got a killer piece of TMNT art that he claims was rejected:

Seems like he's done some other stuff for IDW.

It doesn't really capture the look of the IDW series, but neither do most of the variants we've seen so far. I'm curious to know which issue for which this got pitched. It is interesting that the artist claims it was Nick who gave the thumbs down on this.

Looking at it for a second time, that beak nose and human-style lip is pretty weird.

Style aside, there are a lot of problems with this art (although I have to say the humanoid look doesn't work at all, especially the face and the plastron). Parts of it are way too dark. The shell goes up way high behind Leo's head on the left side of him, but then is non-existent on his right side. There's no belt - A small detail, but still, why?

Don't like it.

I wonder if this could have been one of the proposed covers for the "Infestation" specials? The background certainly has an occultish vibe and could be meant to evoke similarities to the tentacles of Chuthulu.

Since it just features Leo, I would guess it was an attempt at a cover for the Leo Micro Series book.

Man, seems like this piece is universally hated by the fandom (I know, first time for everything, right?). It certainly isn't my taste either, but it does sort of have an "elseworlds" appeal for me. I'm glad it won't be appearing on any IDW issues in the future. But considering how much bad "official" TMNT art I've seen over the years, I can't say this piece stands out as an artistic travesty or anything like that.

Judging by the deviation's listing "TMNT Leonardo .01," you are probably correct that this was prepared for the Micro Series issue.

If nothing else, it's an interesting piece. The one thing that surprises me about it, is that I actually appreciate the way he drew the mask. I'm typically not a fan of the "upside down triangle" style of mask, but here I feel like it helps the humanoid face look a little more turtle'esque

Overall, I'm not a fan of the design, but I don't think its a terrible drawing.

Yeah, I don't like that piece in the least. The term "gay bear" comes to mind. Just a really bizarre, unappealing body type for a Ninja Turtle.
