Does Anyone Encounter Wild Turtles?

Years ago I once sighted a turtle on a suburban street near a curb. It was about a foot or two in diameter and had the diamond pattern also seen on box turtles, and its neck was rectangular. I never figured out what kind it was or how it got where it did; the street isn't near any large body of water, and it could not have been any family pet.

Also years ago I met a man who told me about how as a child he lived near a lake with all sorts of turtles in it, such as box turtles and snapper turtles. Anyone here do or did encounter wild turtles also?

That sounds like a diamondback terrapin (in the 2k12 series Donatello thinks that's what they used to be.) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diamondback_terrapin

My first encounter with a wild turtle (dunno what kind it was) occured in kindergarten when my parents rescued one that was in the middle of the road. They took it home and we kept him for a couple days. I took him to show and tell and then released him back in the wild (this was in Texas). That's where I gained my love for turtles.

When I lived in Germany there was this little pond in the middle of the village. My best friend and I would often visit it and feed the couple turtles (sliders) that lived in it (they loved sausages).

I live in North Carolina and here we have turtles in all sorts of different shapes and sizes! The smallest turtle I have ever seen was almost the size of a 50ยข piece I want to keep it as a pet pet my parents told me I couldn't.
I have been to the Outer Banks one time, (I live on the other side of NC) and if you ever go to the Outer Banks their are turtles everwhere! They have these big ditches (4 or 5 ft wide) that Line nearly every road (that is full of water) and that's where the Turtles live all stacked up on each other's backs like little totem poles. I've never seen so many turtles and my life! I counted them just for fun On the drive to and from the outher banks.
