Why do people think Ch'rell wasn't planned in the 4Kids cartoon?
There are turtles fans who believe Ch'rell wasn't planned from the beginning, and than it was a last minute decision to make Oroku Saki into an utrom in season two. In season one it was hinted connection between him and the utroms.

People actually believe that? How would they explain the ending of "Return to New York Part 3" then?

I'm one of the few who truly belive that it wasn't originally planned for Shredder to be an utrom. It's my belief that the first season was either completed, or near completed, when the decision was made to have the Shredder be an utrom. Here's couple of pieces of evidence that I provide:
And the biggest reason that I don't think that he was supposed to be an utrom: I just don't buy it. Ch'rell is going to spend the whole first season chasing after the turtles, when he should be attacking TCRI? Oh wait, he didn't know that the utroms were hiding there. But April is able to a little internet search and find out that the guy running TCRI is a guy named "Mortu", which coincidently is the name of Ch'rell's enemy. Something isn't adding up here... |

Well true... but that falls under the 'don't overthink it because it's a cartoon' category. Or we can stretch it and make some excuse where he would excuse himself from dinner, say he wasn't hungry etc etc. The tea scene has no excuse since we actually see him drink it.
That is another thing that ruins it. Ch'rell is such a hateful ball of rage. I don't see him having the patience to attend a dinner and actually sit through it, even if he knows it's 'part of the act' and important for him to earn respect and a good reputation.

He just doesn't seem like someone to have the patience to deal with humans and put up with them through a dinner as Oroku Saki.

When you think about it, it's actually freaky as all fvck that there's this squishy alien bug masquerading as a human being. Everywhere Saki goes, that little utrom is hiding in the stomach of the exosuit. Creepy when you really think about it.
Anyway, when the point was raised about drinking tea, I too believed it was necessary as 'cover'. Some of the other points raised are very compelling though. |

I think it's safe to assume Shredder/Ch'rell's comeuppance at the Turtles' hands early on in he series would lead to his later, more unglued portrayal. I mean, it WAS a very drastic change in temperament, but eh, cartoons.

It's entirely possible that the Utrom Shredder idea wasn't planned from day one and instead cooked up later on (that sort of thing is pretty common), but by the time Shredder was essentially unkillable by "human" means I think it had to have been in play. |

I think I just have a tough time because I feel like Oroku Saki (in season one) and Ch'rell seemed like they had conflicting personalities. Saki was a ninja who operated in the shadows. Ch'rell was a world conqueror. Over the course of a thousand years, Ch'rell never made an effort to take over the entire planet? He was happy operating as a crime lord? It makes sense for Oroku Saki, but not for Ch'rell. I just feel like the two personalities conlict just a little too much.

As for the skeptics, I've never placed much stock in them. Seeds for the reveal are revealed as early as episode six--"Darkness at the Edge of Town", which not only introduces the Utrom-pommeled Sword of Tengu, but makes features Saki's conspicuously covered stomach--which is far too early for it to be a last-minute addition. What's more, given the way standards and practices work, there is no way Goldfine and co. would have gotten to decapitate the Shredder unless they already had an established "out", and given the limited level of violence permitted in those first two seasons, any solution that wasn't "the Shredder isn't a biological organism at all" becomes implausible. While the plot holes make the reveal less clean than I think anybody would have liked, I think that's all they are--plot holes and inconsistencies.
