Something that's always bothered me about the first episode

When Shredder is talking to Rocksteady and Bebop after the turtles have rescued April, he asks them if they were beat up by reptiles? But he asks this like its an important piece of information and something he already knew but needs confirmation.

Then he recognizes their fighting style when they fight the foot soldiers on the roof and once they enter the building he knows they are Hamato Yoshi's turtles. But how could he possibly know that they are his turtles?

Seems like an oversight by the writers. Like they just needed to get this information out and took a shortcut. Its just something that's always bothered me.

Playmates card art makes it out to be that Saki poured the ooze into the sewer in the hopes it would kill Yoshi (& his pets, presumably). Playmates developed a few things for the show, so that probably had some effect on it.

The first episode took place at a time where an undisclosed amount of time took place between them getting their masks and their first rescue. They never mentioned that they left the sewers for the first time like in the Nick series. Shredder as you know was "Big Brother" and the Technodrome was capable of having numerous surveillance cameras all over the city. But Shredder probably acted like his plans have failed previously, and feeling that his punks weren't that intelligent gave them a more simple description.

The rooftop battle may have been the first time that the Turtles fully mastered the Foot's style, and since Shredder hoped that the mutagen killed Splinter, was disappointed that it only mutated him. He never knew of any other people who could properly learn the Turtles the Foot technique.

Yoshi was the only other Foot Clan member in New York besides him. And he knew he (Shredder) didn't train them. Also, he himself poured mutagen into the sewer where Yoshi lived. He just put 2 and 2 together.
I wonder though, why did he not think Yoshi was one of Turtles?

I thought R&B didn't appear till the second episode. Aren't they in their human form until the second? Or do they get mutated in the first? Also, that always bothered me as well. I have them on VHS, so I should re watch them.

Nope, they got mutated in the second. Presumably, Shredder already knew that Yoshi was living in the sewers (where else would a penniless, disgraced ninja Master live?), and had acquired several pets. What always bothered me was WHY he thought it would kill Yoshi when it was INTENDED to mutate creatures in the first place?! Was he hoping to mutate him into a slug or roach and squish him?

Just conjecture here, but maybe the Shredder assumed the turtles would mutate into giant monsters and they would kill yoshi.
