Official Ep Discussion: S3 Ep1: "Within the Woods"

Hey, I actually beat you guys to making the new thread...

Okay, so the new season starts Next Friday!

New York City has been decimated, family members have been mutated, mangled and flushed away. For the first time, the turtles are leaving the city into parts unknown, fatherless, leaderless, and utterly defeated.

Leonardo's battle with the foot, Shredder and his minions has destroyed him physically - what will his emotional state be once he awakens and finds out the fate of the city... and Splinter?

Donatello's losing his hold of April, and he's beating himself up for not listening to Leo and getting everyone out of the city when they could. Escaping to the off-the-grid farm in Northampton, he's not going to have the distraction of computers and his laboratory to escape reality. No tools can fix a broken heart...

Raph's rage is building - their home is gone, Leo's injured, Splinter's been thrashed and disposed of by Shredder... how will he control his emotions now?

Mike... will we see him mature and show more of his strength as the 'glue of the family'? Our little prankster may lose some of his bounce while absorbing the gravity of what just happened.

April and Casey... they've both lost their family to the Kraangsformations in the city. How will their relationship deepen in the coming time that they stay out on the farm?

Splinter... where is he? How far away could he have been washed away down in the sewers? Is Karai still there watching over him? Or will he be alone? He's suffered a major loss, losing his home, his daugher, and not knowing the fate of his sons, especially Leonardo. For all he knows, Shredder may have killed him.

Back in 'city at war', Splinter had dealings with the Rat King attacking him and trying to make him turn to his animal side more. Could the ghost of the Rat King make a reappearance?

Hard to believe it's only a week away... hope you guys are patient, Cuz I sure ain't!

Stay Tuned!

Great episode! I loved the creepy vibes with, well, the creep. Seth sounds really good as Leo.

I'm hoping for 13. Return To NY should be the return from a hiatus.

Decent episode. The beginning with them adjusting to their new home, Leo waking up and all of that sort of stuff was definitely the highlight of it all for me. The rest felt like filler. Although the Creep was cool and really...well, creepy...he felt like another "mutant of the week", and the whole thing about Raph turning into a flower didn't make much sense at all to me. I wish I could say more, but really, not much happened in this episode. I must say that Season 3 looks like it will be a very nice change of pace for this show, I can't wait to see more.

Seth Green as Leo is just awful to me. Definitely the worst voice we've had for Leo so far in this show...oh, how I miss Jason Biggs...

The actual episode was very good and very creepy. Almost felt like a Halloween episode. Random nitpicks:

- Still not sure about Seth Green's Leonardo. In this episode it fit Leo recovering but I don't know how I'll like it as the show progresses

- The annoying Don/April crush is still in the forefront...why?

- Mikey talking in ebonic slang like, "Homie," and "dawg" seriously what is with that? I'd rather Mikey speak in surfer talk than homie talk.

- The creep is still alive...they do the same thing with every single mutant.

Well that was kinda wild, good spooky one to start off October. Love the Jason sound effect being included.

Voice... gah that's gonna take me a bit to get used to. Sounds so weird... lol Not bad, but just gonna take a bit. Glad they did include a reason for it, good on you, Nick.

Interesting that Karai is still reflected in Shredder's mask in the opening, though I guess it goes along with not knowing who's side she's going to be on, if any. And was that a Turtle blimp?

Glad Leo woke up so early in this and didn't stay knocked out for several episodes.

Was it me or did Mikey scream a bit much in the first half... *ear bleed*

Leo went through puberty in the span of one episode. He sounds like a 18 year old now.

I thought it was a really good episode. Creep was awesome. The jokes were perfect. I felt really sorry for Leo and how he has to adjust. The beginning was so reminiscent of the first movie. Seth Green sounds like a great battle-damaged Leonardo.
Only thing that I didn't like - Raphael becoming a flower. What the heck? Maybe if it was explained in more detail how sucking the mutagen out of him turns him into a flower rather than a normal turtle...Actually, it would have been cool if he turned into a normal turtle instead. The same thing could have been done to save him.

I dunno what to think right now. Seth is fine.
Spoiler:
But I don't like the idea that the thing sucked the mutagen out of Raph and then Donnie stuck it back in him? What? And I'm sorry, but really, why does it seem like the creators actually hate Raphael? He has not had a really good kick ass fighting scene for some time now. WTF????? April for crying out loud had more fight in her. I wish Ciro and company would just fuc$%^&king stop with the trolling with Raph fans. This is bullsh!t!

Unbiased review, I give it an 7.5/10
Spoiler:
(I didn't like the whole thing about sucking the mutagen out one of the Turtles, and then Donnie miraculously puts it back in via IV. I don't know why, but this storyline doesn't sit well with me)
But, I did like the narration in the beginning and the brotherhood, and the team work was pretty nifty too.

Biased review if you are a Raph fan. 4/10 (at least he still takes his place as the one watching over Leo the most, but, I just didn't like how he was absent for all of the fighting scenes. They should have made it one of the humans missing, that way all four Turtles had to team up to fight back. It's just a little irking now, that not only was Raph absent for most of the fight scenes in the season 2 finale, and season one finale, but for the premier of season 3 as well? I just hope the writers make it up real big for us Raph fans in the end.

The Raph stuff didn't really make sense. How did Donnie inject mutagen into him and magically return him to his bodily state?

awesome ep though don't get how raph ended up a plant.... but it sorta did happen like I expected except it came off really odd how raph made those dog whimpering sounds, it was a whole lot funnier when that kraang was whimpering after its cannon got crushed

its a nice chance of pace and honestly, the less surfer talk from the show, the better it is

This. That whole plot line was stupid. But, I guess what is interesting, Raphael is now the only Turtle we have yet to see without his mask on!

I found it interesting they decided to point out Leo's voice change when they hadn't in the past. I am willing to give Seth a chance, but as of right now I wish they has left in the guy who immediately replaced Biggs (well, I wish they'd just left it Biggs, but what ya gonna do?)

idk about Leo being out for 3 months, I can see 1 week, but not 3 months- wouldn't Leo starve?

It was snowing in the season 2 finale, so shouldn't it be fall/winter and not summer when they get to the farm?

I was hoping they wouldn't continue with the 'Donnie invents somethings-that something goes wrong- now we have a problem to solve/plot for the episode' trend. ah well.

Yeah I just overlook the Raph/plant thing myself, don't let that ruin the episode for you.

Probably would have been better if he just de-mutated back to an ordinary Turtle.

Hm. It'll take me some time to get used to Seth as Leo...but I'm sure I'll get used to it pretty quickly (thought it was clever how they blamed the change of voice on Leo's sickness). Other than that little nitpick, I loved it. Mikey was funny - legitimately funny, not just immature funny - and it was nice to see a change of scenery. I think that's something this show needed; I just hope they don't immediately go back to NYC in the next episode...I'd like to see them hang around this place for a bit first (I didn't expect Leo to heal up that quickly, honestly). I also like how the show's becoming less reserved with the violence. It's oddly satisfying to see the characters being thrown against trees and what not (and Shredder getting pummeled by Leatherhead in the previous episode, as another example). Much better season premier than "Mutation Situation."
