Let's Watch: Jackie Chan Adventures
Decided, since it's been just about ten years since this show ended, to watch the entire thing from the beginning just to refresh the memories and see how much of it holds up.
Let's begin with Episodes One and Two, and from there on, I will watch one episode daily Episode One: -Traps still spring -People still touch anything -A well-timed kick conveniently positions a javelin into the closing door, providing a way out, everyone clears the room but Jackie, darts soon start flying everywhere, we get our first meme of the series (BAD DAY, BAD DAY, BAD DAY) -Jackie uses a shield to deflect the darts (something important is embedded in the shield, we'll get to that later) -Jackie uses Spidey-like agility to climb into a shaft and slide down a cavern and bursts straight through a...concrete wall? -Follow him,, if you follow me... (Black and Valmont observing Jackie) -Somersalting to earn a hug...gets a slap in the noggin. Uncle is ever a trap! -YOU WANT DEAD UNCLE? NO, THEN YOU MAKE COFFE -There it is. He said it. Several times. -Lumbering you with a kid for a year is considered less bothersome than telling you about it first. -The Dark Hand...erm...show their hand by using a hand to tip over several vases, Jackie makes the save -More like in your vase's best interests Flynn, but whatever -YOU TERRIBLE SALESMAN -Love how assertive Jackie is here, just going straight to tracking the Hand rather than sit still and ponder their ultimatium, what a hard-ass.... -...And then a pipe has to give way and send him crashing into the car...so much Parker luck for Mr. Chan. -Jackie's endurance sustains him as the Dark Hand plough their car straight into a steel fence -Electrical tuning forks...erm...swordplay at work! -Windscreen wipers to wipe the floor with these mooks. -PLAYTIME OVER, GO, GO, GO -Jackie of the Jungle Gym -It's a gas to be abducted by Section 13 -Did they ever do a flashback episode where Jackie met Black six years ago? Time travel does play a part in the show from what I remember of it... -"I can see this is some very special GARBAGE" will now be my line for most upcoming mainstream comic books -I suspect this phone booth thing has happened to a lot more curious members of Joe Public than Jackie. -"The Stairs"...rofl -There's so many paralels between this and original TMNT with the villians...hardass evil army of crime connected to nefarious criminal organizations, and by the second and third seasons the flanderization is abudant. -Shendu...dude, you could have just sent the Shadow-Khan in the first place... -Jade appropriates a motorcycle and manages to get it down the stairs without anyone noticing. Copy that. -Actually, skip that, they're actually pointing out all the plot contrivances. Good.] -SHIELD NOT IMPORTANT (I told you that earlier) -Tohru kidnaps Uncle, and I presume took Jackie's contact details with him so Valmont could phone him. -Scout's honor...like I'm a scout -Jackie's rooftop walkthrough...I feel the urge to get out the old GBA game -Tohru in the elevator with his serious face while the music is playing. Oh it's an adorable cliche passtime in the medium -Black being all condescending to Uncle -Jade's gotten wise, and I like that they sort of hold back on not showing what the Talisman can yet do. The whole thing was playing off the shield's importance (and lack thereof), the only thing with this of course is if you paid attention to the title sequence, and had a keen eye, you'd know the tailsman was what they were after where it was concerned Episode Two: -"Why's the boss taking guff from a statue?"...ok, Shendu's probably been hanging around a bit, and that gets brought up? "'Cause it talks" comeback equally redundant. -Jackie's probably right to still the question of authenticity of the talisman magic since we have'nt seen it's power on display yet, but he was attacked by an armada of demon ninjas earlier -"Hello? CHEW SOUP?" -Swallowing a talisman like that ought to leave a lodge in the throat or something judging from the size it's displayed on screen -Strangling someone with a tie for comedic effect kids! -Valmont's unphased method in dealing with irritation is so to-the-point ("you will be punished" said almost like a sigh) -Shendu creating a Talisman tracker out of his own shell is a great touch and shows that, Shadow-Khan summoning capabilities aside, he's not entirely powerless in that form -Chase across the city, Jade has incredibly dicey agility on the skateboard, more times than not in the cruel unfair world that propels you in front of a truck, not on top of one. -Jackie deals with the ShadowKhan during the pursuit, but Tohru is there to literally pick up the pieces (how does he catch up with all that weight?) -Jade crashes full on into a "under construction" sign, does'nt trip up or fall off the skateboard, ploughs straight ahead. -Interesting how one Shadow-Khan stays behind to try and complete the mission while the others fly off. -With all this wild agility Jackie does to keep his feet firmly on the bridge's foundations, Jade finding out she can fly due to the Tailsman she's swallowed really does'nt look all that astonishing -"Just wait 'till the Jackinator gets here, you're gonna get so creamed"...I'm...erm...I'm actually interpreting that in a very uncomfortable way... -It's so strange to think Tohru turns babyface and becomes protective of Jade and you see him about to gut her open for a Tailsman -YES, Jackie points out that she far too easily swallowed something the size of a golf ball! -Like the little touch of Jackie trying to fiddle through Fynn's jacket for the keys to the handcuffs in the fight, can't find it in one pocket, so tries the other. Good spot of "trial and error" -Jade has a killer instinct with that swordfish attack! -Surprised the building did'nt cave in -Oh god this end credits song...glad they dumped it after one season. |

You should watch the episodes in chronological order (some of the season 2 episode take place during season 1).
This was a really great show (the second half of season 2 was kind of lame, though). |

So lame that I usually stopped taping season two after the Demon Portal arc wrapped on later reruns.

Zarius did you watch almost every cartoon in existence back in the 80's, 90's and early 2000's? You seem to know almost every series that existed back then.

My favorite parts are the "Hey Jackie" bits at the end. They follow a hilarious pattern.
Hey Jackie, what's your favorite color? Oh, I like alllll kinds of colors....(Lists 10 colors) Hey Jackie, what's your favorite animal? Oh, I like alllll kinds of animals...(Lists 10 animals) Hey Jackie, do you ever get hurt on set? Oh, I get alllll kinds of injuries....(lists 10 injuries) Hey Jackie, have you ever killed a man? Oh, I've killed allll kinds of people....(lists 10 victims) |

I liked the "Hey Jackie" parts as well. I thought season 1 and the first half of 2 were the best. It went downhill after that. The show had some great characters such as Hak Foo, Valmont, Shendu, Uncle, etc.

I had approximately zero tolerance for magical things, as a kid (I'm at about 7%, now) but I actually stuck with this show for a while. It eventually got too mystical for me, once all the bad guys were demons...

First season was obviously the best season, but the show still has a lot of charm to this day. Like the fact that the background colors were intentionally sloppy. lolz

Is this still on Netflix? If it is I'd like to join in on the "Let's Watch", but I'd be joining in a few weeks since I started watching The Tick and I can't really watch more than one show at a time with my schedule and yeah I generally watch one episode per day.
I was always interested in this show mostly because I love Jackie Chan movies, but besides that the show holds no interest to me but I've been told it was a pretty decent show so I'm curious to watch it. |

So much so that I borrowed "Uncle" for use as an NPC alchemist/curio shop owner in one of my D&D campaigns! He was so much fun all the players loved him, and laughed every time he started talking. Then again, JCA was still airing at the time, and they KNEW who the NPC was....

Episode Three: -New Guy joins Dark Hand! -Promising a Jackie with Evil lazer eyes will come out of the temple? This ain't exactly that Ultimate Warrior .Gif you're dealing with here -There's yet another example of fleshy human beings caving in through concrete -Jade managing to complete her homework early before coming to help Jackie...something educationally uplifting about that. -And there's another in-show meme is born: I'M SORRY, I'LL BRING IT BACK, THANKYOU! -Dark Hand speed off of a gorge, land hard in water, don't come out bruised...just like in cartoons -It's still real to Paco dammit! -Another meme born (EL TORO NEVER REMOVES HIS MASK) -Wear a belt Tohru -"If I lose...El Toro will be unmasked", but what if you're not booked to lose Jackie? Or...is this a shoot brother? -When does this air on Lucha Underground? -No, come back New Guy! -"Nobody nails Tohru"...I'm interpreting that in a weird way again... -Good fight. Shurikens, tent poles as makeshift staffs, some battle damage, neat stuff. -Paco...we've all been there...but we still watch -Reminded a bit of the climax to that Mission: Impossible: Rouge Nation trailer -ROFL, Jade slides to the left...hears Jackie yelp...slides to the right again (for added confusion, I actually can't tell left from right in reality) -...And slides to the left again to get the Talisman. Brilliant visual gag -Should I be watching this after the recent crash in the Alps? -A lesson all wrestlers will never learn because they fear the likes of UFC -Teach a kid that young to be a wrestler? Don't be Bill Demott El Toro

The show's soundtrack was really good too. I've tried - in vain - to find samples from the show.
You know which episode really stank? The one with that monkey puppet guy. Like DVDrips? |

Episode Four:
-A lens by any other name… -The head of the museum is not too far off with the belief the Dark Hand poseses no serious threat -Jackie being assertive and in active pursuit of Ratso rather than let him slip off. I can dig it. -Well Jackie usually ends up looking the Turkey Jade, that there’s where the spirit lies! -“You got in that’s so cool”…you got in before him, that’s..erm..cooler? -Quite like the differences in how Viper and Jackie are able to break through the security codes for the puma and talismans respectively. Viper depending on tech and Jackie depending on a more hands-on practical touch -Intergender fighting, this is my bag! -Valmont’s a monopoly fan! -I did dig the morally grey area of Jackie resorting to thievery to try and one-up the Dark Hand, he’s very open to admitting his mistake when Uncle says he was a negative influence on Jade -“Do not pull any more vipers”…gawd, stop interpreting these the wrong way! -Jackie not getting the word play on two separate occasions…laugh-a-minute -Valmont slithers in like a snake to…aqquire the snake -Keep an eye on that moose…you’ll be seeing a lot of that in this series on occasion if memory serves me correct -SORRY I BRING IT BACK THANKYOU -Doing battle over inflatables…reminds me of the 2002 Spider-Man -Pretty sure I’ve seen this happen in an episode of M.A.S.K |

Episode Five
-I’ve read about the Tortoise and the Hare, but never the Hare on the Tortoise -Toes…nose…god this rhyme blows -Nice bit of continuity with the appearance of El Toro on the tv and Jade talking about her adventure in Mexico to her disbelieving classmate -No, no, Jade, most bad guys watch tv so they can best learn how to BE bad guys given the amount of crime dramas we have influencing the dregs of society -First mention of a lost treasure promised by Shendu, and the first reference to Valmont being hurt in the piggy bank by the expenses covering the Talisman hunt…things that will have pay-offs down the road if memory serves correct again -That there’s a big bite. -Man, I can tell why people get inspiration for the “Dark Jade” fanfiction project (look it up on TVTropes) -A fine keanti for Doctor Nivor? -We’ve got to have MONEY -Finally, an enforcer who actually overhears incredibly loud conversations -Jackie deconstructs Ratso on a construction veichle -Tohru feels the need for speed -And there’s your movie reference…and no it’s not Three Days of the Condor -I’ve heard about speed dating, but this is speed raping! -It has’nt been a good week for flights -Enhanced speed aside…is’nt Jade supposed to be locked up? How did he get through the door? -Jackie disposes of the chef..and now they remember it’s locked? -And back to bragging for Jade. Pretty sure there’s a life lesson here that was’nt learned. Good continuity though |
