Should we divide TMNT gens up like Pokemon gens?
So you know how Pokemon divides up each part of the games/anime into separate generations? Should we do that for TMNT? If so:
Gen 1: 1984-1996 Mirage Comics, Original TMNT cartoon, original live-action movie trilogy, Archie TMNT Adventures, and original Playmates toy and videogame releases. Gen 2: 2001-2009 Mirage Volume 4 and Tales reboots, 2k3 TMNT cartoon, 4th TMNT movie, Playmates 2k3 toy releases, videogames, etc. Gen 3: 2011-Present IDW TMNT comics, Nick TMNT cartoon, 2014 Movie series, and associated toys/videogames/merch. I kinda leave out Next Mutation and Image because they were sort of "inbetween" gens and didn't make as much impact. Also they clearly came after the original TMNT fad was dead, as both Volume 2 of Mirage ended, the original cartoon was over, and Archie and the movie line were done. Thoughts? |

Uhm, the main reason Pokemon is divided into generations is that they add a batch of new marketable critters every couple of years.
With TMNT it's better to think of it in terms of continuities or reboots. |

We've always done this with "OT fans", "2k3(NT fans)" and "Nick fans". We basically talk about the whole generation. Now, TNM would definitely be part of the "OT" generation, it aired a year after the OT ended and was even in the same section in the old official site. I certainly remember it as part of my TMNT childhood as well.

I don't think it's necessary. Everybody knows there are/were 3-4 key eras.

Sure if it would mean "OT" could become "1T" or something that doesn't imply it somehow predates Mirage. Way too much stuff in TMNT fandom using the term "original".

No, I don't think it's necessary to do that. Pokemon does it because they have so many different variations of Pokemon so they have to divide it like that. With TMNT, you don't need that. Remember: United we stand, divided we fall.

Nah, I think the shorthand we have now is pretty good.
Though, I think it might be time to retire OT and instead refer to it as Wolf Toon. 2k3 is over a decade old, which makes it an Old Toon in its own right.

I usually call the 1987 cartoon the OT here, but I call it the 80's series everywhere else. Dunno why. The way I see it though, it Original Toon doesn't mean it was the the first incarnation, but simply the first cartoon.
And nah, I don't think it needs to be divided like that. I think the way everyone splits each incarnation is fine. |

Same here. Before Nick came out, I mostly read it as "Old Toon", though. Since it would be wrong to call the 2k3 series "old" in 2009-2010. Quote:
