"You were the one who tried to destroy Yoshi with that mutagen"

Wasn't kind of a careless revision to the origin story? If Shredder intended to kill Hamato Yoshi there would have been plenty of less dangerous ways to do it, what he actually did was an incredibly bad idea regardless of wheter or not he knew what was going to happen. If he didn't know what the mutagen was, then pouring an alien chemical down a storm drain could have done way more harm to city than he expected. If he did know what the effects then pouring down a sewer would also be a bad idea, then something else could mutate and cause problems for him, which is exactly what happened...

I think Shredder thought the mutagen was a deadly poison. I agree that he should have found out if he was actually right, as it was a risky move to use it without testing it first and it could've harmed the city. It's odd that Shredder didn't test it early on in the series, as he was protrayed as very cunning at that time.

He's hell bent on revenge and taking over the world

i'm certain the last thing on his mind was worrying about the environmental effects on the city.

Shredder did doom Yoshi from being a social outcast. Splinter can never walk freely among the outside world and will always have to wear a disguise. He also doomed him to living like a rat in the sewers...he's essentially a bum.

People don't realize this cause the lair in the original toon looks all friendly and cozy like its some underground apartment, but he's essentially a homeless man living in the sewers.

He was already doing that though, or else he wouldn't have been there to start with.

Presumably at some point Shredder either saw what the mutagen did to rocks and thought that would mess up Yoshi somehow, or maybe just heard/assumed it was radioactive and that would be enough? Maybe? It's really his biggest screw up though since an attempt to eliminate his one enemy ended up creating 4 new enemies for him.

We all know Saki cares far more about vengeance than the well being of his home planet...

I find it odder that Splinter moved to the States after being banished from the Foot Clan. I understand that he was disgraced and probably black listed forever in his home country, but why move to such a far away country where he couldn't find a job or a home either? Even if he wasn't exactly the most qualified worker, he could have found a job that gave him enough income to survive. Although maybe he didn't speak English at the time yet. I also wonder how much time passed between him moving to the USA and that boy dropping the Turtles in the sewer.

Being a kids cartoon, they couldn't just say directly "Shredder attempted to murder Splinter". So they got around it and simply said that he tried to "destroy" Yoshi with the mutagen instead.

That is one of the weirdest parts of the 87 origin for me.

I mean I've heard of homeless people living in the subway station or under bridges, but how down and out do you have to be to live in the sewer?!

It ended up being for the best, since if the Turtles and Splinter lived under a bridge or in the subway station they'd get found easily by the authorities and Shredder. Although, this also begs the question: How come Shredder and Krang, with all their resources, never managed to find the Lair?

It's actually pretty common all over the world. France especially.

There are "habitable" areas of sewer in New York, though. Quite a few similar to the lair from SOTO, in fact.

Well the Turtles didn't live in a drainage sewer, did they? And I recall someone once posting pics of Japanese sewers. Quite big.

I dunno how so many human allies and enemies had the guts to freely walk in the sewers, though. How many diseases do you risk catching down there?

That wasn't a sewer, though. It was an abandoned part of the subway system. Complete with a train car still in the station!

That being said, there ARE some drainage sewer sections that could be habitable. Would likely get pretty wet in rainstorms, however....

Actually, they DID. (Just not in SOTO.) In most large cities (NYC included) the drainage sewers are ABOVE the "waste" part. They drain down into it, so that rainwater and such flows down into the main lines and the waste doesn't back up and flow out into the streets. It's also usually at a slightly downward angle to facilitate the flow into the wastewater lines- which then flow (and/or are pumped) into the various treatment plants. NYC has around 25 or so, IIRC.

If you can get there via sewer, it might as well be sewer.

Seriously though, in NYC you can take tours of sewer spots that you could totally live in & look like the various hubs Mirage & 4kids turtles had.

They got to it from a storm drain, though. The only reason they could get to it at all is because Mikey fell through a hole, LOL! They even ended up putting in a ladder to get in and out. I'm not sure that really counts.

So am I. There are a couple of subway stations no longer in use in NYC that are very similar to the one in the movie (especially with the tiles and mosaics in the ceiling and such)- and they are also tourist attractions! A quick search of Google also shows some interesting sewer photos below the city, including some sections VERY much like the ones used in the first and second movies. And yes, the lair, too. Spent a few nights a while back actually going through everything I could find on NY sewers and subways, including the NY waste management system's treatment and disposal methods, pump stations, and sewer and subway maps. Interesting stuff. I like to thoroughly research stuff that goes into my stories, so I basically dug (pun intended) as deep as I could into the subject of real NYC sewers and water treatment. There's a pdf somewhere in my research files that lists every pump station and treatment plant in and around the city, both in use and inactive ones. It was about 30 pages long..... "Dry" reading, maybe, but useful!

There are actually people in real life who live in subways who aren't homeless people?

What are they, mole men?
