1. You've misread whatever you've been reading. They have not taken power, they have won the most votes in the state elections of Saxony-Anhalt (a sparsely populated state in the east) yesterday. Since they don't have a majority and other parties refuse to work with them, it remains to be seen what this win will mean for the state.
2. Think of them as Germany's Republicans. And by Republicans, I mean modern day Republicans, not 1980s Republicans. Deportation, anti-immigration, pro-Russia, ties to Neo-Nazi groups etc.

International and national media are going nuts over this because it's the AfD's biggest win yet but it is not without precedent in the last couple of years.

There's a full Wikipedia page devoted to that. It's often stuff like candidate X is friends with a convicted Skinhead or candidate Y coincidentally lives in a mansion that hosted a party for a Neo-Nazi group who brought their Nazi memorabilia and so on.

Funny enough, when I first heard of the AfD several years ago, a lot of people didn't consider it a far-right group. Did the party's ideology shift with time?

The closest thing to a Nazi party in Germany for a long time was, I believe, the NDP, which is now called Die Heimat. But it's quite an irrelevant party, isn't it?

From what I gather based on things I've seen Germans say online, Sachsen/Saxony is the most backwards of all German states. Dunno if Saxony-Anhalt is put in the same bag as well.

Interestingly, I follow a Bavarrian who votes AfD on Twitter and he follows me back. We're both fans of the same 80s anime series. The guy is definitely not a Nazi by any means, though. He strongly condemns the Holocaust, likes Jewish people, and is pro-Israel. He seems to be a proud Catholic, he doesn't like Muslims much and is not too keen on the "woke" approach to trans people, however. He's a conservative guy, but that's it.

You're replying to a post I made in 2017, for the record.

I still maintain the same opinion, more or less. But there's also Saudi Arabia supporting Wahhabism, although I don't think they do it that much anymore? But they're also bombing Yemen. As for UAE, I believe they're also involved in that, plus Sudan, which is in Africa and not the ME.

As for Israel, its creation angered a ton of Muslims, as we all know. But we shouldn't scapegoat it as the culprit of all issues in hat hornet's nest.

Wait, there were no deportations and anti-illegal immigration sentiment in the 80s amongst Republicans? That wasn't even something you'd hear any debate about on the news because both the Republicans and Democrats were pretty united on it. And I wouldn't say Republicans are any more pro- or anti- Russia than they were in the 80s, minus the threat of the Cold War back then. If Russia plays nice then we play nice.

So that just leaves these tenuous "ties to Neo-Nazi groups" in this "Far Right" party in Germany, I guess? To explain how they're "Far Right"?
