Canada decides the F-word is not taboo for radio listeners' ears

Canada decides the F-word is not taboo for radio listeners' ears

Quote:
Country’s broadcast watchdog rules that the word is now so commonplace that it is no longer as vulgar as it once was

It may be still be too blue for English speakers, but authorities in*Canada*have ruled that the word “****” is no longer taboo on French language broadcasts as its use is so commonplace.

The Canadian Broadcasting Standards Council (CBSC) had previously classified the word as being suitable only for adults in both French and English, banning its use on radio and television to beyond the evening watershed and even then, only with a warning.

But after complaints from listeners that the French-language Montreal radio station CKOI-FM had twice aired clips with the word this year, it changed its mind in a ruling released Wednesday.

The CBSC agreed with the station’s argument that “****” was now “part of the common French spoken language” and therefore does not have “the same vulgar connotations when used in French.”

“The (CBSC) panel emphasises, in this regard, that language is evolutionary and reflects current society,” it said in its decision.

In a following statement it added: “Although the CBSC has previously said that the f-word should not be broadcast on radio during daytime or early evening hours, it established in a previous decision regarding the use of the word in a French-language television program, that using the word “****” in French does not have the same vulgar connotation as it does in English.

“If the word is used infrequently and not as an insult towards a particular person, it will be deemed acceptable in the context of French-language programming.”

In the first clip, the singer Madonna could be heard swearing during a women’s march against US President Donald Trump. In the second, Green Day lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong could be heard saying it in a concert excerpt.

What is there to celebrate?

Or it's another case, where anything that brings more "freedom" is celebrated just because?

But, I guess, "keyboard-progressives" will latch on any stupidity, because "it's freedom!11!!".

For someone who dearly loves to say whatever the fvck he wants, you don't seem very excited to see that right preserved for others.

Shocking.

True, true. I still remember the outrage against Janet Jackson.

that moment when you've clearly run out of reasons to rail against "keyboard-progressives"

Not in his case.

I am just trying to understand, what so cool about allowing usage of profanity, that some people act all giddy about? What is so progressive or good about?
It's like you don't hear this **** in day-to-day life or somebody had removed limits on how many ****s you can give in regular discussion.

Or is that just because any "victory for the personal freedom, no matter how strange it is, is awesome!!"?

And with "progressives" like you, normal people will never run out of reasons to laugh about you.

Shocking.
What allowing usage of profanity has to do with criticizing anything?

[dramatic mode on]
Or it's just that out dear "keyboard-progressives" with such high intellect, great morality, paragons of virtues are incapable to make a point without using profanity?

And Glorious Canada finally allowed to give as much ****s about Trump as possible!! Yay!! Big ****ing ahcievement!! I am so happy about your ****ing cause!! Now you ****ing finally can ****ing fight Trump full force!! Yay! By using as many ****s as you want on Canadian radio! That' what was missing to defeat him!! Yay!!
All is ****ing right in the world!! ****!! ****!! ****!![/dramatic mode off]

P.S.
Still salty about lost discussion? That's what happens when you use illogical ******** to prove your points.

P.P.S.
BTW, it was allowed only on French radios, where it doesn't consider the same "weight" as in English.
A wonderful achievement for a wonderful progress!! All francophones of US will be happy...
Oh, wait...

Were I ever to run for public office, I'd just speak in nothing but four-letter words and keep paying the fines as I mocked them and the FCC for not allowing me to speak like a true American.

I promise you, voters would eat that up and I'd be in quicker than Donald Trump getting backstage access to a beauty pageant.

I want to agree, but I think that would have to depend on which party platform you ran on.

One qualified guy from one of the major parties never made it to the election because of an overenthusiastic WAHOOOO!
Where as if you run with the other one, you can ... well, we've all seen the news.

Yeah, party would be key. But c'mon... if Trump can win with his antics, I could win with mine.

"Mister Cylons, what do you have to say on the other candidate's position regarding--"
"He can go fvck himself."
"Sir, this is broadcast television. You can't say that!"
"I just fvcking did. He's a check for the FCC; they can go fvck themselves, too."

Tell me voters won't go wild over that and vote for me regardless of anything else...

I mean, I'd be amused as f*ck, so that right there might be worth it.

Cool.
But what it has to do with news at hand and my question, what is so cool about it?

This has absolutely squat to do with "freedom" or "progressivism". But everything to do with Canadian francophones just not viewing "fvck" as severely as anglophones everywhere. It's a microscopic adjustment to a slightly changed cultural norm.

They just don't give a "fvck".

So that's why, at least on radio programs, they're allowing a little less severity. It's not reflective of how anglophones should handle it, especially American anglophones.

It matters even less to them because the word might be extremely vulgar in the English language, but not necessarily when incorporated into French.
Someone in the comments of the article described it this way
Quote:
Think of it like taking on a Mandarin curse word, and using it in everyday life. It's use would offend a Mandarin speaker, who understands the meaning of the word, but other English speakers would only know it as a slang term.
And again, it's just for radio! It's not going to be spouted over every airwave in Canada just because the chains have been loosened just a little bit.

Whoa whoa whoa, careful! All your perspective and logic that succinctly explain the situation might get in the way of the desperate axe-grinding in this thread. And we wouldn't want that, right?

I have asked, why people in this thread celebrate it as some great achievement, when it's pretty negligible and rather mundane news.

No one here celebrated as a great achievement but for some reason you used it as a platform to whine about keyboard warriors
