For me, the boss themes have really stood out (as usual). Mainly the Nanobot Monster Ver. 3.0's and the Foot Gunner Ninja's. I'm currently on Notes From the Underground (just started). Evil Turtlebot 1.5's was good too (as was the location that you fight it in... pure genius).

As for the actual level themes, they're certainly well-done, but nothing new that would require writing home about. Especially when you consider that they reuse many of them repeatedly.

I honestly can't say I remember any of the songs, except for one which had a hint of the show's theme within it. I think it was in the last stage. Not too sure.

It's true that game music these days are not what it used to be. Same thing goes for pretty much all games.

Yeah I agree with Karpo, Tekken 3 had some good music I can remember (especially Jin's) and I can't remember any from tekken 4. I can still remember the old turtles games music..what scares me is that I can remember the water bit from the very first turtles game on NES and I haven't even played the game since it 1st came out..but then wasn't old game music actually composed by people like John Williams?

The music durring the Shredder battle on the GBA game is a remix of the Shredder battle theme from the arcade game. God bless Konami, they must know we turtle fans love nostalgia.

yea!!!! but DDR isnt really a video game, at least i dont think of it as a video game. Just the game where you use your feet Yea old school game songs were great, the more advanced music heard in todays games arent as pleasing as they used to be.

This is how I see it. In the old days, the sound in video games was very limited. Before the NES, it was pretty non-existent. In those days, you had to work to make the melodys memorable, and catchy. That's why songs from the classic Mario & Zelda games (for example) are used to this day, because people put their heart into it to make it good to make up for the lack of sound technology (bless Koji Kondo). Konami was the same way. Nowadays, people have all this technology and power to create epic soundtracks, and all you see is that the composers have gotten lazy. The music has lost quality when they have the ability to do even better, mostly due to laziness or lack of creativity. Look at Microsoft. Certian X-Box games give you the ability to put you're own music on the hard drive to play back during the game. At first it seems like a cool idea, then you realize that it is an excuse to save money on the sound production of the game. Licenced music, or slopped up original music is mostly all that comes around these days. Now, there are lots of good VG soundtracks nowadays(Mario, Zelda, Soul Caliber 2, F-Zero GX, Star Fox Adventures and many, many more)...just not as many as there used to be. That's my personal opinion on that topic.

Even new Mario or Zelda games doesn't have as good music as the older games. Maybe it is because the composers have just gotten lazy, today, backround music is miuch like Movie score. It fits in there perfectly, but you don't remember it afterwards.

I know exactly what you mean. I still catch myself absent-mindedly whistling the Zelda theme to this day. It's been a long, long time since I could say that about the music from a video game.

Coming from a Hardcore Videogame Music Lover, I agree when you say today's game music has lost its quality.

Here's my two cents:

I think videogame music back then were so awesome because they were repetitive. You didn't have to wait for a song to play a favorite part. I mean, it's ok to have a remix every now and then, but don't make the song lose its originality.

Plus, videogames back then had their own theme songs.

Streets Of Rage 2 for example. It used the theme song to be the BGM for the final level. How cool is that?

Or StarTropics 2. Remember the main action theme from the first game? They remixed it to be the final theme for the last level. That's what I love about BGM.

Nowadays, game music are just all Beethoven and Bach-like, not that it's bad, but come on!

Look at Halo. Awesome game...but which song is the theme song? Is it the one at the Title Screen? And most of the time, it's quiet music you can hardly hear.

The only music I think is awesome is Super Mario Sunshine, StarFox Adventures, F-Zero(X, GX), Legend of Zelda: (OoT, WW, Four Swords), Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles , and Sonic Adventure 1 and 2.

Now that I think about it, Nintendo still has enjoyable music. Sony and Microsoft are just...blah.

Okay, I'm done.

That's a really good point. The repatition really does make the songs stick in you're head, and they were so well written that you can hum them eternially, and never get tired of it. That's the coolest thing about classic VGM. *runs to RPG Gamers FTPs to drain the few soundtracks that I haven't leeched yet*

*edit* I just realised something. Sega is also extremely good at VGM. Just think how many songs went into F-Zero GX, each of which is repetative, yet memorable. The mix of different styles is amazing as well. Then there's the pilot themes which is truly an amazing effort. So many (about 40), yet each so high quality. Sorry, just got done beating master class on the GC. I'm done drooling now .

I agree with everyone. Except Halo does have a theme and it's actually one of the few memorable themes in awhile. It plays a bunch of times throught the game. It's something to the form of: do do do dooo, do do do dooo, do dodo DO do dodo DO, do do do DODOOOO , then it repeats from there. If you hum it pretty fast using the breaks marked with the "," it should be familiar. If you've played Halo at all of course. I thought Super Mario Sunshine had a real good soundtrack too. I was humming to the overworld music for a long while, I actually forget it now, which kind of proves the point everyone was making.

Actually thinking about it games music has changed (but maybe not for the better..it's debatable)

I mean take Burnout 2, the music is written to be continuous and rock-ish and then when you burnout it adds in a solo or another guitar to beef it up, which I think is quite clever. Ghosthunter has the music changing to suit the mood and there's other games. My point being that games are now becoming more film like and the old ones were more cartoon like and aimed at a younger market, so that explains the change in game music style

At least that's my theory
