Odd Error in Turtles At The Earth's Core

Watching the series as it airs on METV Toons I caught something that I probably knew but forgotten about. Its an odd voice over error. Shredder says to Krang over the Com-Link, "I still don't know why you brought us up to this prehistoria!" as the first sentence of dialogue between them, but instead of James Avery or his substitute for the period Dorian Haywood. Its instead Peter Renaday using his mob boss voice. Any idea how this would have happened? Some of the errors are explainable like the wrong mask color or miscolorings on character models for a few seconds or even Krang being the wrong color throughout 'Return of The Techndrome", however this one is unique, its not one Turtle actor speaking in the place of another like when the animators do not follow the script. Any ideas on how this particular error occured?

This was in season 3 and I think that’s when the errors were most common. I read somewhere that voice sounded like Big Louie, someone who hasn’t yet been introduced. My guess is this error was for the same reason as the other errors, I think at the time they were trying to make 65 episodes, which is where they got at the end of season 3. I think they were rushing everything to make it to 65 episodes and that’s why errors were so common.

I remember people noticing this when the Lionsgate dvds came out a million years ago. Kinda funny and I’d love to know the whole story, but I’m sure we never will.

I don’t think it’s really fair to call this an “error” though. They clearly did it on purpose to try and patch a hole. Maybe Avery left early that day and they realized they missed that line so just had Reneday wing it. I’m sure very few kids noticed it back in 1989.

The OT episodes were rushed out on a quick schedule that you could tell they had no time to re-record lines. That's why whenever Don or Raph's VA were "absent" for the day, they just recast them for that one episode. Like would it have killed them to delay the episode till the VA's came into the office or something?

Like the whole production of the show must have been insane to recast a main character for a single episode because Rob Paulsen or Barry Gordon was busy or sick for that day.

To be fair, this isn’t exclusive to the TMNT. That was just the work environment of animation during that time period.

You may be onto something there. Its not something dumb the animators did but just a single sentence in which Shredder sounds like Big Louie. Its funny how it only caught my attention now. I went back to check my DVD copy after this and sure enough it was on that edit as well so its always been there.

I know there was a two episode recording that Peter Renaday had the flu and was unavailable so Townsend Coleman did Peter's assigned voices and while Townsend got Peter's check Townsend wrote Peter a check for the exact amount. I like reading little stories like that. Nines is probably right, Peter was asked to wing it when a few lines might have had to be rerecorded when James was unavailable and perhaps its prior to bringing in Dorian Harewood to be a sub.

I know its one of the oldest Drome rules but I don't think its a big deal. Here it is at 5:18-5:22.

James Avery Missed a day of recording and they moved ahead with Peter for a line.l budget/time = error.
