That was Diaz vs Perry. That was incredible - honestly that one should wind up in my "classic fights" folder on my home media server. It was great - Diaz got the $#!( kicked out of him but he kept reconfiguring and hung in there when most other people would have gone done. I was authentically impressed there, it was awesome.

I‘m not asking this to disrespect anyone‘s likes here but is the appeal of MMA that you get to watch people kicking the living sh*t out of each other? Like watching porn but with a… diferent kind of flesh slapping? Or is it actually the Martial Art part of it?

Well MMA started like literally Street Fighter with each person being great at a specific style but it quickle devolved into one style as people just took what worked best from all martial arts and fighting techniques., SO it usually goes a bit of striking until thres a takedown and then it's jujistsu.

I guess people sometimes just want to see people fight for real, but with more technique than boxing.

It reminds me of the times I wish wrestling was real. I always wished at least for the Royal Rumbles, just let the guys have at it and let the writers figure it out based on the winner. I particularly hate it where you already know who's going to win because 'storywise' it's the next step for said person to get to challenge the champ. I remember there was one years back where there was a stipulation like, if Roman Reigns doesn't win the Rumble he'll face some consequence (fired or can never challenge the champ or something or other, I forgot). So seeing that naturally that wasn't going to happen, it was annoying to know weeks in advance that he was gonna win the Rumble because he just had to 'so his story could continue'.

Same with battle royales. Just let the guys go and write around the winner.

If you have to ask that at all you probably won't "get it." But it's like boxing... two people get in the ring and (it is supposed to be anyway) one of them wins by sheer force of will and skill. It's applaudable. And unlike boxing it is not just fisticuffs but "anything goes," within reason. In a way it's a little bit like the difference between soccer and American football, only if American football allowed you to do hockey and basketball stuff also.

It's one of the most singularly skilled sports out there that actually gets to the heart of the competitors in a way that they only claim happens in larger sports like Basketball or Football, where it can be true, but is actually mostly rhetoric used to pad how an individual game might have gone.

Additionally, it brings a sense of reality to combat sports because it shows the real chaos involved in a physical altercation more than any other combat sport. Boxing is fascinating because if you watch enough of it you begin to see who is actually fighting as a sport (which is respectable - guys like Mayweather are clearly sport fighters). But MMA is a sport that intersects reality in a way that others do not.

I can't address that on behalf of everyone. There are a lot of weirdos out there - it's not like that for me and honestly that paradigm never even entered my head as a possibility. But now that you surfaced it? I'm sure it's true to someone.

Honestly, whether anyone here believes it or not my point of view is that the regular person here on the Drome forums was the kind to create a circle around a fight and get hyped up about it in a maladaptive way. I was never that guy. And that's' not me arbitrarily $#!((ing on things here - that's me $#!((ing on things here in an honest evaluation of your question.

Since I grew up on Ninja Turtles, Power Rangers, 3 Ninjas, and then later Dragonball Z fighting has always fascinated me. I even took Taekwondo as a kid, did I spell that right? I also got bullied a lot and would fantasize about kicking their a55es while working out. I started doing a lot of push ups and sit ups when I was 12 before I was allowed to lift weights. I can't stand watching sports because to me it's so boring to watch, but I can be entertained with a boxing or mma fight. I also like watching chess games and pro skateboarding.

I did the same thing. Did it along with a myriad of other sport interests, got out of it when I thought it was garbage after green belt.

Our "virtuous" instructor emphasized the 'controlled sport nature" of it to everyone, and then I got paired up against some f'n kid whose Dad was in the stands yellin' "KILL HIM!!" in support of his son. Who, was clearly counseled to take the tournament more like a free-for-all street fight for points; while the rest of us, myself included, were prepared for a skill exhibition.

That was a learning experience right there, I'll tell ya. Ass absolutely, unequivocally handed to me that day.

I was also a green belt. I should have been promoted to blue because I know that I did everything perfectly during my test. Somehow I didn't get the promotion when I thought i deserved it so I quit because of that. I never competed in a tournament, but I did spar with my sparring gear a lot.

I did karate in 1st and 2nd grade and then judo in 3rd and 4th grade. My school had them as extra-curricular activities. After that I never fought again. One of my local gyms has kickboxing classes and such, though. I think I might give that a try.

As for MMA, I tried getting into it around 2009-2011 when Brock Lesnar was there, but I just couldn't bring myself to care. I didn't know who most of the guys were and they only fight what, 3 times a year each? Plus the fighting is not that exciting. Too much hugging in the corner.
