I honestly like it.
I wish they had rounded the head a little more (though I still feel it it less angular than the FF head).
When comparing it to the other 2 original concept arts I do think that this one more closely matches what we will see in the series. 2K3 was a lot more detailed, FF only slightly so (and more rounded), I think what we see here is pretty much what we'll see on TV (though maybe less details like shading).
I don't mind the pupils but I do prefer it without (especially since we have had 6 seasons without already, no need to change now).
I hope Murphy posts more previews like this soon! But I'm guessing the first big push will be Toy Fair where we may see a preview of the new figures and learn more details of the overall series (and hopefully the subtitle if we don't know it by then).

Well this is what Murphy posted withe the picture;
"A piece of character design art for the as-yet-untitled sub-branding of the TMNT 2008 cartoon season."
So I'm guessing this will be subtitled.

Less acute maybe, but not less angular. That's like saying that a hexagon is less angular than a triangle.

I think it looks pretty good. A bit pointy, but I'd get used to that quickly I imagine. I'm not a big fan of the big feet, but it didn't detract form the movie at all so I don't see why it'd make a difference here. I just have one question. Keep in mind I know nothing about animation. Why are sharp edges cheaper to produce than curves?

They could also call it TMNT.
Or "April & Casey: The TMNT Story". ^_^ Not sure, but I think it would cost them more lawyer expenses to call it something that doesn't start with "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles".

Why are sharp edges cheaper to produce than curves?
Same reason why most people find squares easier to draw than circles. Also, it's not sharp edges versus curves. It is simple shapes (contours) versus complex shapes/contours. Powerpuff girls design is filled with curves, for example. It's just very simplistic and basic in its geometry.
If a shape is closer to something universal, it will be easier to draw. If there is extra baggage (detailing) hanging off, it has to be animated and that takes time. Strip it away down to the bare minimals. Get rid of those extra muscles, the grooves in the shell. Either it will take longer to draw on paper or it will take longer to render on the computer.

If this stupid writer's strike happens, this may not make it for a while. Let's hope they can settle their dispute and get to work on this show right away. That is, unless they already wrote the 13 scripts...

Wow, I step away for a few days and the whole place goes nuts.
Just saw the new design and I have to say, it's not bad. I could roll with this. Of course I will miss the detail/curves of the original 2k3 style, but I won't be losing any sleep over it. I'm just glad that we're back to the rich deep colors. In Fast Forward the turtles' skin were like..."fluorescent." And of course I'm grateful that we're back to the present. Can not wait to see the other brothers! I'm kinda hoping they make them distinct in shape and size.
You know, this style kinda reminds me of *KriStALKaLEi (http://kristalkalei.deviantart.com/)'s turtle design as seen here (http://kristalkalei.deviantart.com/art/All-Four-Final-Color-57278684). Of course, sans the spots and stripes and stuff.

Probably the weakest part for me are the legs, actually. You get those sharp angles of the muscles and cut to those thinner ankles and it almost looks like the legs are deformed. That's something that will improve when they're in motion, but still.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed this. Luckily, this is still work in progress, so there's still time to fix it up a bit more. Really, all they have to do is make the faces a little wider, and a bit of touch up on the legs should satisfy most people. They only need to do minor tweaks.
Also, I'm glad they were willing to show off the new designs so quickly. This is a very smart move on their part. The whole idea of different style had the entire fandom up in arms, and showing off the new look sooner allows more time for people to adjust to it. The design's fine other than the little tweaks mentioned above.
*nods* Agreed. Just the eyes and legs. I'm sure the designs will be polished up by the time the new season airs.

I just noticed the three-way comparison now.
The new season's art is better than FF, but not quite as good as 2k3. But if they made a lot of the angles to be curves, it would be perfectly cool with me.
And I find curves easier to draw than polygons and straight lines. Getting them to be symmetrical is another story.

True, we all love our old 2k3 style, but styles change. Sheesh, some people haven't even given this a chance yet. Look at me. I gave Fast Forward many chances, yet it didn't grow on me. And hopefully some of you guys know how much I hate it to pieces.
Honestly, right now I don't care. As long as it's TMNT with good animation and a good story with the same feel the 2k3 brought about, I'm happy. I'm sure I'm not alone when I say this.

So much love. Geeze...
I thought Michael Dooney's artwork for 2k3 TMNT was actually quite decent. For the most part, the show stuck well to the character models. I don't deny that there were several episodes where the animators failed to faithfully adhere to the designs. I cite one of my favorite episodes, Return to New York pt. 3. If you can recall, after the big fight the TMNT suddenly look like cabbage patch kids. Then, season four sees a sudden drop in part two starting with the episode "Ancient One." Everything starts becoming more angular. (The Lost Season returned somewhat to better design, though the coloring was tasteless).
And don't get me started on the FF design. While I think the scripts, stories, storyboarding, visual pacing and whatnot certainly improved to the point of being enjoyable later into the season, it doesn't cover up the fact that the design (but moreso the unnatural coloring) sucked hairy camel balls.
That's just someone's pathetic attempt to make them look psycho cool. but hey, I'll take the 2k3 designs anyday over them looking like Mickey Mouse or something.
Also, those are the cheap-ass action figures for 2k3, which hardly resembled their cartoon counterparts (they're actually modified from the OT toys). The only piece of official 3d merchandise that resembles the actual cartoon design is the Leonardo Hallmark Christmas ornament.
http://www.janesholidaykeepsakes.com/images/2005/Pops_Peanuts_Sports/05.Leonardo.jpg
So, yes -- there have been moments when the TMNT 2k3 design didn't look so great, but I don't think anyone's advocating the FF design or those stupid action figures you brought up.
Though I have to agree about the overbuilt superhero look. Probably the one thing that bothered me about the 2k3 design. Really takes the "teenage" out of the title. :ohwell:
Still, if I had to choose between the Superbuilt Mutant Ninja Turtles and the Teenage Mutant Squishy Turtles look, I would go with the former. But that's just me.

I remember seeing those heads and just laughing. They all look like they're trying to pass a brick or something. 'Specially Don.
I liked the 2k3 style, but of course my perfect version of TMNT would be neither the squishy '80s turtles or the pumped up 2k3... probably closer to the movie as far as bodies go (lean and toned, with big feet and hands), but with different heads. At least push those eyes a little closer together.

I am glad to see this. It looks like they are trying to head back a bit to the 2K3 build but now they have soo many options. I think that must make it hard for the concept artists. They have the 2K3 style which clearly is incorporated in this design a bit, I mean look at the posing.
They scaled the arms and legs like the new movie but there are those sharp FF angles everywhere. They have so many different styles to look at and of course they are probably being pulled in certain directions by the powers that be.
I really don't think it's too bad, but I do think they can go no pupils. It looks way more bad a$$ with no pupils

Hello! Iam new here!!:D:D TMNT is my favorite cartoon! I watched all the classic and new epissodes. Does anyone know what will happen in the 2008 season? Will we see a new shredder? Will the turtles continue fighting the foot? I would like to see Krang returning in the 2008 season because he was my favorite character in the old TMNT series. Does anyone know is the classic TMNT shredder the utrom shredder that we saw in the 2003 series?
And when the 2008 season will start?
Greetings, Mr. Stockman. Glad to see you. In answer to your questons:
- We don't know what will happen yet. Unless I missed something, which I seriously doubt. We have new designs, but no word on plot or anything. Hopefully we get to hear some whispers in the next few months. The closest thing we have to Shredder is Karai, but that's it.
- Sorry to disappoint, but Krang won't be returning any time soon. Or anyone else from the old toon, anyways. There have been references and cameos (late season 1 and early season 2 pop into my mind instantly). Not too sure if we will have any more references, though. I think this season is just branching out into a tone of its own.
- The Classic OT Shredder and the Utrom Shredder are two VERY different beings. No chance for them to be related at all.
- And finally, no idea when the new season will start. I imagine we'll find out as soon as 4Kids think it's time to give a few details about the new season. They usually give a few tidbits as the premier of the season slowly looms closer. We just have to wait and see, I'm afraid.

I'm glad April's hair is a more natural color, but I really appreciated that she had the build of a normal woman in 2k3, and here she's built more like a teenager (like every female character in every show now). She's OK, but yeah... definitely some things about 2k3 April I miss. Casey looks pretty cool, though... like if the movie Casey became a bodybuilder. :D I like 'em, but obviously I would have done April a little differently at least.
Second opinions on them:
I don't like them as much but they aren't bad.
Casey looks like a beefed up version of himself, which I don't like but it makes enough sense. he also looks older.
April looks nothing like her, and worse she looks younger. So it doesn't make much sense continuity wise.. The design could work in a different turtles universe but not this one.
Either doesn't even look like their movie designs.

April looks too transparent. And yes, she looks too young- which does affect continuity.
She needs a larger chest, larger bones, a more mature face, possibly more curves elsewhere, and darker hair.
Casey does not seem all that different from previous incarnations to me.

Eh, I guess I'm alright with April's design. She looks kind of bland though.
Maybe something about her outfit to make her stand out? I mean 80's April had the jumpsuit, 2003 April had the belly shirt. Maybe this one could have...a slightly less belly showing belly shirt? A cape? I don't know.

April's design is too different like everyone says. Hopefully, they'll go back and tweak the look a little more to make her a better blend between the movie April and the 2k3 April.
Casey looks fine, but I'm a little iffy about the hair. It looks too long and too neat to be the wild and crazy Casey Jones we all know and love.
Once again, a very smart move on their part by releasing the new designs early. It'll allow people more time to adjust, less wild speculation, or vent whatever anger they have over them. So far, the reactions have been pretty positive. Hopefully, they do more.

Here's what I posted on murphy's blog in response, but I took it down because I thought it might hurt the feelings of the artists who slaved away on this. I know this stuff is hard work. I'm just critical until the final work is in.
Thanks again murph for sharing the preliminary designs!
Okay.
The designs are clean and simple. They evoke the movie designs very well.
Now I personally disliked the human designs in the 2007 movie, but I guess the new season designs are required to bridge the 2k3 style with the new movie style.
Now here's the result I see so far: The humans are very pretty and unoffensive. They are safe, conventional. Unfortunately that effect of generic prettyness/coolness is that Casey looks rather foppish. His shirt his "preppy" and his overall look seems kind of out of character. If the hair were a little more unkempt I think this would work a lot better. But currently, Casey-in-development seems to care a great deal about his pretty image.
April has given up her warm, caring, compassionate (almost motherly) demeanor in exchange for lowered eyelids, a Winx Club hairstyle, a (short) teenager's body, and very shiny, dazzling green eyes. I'm reading a completely different personality. At last, April is keenly aware of how attractive she is, and not much else.
I know these aren't final. That's why I'm being very, very critical. :P I have faith that the designs will look great by the end, and that at the very least we will have another worthy season of TMNT.

You know it! ^_^ A gentle breeze could kill her. What good would she be then? :goof: Seriously, that's not even my problem with the new design for April. She's just too different. The She no longer looks anything like the same person we've known in previous seasons. As Fledermaus pointed out, there is no longer any implied trace of the same character. So, I guess my skepticism was right. They are still trying to reinvent the show instead of just improving it. -_-
As for the Casey design, I was too overwhelmed with the scrawny April design to comment yesterday. I'm fairly impressed with the design for Casey. He's different, but not unbelievably so. So, I applaud the artists for making a decent bridge between 2K3 and the movie. However, he doesn't fully gain my approval. Again, as Fledermaus noted, he's just too pretty-boyish. But, that's the only complaint I have about him. He's, otherwise, perfect. With the Turtles having been absent for so long (which is yet to be seen if it'll work out that way), it's safe to assume that Casey took his vigilante gig more seriously. And, since he has a lady to impress now, it's not TOO far-fetched to believe that he would 'clean up'.
I'm just curious if the original voicecast will remain for 2008.

In all seriousness why in the world do people keep asking this question?
Well, if they plan on reforming the characters, it stands to reason that some of the voice actors may be exchanged as well. It would suck big time, but if they keep that new design for April, I can't imagine hearing the same voice coming from her. At the least, I would expect Veronica Taylor to at least make some reasonable alterations. This is not what I want, but just what I anticipate.

Funny, I don't anticipate any of this. I have virtually no clue why people jump the gun because of an animation change. People pulled this when FF was first revealed, and actually said the same thing about a voice switch.
The show is still produced by 4kids, uses mostly the same creative team, is in continuity with everything before it, and there's NEVER been one thing hinting at a voice switch from anyone involved with production or any of the Mirage staff. Instead, we have fans jumping the gun for no reason at all, which is understandable I suppose, but supports no basis.

And yeah, I'd be surprised if the cast changes at all. After all, the show is still produced in New York and handled by 4Kids, so why change it if you're just going to be drawing from the same pool of actors? The only character I could see getting a new VA is Hun (if he appears at all), since his Season 5 VA screams "stand-in".

I see your point. It takes courage to decide sometimes. I'll try to think that it's as unlikely an outcome as it's ever been. I just have a habit of validating long-shots. ^_^

Heh, Casey really does look more "clean shaven" now.
Seeing the two Aprils really reinforces the fact that the new one is too thin. The 2k3 April was also thin but she didn't look anorexic.

How is April too skinny?
She looks normal.
Movie april did indeed look skinny but not not in a bad way.
Just ranting a bit, the whole OMG SHE LOOKS ANOREXIC!! is dumb, not to mention there are tons of very skinny girls IRL who are NOT anorexic its just the way they are.
Movie April looked okay because she was surrounded by similar looking designs, but she did look really skinny.
I don't think this design looks too skinny, it just looks really bland compared to other April designs.
These new designs for Casey and April scare me. A lot. While I think the new turtle designs look alright...I don't know. I just can't get into Casey and April's revamp for some reason. And the thought of that scares me. Hopefully I'll change my mind when more stuff comes our way, but for now... :ohwell:

Couldn't have said it better myself.
Casey looks nearly identical- as if he had just put on a different outfit and gotten a haircut.
April looks like a totally different person. At best as if she were a younger cousin. Due to an undiagnosed illness, I was heavier in my teens than what I am now. So there is something else other than the skinniness that is making her look so young all of a sudden.

...and started avoiding sunlight. Look how pale 2K8 is in comparison. Not a bad thing. Just a striking difference.

Not too bad actually, definatley "ages" the characters, whilst making them look younger...

I'm just curious if the original voicecast will remain for 2008.
I see them changing their voices for the characters a bit. Watch "Meet Casey Jones" and listen to his voice near the end when he says: "friends of yours?" Marc Thompson sounds exactly like Chris Evans.

I'd consider the designs a little weird, but I watched DCU all the way from B:TAS to JLU. This is nothing.

Slimer was a piece of sh*t! Man I really couldn't stand that green little glob of ghost or how they made him more and more the focus over time. I actually liked Janine's change of character design. To me it made more sence since people's appearance does change over time in the real world. I liked it when Kathie Susan took over for her.
But I like April's new hair color. Although I have had hair same color as the 2k3 April, I've always prefered the '80 toon haircolor on April.
me too. I was never found of April's redder than blood hair color, it almost looked hot pink on occasion. I like the this flame color red better, plus it looks like she has some high lights foing on there which is nice. I don't know why people are saying that Casey looks more like a pretty boy in this design. Casey has always been depicted as being some male stripper-esch pretty boy in 2k3. It's part of the reason that I don't care for the Casey April pairing.

The typical idea of 'pretty-boy' is linked to 'hygienic'. 2K3 Case was rarely that. Perhaps he made the ladies swoon with his well-built muscularity, but pretty-boy he ain't.

Okay, I just read the fourth post there myself, and I'm a bit confused about something here.:-?
Namely, THAT bit of news was posted by Wayne Grayson himself (he's Mikey's VA, right? Correct me if I'm wrong.), and from what I read, and the way that I interpreted it, HE's happy about the news, as are the other members of the cast. Soooo, MY big question is, just WHAT the shell is everybody around here bellyaching about over this? They start recording in late January (obviously the writer's strike ISN'T going to be a problem for them, anyway), and while HE doesn't have word on WHEN the new eps will air, MY guess would be Fall of next year.
Granted, I'M not overly happy about the Splinter/Serling thing, EITHER, guys, but Wayne and the cast seem to be okay with it. So what's everybody stressing over? Ever stop to think that maybe the aforementioned pair ain't gonna happy about it, either (I know that SERLING certainly won't be, given where the guys and Splinter live (AND how devoted that he is to Cody, AND that he's used to the Jones penthouse), and SPLINTER will probably be less than pleased about being separated (however temporarily) from his beloved sons, but probably wants to keep up with Cody's training til a more TRUSTWORTHY gaurdian can be arranged for him)?
Me, I'm just glad that we're GETTING new eps at all, so I'M not griping. It's the Turtles. What's the big deal?
And besides, if THESE 13 eps do well, who's to say WHAT will happen in the Turtles' TV future?
Okay, I'm done. Nobody throw stuff at me for stating my honest opinion, please. I (FINALLY) got finished cleaning up this disaster area room of mine, PLUS which I've had to clean up after TWO very NAUGHTY and messy pooches ALL. DAY. LONG., so anything pitched at ME through my Internet connection and monitor is VERY likely to get caught and tossed right back through them AT said pitcher just as quickly. Maybe MORE so, given that cleaning up after a diarrhea-ridden Chihuahua AND Boston Terrier all day long was NOT fun. IF y'all catch my drift.;)

I'm calling it now:
Darius Dun and the Dark Turtles will continue to be villains next season, at least in Cody's timeline.
We might see that story plot wrapped up after all.
Well I remember when the turtles went to the future after a few episodes I thought it might have been better for Splinter to stay in the past since he wasn't doing much of anything in FF, I remember some people also thinking this way.
So maybe a break from Splinter won't be that bad. Plus I kind of liked serling...

Splinter stays in the future? That's insane. He is the Turtles sensi and father. I don't get why the Turtles would go back to their present and leave their master 100 years in the future. That's so stupid. Plus Sterling will be back? Ugh. So far this new direction is just starting to worry me very much.

Interesting spoiler. First, I'm quite glad that Fast Forward won't be swept under the rug after the guys return. While definitively a mixed bag, I thought some of the concepts introduced there have too much promise to be abandoned.
The second interesting thing: the return of Scottie Ray and Greg Carey as (I assume) regulars. Scottie's return is interesting, because unless he's playing a new character, it means we won't be quite done with the Shredder (although I hope that's not the case). As for Greg, the last thing I heard that he had dissapeared for some unexplained reason--hence the replacements for Hun and Leatherhead in the last three seasons--so it's good to see that he (and, I assume, Hun) will be back. Also interesting is the fact that Karen Neill (Karai), Scott Williams (Baxter), or David Zen Mansley (Bishop, Darius Dun), are not mentioned with the others. I can see the creators retiring Baxter and Bishop for a while, but not Karai, particularly since a) she's still the head of the Foot, and b) the movie introduced the character to a wider audience, so I'm interested in seeing what's what.
As for the Splinter thing...I think more information is needed before the teeth gnashing. It could work, or it could not--right now I'd say the odds are about even. Personally, I think it has a good chance of working, particularly since it seems his stay won't be completely involuntary...
with Cody still at risk, and with the Turtles and Serling/Turtle X abscent, he (Cody, not Splinter) needs some protection and guidance, which Splinter can provide--he'd have a specific role, something he didn't really have in Fast Forward. Plus, didn't Splinter do something like this in the comics--living alone with Shadow once he'd concluded that he had taught the turtles everything he had to teach? Isn't this the same thing, with Cody instead of Shadow? While I'm not sure what role Serling would play in 2008, I think Splinter staying in the future (but still able to contact the turtles) and having some sort of direction is good for the character.
ETA: It appears I'm not the only one optimistic about this, or the one to think that this may be a good direction. Nice.

I can see this as a kinda "not throwing the baby out with the bath water" situation. This kinda gives a "best of both worlds" feel. We get the TMNT back in the present, but I also think they will continue, at least for a little while in the future. I don't like the idea of Splinter and Serling swaping places, but maybe it's a time portal accident, and the first season is trying to make it right.
As for the VA's wasn't Scottie credited in >>? And about Hun's VA, Greg Carey, he was Hun in the LS and >>, they just didn't pitch the voice down anymore. My friend Bob pointed this out to me. He has an ear for this stuff:
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y132/Jesterangelo/th_Hunattherightpitch.jpg (http://s4.photobucket.com/albums/y132/Jesterangelo/?action=view¤t=Hunattherightpitch.flv)
Here I pitched it down. Not quite low enough, but close,
Splinter stays in the future, eh? O_o Sounds like an idea decided upon almost exclusively to tie up the two dangling storylines in 2105 (the threat of Darius and the seed of goodness growing in the Dark Turtles). Sounds decent. Because Splinter wouldn't be where the main story is taking shape means that there's more opportunity for him to overcome his soapaholism and reclaim his 'worthy character' status. Sounds good to me...

Serling is funny...Splinter doesn't need to be there, it'd be cool to see them work without him.
Plus this leaves the door open for the Dark Turtles and other FF characters to come back.
I better hide now before I get savagely assaulted by FF nay sayers.
Na, it's cool Spit. We are just discussing possibilities here. No blood shed for us nay-sayers
Anyways, it's ranting time for me... *ahem*
AGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!
Why?! Why are they doing this? I usually have faith in the directors and writers, but right now alarm bells are ringing. It...it just seems wrong for Splinter to be out of the picture like this. True, he's been out of the picture before in the comics and such, but...he's been out of it for so long in Fast Forward that it makes me want to scream. Out of character, out of focus. Reduced to an old man with a love for soap operas and cheez-its. He needs his prime moments as well. Remember back in the first season of the series? "The Shredder Strikes" episodes when Splinter was helping his sons fight Shredder? That's the Splinter I have come to know and love. To watch him be sidelined like this is just painful and scary to watch.
Still, there is a good chance of everything working, as everyone has said before me. But...to me, at least...this doesn't feel right. Hopefully the way the episodes are scripted out and how everything is managed will prove me wrong. Like gobo just said, this could give him a chance to prove his worth as a main character once again. And also to see the turtles functioning without their father. He isn't going to be around forever, so seeing them work without him will be interesting. Despite this...I still feel terrible. Like a giant knot has tied itself up in my stomach. The same feeling I got when I starting hearing things about Fast Forward that I didn't like. Hopefully this isn't an omen of some kind.

THAT SUCKS!!!
I had been having a great time so far with all these awesome events. And now they totally ruin it.
Splinter needs to be WITH THE TURTLES! It would alter the timeline too much. It would make it diverge from the comic book storyline way too much.
I do not know how official this is, or not. It may work for a couple episodes in the beginning- but not per secula seculorum.
Splinter was NOT useless in FF by any stretch of the imagination. Look how much arse he kicked in "Day of Awakening". Plus FF was supposed to be a lighthearted season.

As for the VA's wasn't Scottie credited in >>? And about Hun's VA, Greg Carey, he was Hun in the LS and >>, they just didn't pitch the voice down anymore.
No and no. Ray, despite his cameo as the Shredder, was never credited in Fast Forward; aside from the VA's for the Turtles and Splinter, the only ones who got "Starring" credit were Christopher C. Adams (Cody), Marc Thompson (Serling), Sean Schemmel (Biggles, Sh'Okanabo), and David Zen Mansley (Darius Dun, Bishop).
As for the idea of Carey's Hun voice being manipulated from the start...no, I don't believe it. Unless they're going for a particular effect that can't be replicated by human voices (like the metallic echo used when Saki wears the Shredder helmet) voice actors voices generally aren't manipulated to the extent you suggest. Plus, it makes no sense: Hun's tone of voice is perfectly doable naturally; why hire someone who'd require constant voice manipulation, when it's much easier to just get another actor? All your video proves is that you can manipulate a voice to sound like another's. Not only that, your theory doesn't take into account Leatherhead's season 4 voice, which sounded nothing like his original one.

Unofficially, Splinter will appear in a tube to the turtles much like Zordon to the MMPR. That's how it will be. I see Serling as the new Metalhead for the turtles and just appears more often. Honestly, Splinter staying in the future, he'll probably be just as involved as he was in FF, which I think is not very much (relative to 2k3). I really hope this isn't the case, I'd prefer him back in time with them, but I guess we'll see what happens.
Drtooth

As Maxwell Smart said..."Missed it by that much!"
I don't know how to feel. I mean, Serling was an enjoyable character in the aspect he wouldn't be around too long. But then again, what they did to Splinter in FF.... do we really want him back? If he's going to make "I love soap opera" jokes all the time, I don't want that either.
And considering it's time travel, if Splinter and Serling left Cody alone, couldn't one of them come back 2 minutes after they left? Cartoons and Time Travel..... you have Mr. Bumpy tying an alarm clock to his back and sneezing himself back in time... you have Newton the Newt put a newspaper in the blender.... nothing makes sense.
I'm still hoping for the best. Other than that one big problem, we could see better plot lines. That's all I'm waiting for. Plus it's only 13 episodes. They may do something different from that one 13 episodes later.

Personaly i would like to see the Utrom Shredder returning in the new season.. I think that the series will be alot better if there is a Shredder. The Shredder is better than Splinter. The turtles can not live without the SHREDDER!!:):) I think that the original Shredder in the 80 season was better than the Utrom and Demon shredder because he was human and also he wa apperance in almost all episodes of the 80 toon. But we havent see utrom shredder more than 10 times in the new series. Also, KRANG was the REAL leader of the Foot Clan and NOT SHREDDER. Will we see him returning in the new season?. We already saw him in Season 2 of the 2K3 series but that is not enough. I like to see him reurning and destroy the turtles.

I think you might be a little confused. Let me help you out. First of all, we have seen utrom shredder in more then ten episodes. Although not quite as much as the old toon, he was featured in the show quite a bit. Also, I dont know if you can really classify the "Krang" was saw in season 2 as the old Krang...but I guess it can't hurt lol.
Anyways, I actually would not mind seeing Utrom Shredder again either. We have'nt really had much of him for a few seasons, and what can i say? I like the Shredder. I would'nt be surprised if he returned either, as I'm guessing they might want to hype him, incase he is returning in the sequel. Plus, it just seems good for marketing kids products, if they have an arch-villian, so I would not be surprised to see him again. In a way, it kinda sucks that the lost season was based around a shredder of some sort. If not I'd welcome the return of a shredder even more.

I have tried putting this into perspective and tried to convince myself that it could be worse.
But in the comics, Splinter was 4 hours away by car training Shadow when the Turtles are in their 30s.
After FF, the Turtles are still teenagers. They need their father and sensei with them. They need to learn new things. They need someone to guide them.
Hopefully this will just be either tentative that does not happen, or only for a couple episodes.
They better keep Splinter alive. Splinter never died in the 1987 toon. Nor in the Archie comic. Nor in the movies. So why would you need to get rid of him in the current toon? Also- in the comics this happens when the Turtles are full adults. Such a loss in their teens would be devastating.
Splinter is THE fifth Turtle. He is just as necessary to the team as his chelonian sons are.

But in regards to these new spoilers. Splinter an interdimensional being caught in a time warp, veichles, and a giant transforming guardian robot returning with the Turtles? I know they paired the Turtles up with the Power Rangers once, but never did they ever make it THIS literal
It all depends on execution, but it's starting to sound more and more toyetic, more so than FF ever was...
And that takes care of THAT one...

I don't know. I mean, Splinter's their father. It would be like this recent season of Smallville. I'm really wishing that Martha was there. Smallville was supposed to be about how and what made Clark Superman, but with his parents and his major grounding point gone...what now. So it is with the Turtles. The TMNT are a family. Splinter's their father. With out him (for an extended period of time) it just wouldn't seem right. I can see, as I've said before, this season having episodes from both time lines, kind of like the Avalon episodes of Gargoyles. The main plot thread to hold it all together wouldn't be the big bad, but just trying to get the displaced characters home. I'm sure Serling wants to be away from his master as much as the turtles want theirs away. It's a good story device, and I'm sure it's not going to be permanent.

Smallville is in it's final act, the whole POINT of the current developments is to push Clark towards Metropolis without anything holding him back. It's not meant to show the same old s*it anymore.
Character development like this is something that the modern comics should have adapted. Martha as a US senator? Awesome idea, takes the character beyond the wife of who is Clark's true anchor.
So it is with the Turtles. The TMNT are a family. Splinter's their father. With out him (for an extended period of time) it just wouldn't seem right.

Splinter is unlikely to remain in the future permanantly because it isn't in his character to completely abandon his sons. I just think Splinter will stay around to help protect/train Cody in case Darius attacks again whereas Serling...for some odd reason, is sent back with the TMNT.
Maybe Serling is also the communication device with how the Turtles talk to Splinter again? Heck, doesn't this also create some sort of time paradox now that April will find out that she starts O'Neil tech?

isn't every one flipping out a little bit early? Wayne said it was unofficial that Splinter and Serling switch off in time lines, so that plot point may still be in developmental stages at this point.
as to what I personally feel Splinter being stranded in the future with out his sons? I admit I don't care for it because I've always been a fan of Splinter and his kickassness in the show (and I was hoping to see a return of that in this next season) and his bond with his sons. But I'm not entirely opposed to it. It could be a nice plot twist that could make for some good character development for the turtles and may even serve as some agnst for them as and get them to show some more deep emotion that we all missed so much from the first five seasons. I do agree that the turtles being only teenagers are a little young to be with out their mentor but that could be good. In the X-Men cartoon series there was a period of time where Professor X went missing and was away from the X0Men and they had to fend for them selves and that was developed very beautifully. And when Proffesor X came back he marveled at how much his students had grown and how independent they where, and it put his mind at ease that should he die that the his students could survive on there own. This could play out in the same way if the season delivers on thier promise to be come more serious again and less kiddy and comical and give us a our turtles back.
Personly I'm just happy that the turtles are going back to the present and are going to be in the city with April and Casey and going up against the foot again. I hope I'm not getting my hopes up because I was optimistic about Fast Forward and I was grossly disapointed at what I was given.

"The stakes have never been higher, their enemies have never been stronger... and if the Turtles are going to be triumphant they’ll need to work together in ways they never have before."
this line is from the first page of the pitch of the new season. And I think the "They'll have to work in ways they never have before" may be refereing to them having to meld together to work with out Splinter and only rely on them selves.

Yes... in the cold harsh light of day, I personally might have overreacted-- I do remember how when Dan would post the spoiler synops at ninjaturtles.com, he had posted the story arc that was the Ultimate Ninja/Drako thing, where they were all separated... and just reading that was enough to set me off (though I have to admit, it did wonders for my pathetic creative writing projects...)...
I still do not like it, not one little bit-- but God help me, this stupid optimism I was cursed with at birth is beginning to suggest various lights at the end of the tunnel.....

Right, because...why, again? Do you honestly believe the show would have fared any better were it produced by someone else? Cause I doubt we'd be having this discussion had TMNT 2003 been in Kids WB or Cartoon Network--the show would have probably been canned before it even got to its fourth season, if it got that far.
Going back to character designs for a minute, has it been established wether the art we've seen is simply artwork, or actual prototype character models? Cause if they're character models, then this would probably be a more accurate reflection of Leo's evolution:

Do you think they'll return to the very moment they disappeared, or will some time have passed. I'm just wondering because it seems like the space or time travel trend in 2k3 is that regardless of how long it seems to the turtles, they usually aren't gone for very long in present Earth-time. Ex: Turtles in Space, April's Artifact, Return of Savanti, the Ultimate Drako arc. Not too sure about Time Travails.

So far, I have no complaints about Splinter staying in the future (at least for some time). I don't buy that bullcrap that permanent removal of a staple character -- especially when we're talking cartoon shows here -- automatically counts as character development. What matters is how Splinter's absence is executed. If it makes any difference in the turtles' lives and their personalities, then yeah, that's character growth. If it's hunky-dory "well, that was interesting! Let's go back to to life as usual" then... that is by no means development or taking the stories someplace new. You can make the turtles have mystical powers. You can make everyone except one of them die. You can make one of them into a monster. If the characters do not react to these great changes accordingly, then there is no point in telling the stories.
(Part of the reason why I consider the Lost Season to be one of the worst arcs in the 2k3 series.)
At this point, that's what I'm afraid of. That Splinter will be in the future, or, as someone mentioned earlier, he'll take the role as Zordon without question, Serling will suddenly, without any buildup, be the unquestioned robot at home... If they do it cheaply, this will suck. But done well, I think there is a lot of potential for it even now. I can't yet visualize how sending Serling to the past would attribute to give-us-something-new-but-remember-what-makes-TMNT-so-great stories... It's just that the living with a robot thing has been done before with fugitoid, so I'm sensing a kind of repeat and motivation by toys rather than story, but this is unofficial anyway, right?
And as long as the stories and characters go interesting places, I'm good.

Exactly. Considering how bad Splinter turned out in FF, I don't mind not seeing him for a while. But Serling? Well, there's just too much that could go wrong with that. I can see way too many jokes about him having a stick up his exhaust port.

Sadly, that's true. If it were in the hands of CN, Kid's WB, Nickelodeon, or such, I'd be surprised if it actually lasted a season. All of them are cancellation happy as of late, due to the crap on Disney. And considering Warners has something against making a show run past 3 seasons (Batman is the only real exception) we would have had.... like 39 episodes at best. plus, due to the fact there are less and less venues for animated programming that isn't for adults (irony of irony), there'd be no where to put it. With the exception of FF (which was based on an Idea by Playmates, as was established), I feel 4Kids actually did a good job with TMNT so far. Unlike their other stuff.

4kids is the only reason TMNT has lasted as long as it has. Did anyone honestly expect when this show first started that it would go up to at least 155 episodes? That will be the episode count after these 13 new eps air, and this probably isn't the last season since I can see TMNT getting better ratings on the CW and even when the second movie comes out.
Its actually amazing that the series is almost up to the original series in episode count, I could never have imagined it lasting this long. If KidsWb had control of the series, we'd be cancelled after ep 52 and that's it.

I totally understand why they keep playing to their younger audiences. The TMNT has always been popular with the kids. Their original comic books had a more adult air to them but as soon as they started those toons...kids were hooked. And then the first movie came out and they fell back on their comics for atmosphere. Remember how the parents reacted when their kids' favorite cartoon characters swore?! That seemed to be the end of even semi-adult content for the TMNT on the screen. But their fans are aging. And they're still pulling in the kids and not satiating the older long-time fans. Sure we still got the comics but what about the shows? The movies? :ohwell: *shrug* Just an observation, pardon me if it's been said before. I miss things frequently.

I don't care if Splinter was "bad" or "useless" in Fast Forward. I still want to see him. The Turtles belong with their father. And in Fast Forward he was still quite useful. Perhaps he was not beating the daylights out of villains on a regular basis- but he still did when necessary. Not to mention he was their sensei (practicing with the Turtles, the graduation episode), and their father (safeguarding them from the Journal, trying to lift Raphael's spirits), and their friend (going to events with them). You get the point. I don't want a Zordon Splinter. I want Splinter the Rat father and sensei with his Turtle sons.

I can see portion of eps like that. I pretty much expect Darius to attack again and Splinter should revert back to his pre-FF self and kick ass again, hopefully.
Since the show isn't abandoning its FF concepts its pretty obvious we'll be seeing the Dark Turtles again in some form, I wonder if after they turn on Darius (which will probably happen), that they'll remain in the future to take Bishop's orders on how to protect the planet.

It sort of makes sense. The Turtles cant be dependent on Splinter and Cody cant be dependent on Serling. It will probably be written as the next step in their training. If the turtles leave the future Cody might not be able to defeat Darius and the Dark Turtles on his own so Splinter is there to help him. And the turtles are trying to acheive Jonin level in the present.

**snort** oh God that does describe him. I just hope that when Serling gets trapped in the present with the turtles they treat him a little better than what they did while in Cody's home. The behaved like such brats around him

Well, I just learned of the news that Splinter will not be coming back to the present. While I agree that the Turtles shouldn't be dependent on Splinter, it won't be the same without him. I never cared for Serling and I don't want to see him back again, but we do have him back. Ugh! I guess I'm just gonna have to watch and see what becomes of this. But I do hope that Splinter is shown more and isn't overshadowed as he was in Fast Forward. Still, this is a big blow for the ones who love Splinter, me included.

Yeah, in the comic world... because, whattaya know, it works! Splinter died, at least we had a good reason for Splinter not being there.
Now the justification for Splinter being gone is because they'd want to replace him with Sterling/Serling (sp?)? Yeah, that's not even a burger, buddy... that's just a sloppy joe with spoiled sauce bleeding through the buns.

Almost spilled my coffee while reading this. Thanks for cheering up my day. I needed it.
What I meant with my earlier statement about Serling ("I hate him" or something like that), I meant that I only can imagine Serling as a sad excuse of comic relief (while interacting with Turtles like "This is the sitting room, you hooligans!" or "Oh my! I just cleaned that up." etc.) in the show. And I don't want Serling to help the Turtles in fights, 'cause I want to see nicely choreographed and beautifully animated ninja fights rather than techno-robot-stuff fights. :shifty:
If Serling really comes to the present day with the turtles, I'd liked to see Donny ripping Serling up and turning it into a...toaster or something. :ttwisted:

They both really have Genuine people personality skills, that's for sure.
Personally, I would really love to see the Turtles get revenge on Serling and say, "Look! This is our house, and you'd better play by our rules." and have Serling just having to obey them. I'd also love to see Serling screw up and tell people about what;s going to happen to them, or at the very least, develope an admiration for Casey and April for their legacy.
As for Splinter, once again, time travel problem. I can't see why Splinter can't stay in the future, and come back and join them like 2 minutes after the Turtles get back to the present. Unless he meets his ultimate fate in the future.... not a bad concept, actually.
But then again, I'll be happy if this doesn't fall into the same traps FF fell into...
The Turtles having too little peril to worry about, and therefore acting more juvenile, and becoming caracatures instead of Characters.
The show focused more on single episodic fillers, rather than bigger interlocking story arcs that will affect them later on.
The show was too light for the subject matter, and almost tried to be the old, lighter 1980's show, without getting together any of the stuff that made the 1980's show special.
The episodes seemed to only focus certain characters. mikey, for example, had multiple episodes based on the same theme of him being immature.
They put more obvious gags ahead of plot points and anything that would have been useful later

Oh, they were downright hateful to Serling at the end of "The Gaminator". That's what ruined the episode for me. The Turtles are supposed to be heroes, and heroes aren't supposed to lose your respect so easily.

Everyone needs to chill out. It's not like Splinter actually does anything anymore beyond talking to the turtles, and that's exactly what he'll be doing in the new season, so nothing has really changed. I for one am very curious to see where they go with this and look forward to seeing the turtles be a little more independent. Serling is just comic relief, so it's not like anyone is actually trying to replace Splinter with him. He's not going to become their new mentor or anything. Splinter will still fill that role by giving the turtles advice through his communicator. That said, I'd rather the turtles just go back alone without Serling or Splinter than for them to go back with Serling, but again, I think it's just supposed to spark some humor in the stories by having him along because you know Serling won't be happy about being in the past at all. I suspect they may even play it as an accident where Splinter was supposed to go back, but something happened and Serling took his place. Then the time machine breaks, and Splinter and Serling are stuck for the remainder of the season.
On a side note, it would be totally awesome if they focus on the whole space-time continuum thing. For example, something bad happens in the present, Splinter tells the turtles what happened as a result, they do something about it, and Splinter tells them how big a difference they actually made. This could be a very, very cool season if they play their cards right.
Edit: Just pictured a funny idea demonstrating what I mean...
Mike: Okay, now tell me again, Master Splinter, why I need to do this...
Splinter: There is a certain butterfly that possesses a cure to an alien virus that has infected half the known galaxy, but it is now extinct. You must save it to save humanity.
Mike: Hm, okay, which butterfly was it again?
Splinter: It's a yellow butterfly with black spots.
*Mike traps a black butterfly with yellow spots in a jar and closes the lid*
*A giant alien octopus monster appears over the communicator and starts flinging Splinter around*
Splinter: Agh! No, you saved the wrong butterfly! Let it go, let it go!
I know, it's pretty silly, and it won't happen, but it's funny to ponder the possibilities. :)

Huh :o what makes you think that the turtles have any right to say that? With the way they acted the whole stay with Cody Serling should be the one to say that to the turtles! In fact I think it wheren't for his respect for Cody Serling would have said something along those lines to the turtles. I think if he has to be go into the present with the turtles he should make it a point to terrorise their household and be an obnoxious house guest. Turn about is fair play
Oh, they were downright hateful to Serling at the end of "The Gaminator". That's what ruined the episode for me. The Turtles are supposed to be heroes, and heroes aren't supposed to lose your respect so easily.
I've had a hard time finding things that I like about the turtles while in FF, and this instance is one of them. There was no real reason for them to do what they did to him at the end of the episde and I was sort of WTF, when it happened. I don't care much for Serling but their behavior was close to bullying some times toward him. He really should have been allowed to kick the crap out of them for that stunt. But then I guess it was all done for comedic affect, and I guess every cartoon has to have the scapegoat character that every hates and gets made fun of. Futurama has Zoidburg, Family Guy has Meg, Fast Forward has Serling :|
This could be a very, very cool season if they play their cards right.
I think people said that about FF, too. I don't hold out much hope.
that is exactly what I'm thinking. I was pretty optimistic and making remarks like that right before FF preimeired and I found my self disappointed. I don't mind the whole Splinter being stuck in the future thing (so long as it's not done well) but having Serling come back just seems like a cop out and a lame attemopt to keep the whole FF crap fest alive in some other form. This is a revamp right? So let the show be revamped and let the FF chapter of the series come to a close with it spilling over into the new stuff. I'm not saying it needs to be forgotten or ignored it can be awknowldged with a few nods to the events that happened in FF just like they did with the tribunal stuff in one episide .

And I hope it IS unofficial-- or at the very least, NOT 13 episodes long. The ONLY benefit of Splinter staying in the future would be to tame the Dark Turtles (more or less).

13 episodes means less filler, besides some of the best things in TMNT history have been short: OT season 1, OT season 2 (13 episodes), NT Lost Season (13 episodes), Tales of the TMNT volume 1...

Personally, I dont see why so many people want big seasons at this point. We already have well over a hundred episodes to re-watch in the future, and if we get 13 episode seasons now, i would assume they would have a lot more effort put into them...at least I'd hope so.

I would prefer this bridge season to be 13 episodes long. But for subsequent more "stable" seasons (for lack of a better term), they can be 26 episodes long if they contain no major transitions.

The only reason the season is only 13 eps is because 4kids wants to reduce the budget, hence why the animation is being more "streamlined" as well. I also imagine the late decision on the new direction by the three companies is also what caused this season to just go with the simple 13 ep arc.
I'd prefer the seasons after (if we do get more seasons) to have 26 eps because with only 13 eps the show has to be focused on the main arc, and I would prefer 26 ep seasons so we can get a lot of stand-alone episodes and more comics adapted.
The more episodes of TMNT the better, as long as the "filler" are adapted comics. A good chunk of the new Tales would make pretty good episodes, and we can only get those with a longer season.
AquaParade

although it is true that its a 13 episode arc this time, because of time constraints, I still think it'd be best if in the future they did more 13 episode arcs, but put twice the work into them. The show would be a lot better. And dont you think we could have a few good arcs in a 13 episode season instead of just one big one? Now that I think of it...maybe somewhere in between 13-26 would be best...if possible.
odupianist
11-22-2007, 09:47 PM
With the capitalist nature we have these days, there is no way you will get twice the work in 13 episodes.. Personally I liked the 26 episodes. As CyberCubed said, they allow for more adaptations and stand alone episodes, but they still tie in to the main arc. Hell, Garbageman was a filler originally I'm sure, but now look... they have him tied to Hun and they had the second filler episode for the turtle sub. I like the filler episodes.
Coola Yagami
11-22-2007, 10:21 PM
yeah the cool thing about TMNT is that EVERYTHING tied in.... even in the filler eps, the turtles are living in so-and-so place due to past events... Don has the strapping around where he was stung by a mutant bug... the turtles are injured from their fight against the Shredder, Leo's shell is still cracked... stuff like that keeps the series in sync without being so stand-alone. Even in 'Art of Invisibility' the TMNT still had the Sword of Tengu they acquired from 'Darkness at the edge of Town'. It all fits together.

Why is an episode considered a filler if it doesn't tie into somestoryline later? Fillers to me were always clip shows. I don't know I believed Laird when he said no fillers.
Fillers are episodes that have absolutely nothing to do with the main plot or story, or develop characters any further than they already are. They are like "flash back" episodes, or whatever. I don't think, from seasons 1 to 5 (The Lost Season), there were hardly any filler episodes. Only two come to mind for me, but that's it. I haven't bothered watching any of Fast Forward, so I can't say if there are any filler episodes in it or not (though I strongly think there were a couple).
But yeah, I remember when I was watching the interview with Laird on the first disk that he said that he wanted everything to tie in together. No filler episodes, with the occasional rehash episode to keep everyone up to date on events from the past two seasons or something of the like. But yeah...the continuity was something I hope is brought back with the new season...

You know, despite the hype by 4kids-- they (Fast Forward) actually managed to keep some continuity after all. Yes, LOTS of stand-alone stories, but I soon began to see that there was an attempt to tie it all together.

FF did have an arc, it generally had two of them. One about Shoko'nobo (resolved at the end of the season), and one about Darius and the Dark Turtles. (unresolved)
When they weren't around we were simply filled time with Jammerhead, Triple Threat or Torbin Zixx and Zukko.
If 4kids knew that FF was only going to last 1 season from the getgo I imagine we'd have less stand-alone eps and more about Darius. The season was written with the belief that they were going to do a second season of it, so that's why it seems like it had a lot of "padding" and it ended rather abruptly.

beats me, I for one actually like "breather" episodes where the turtles take on a situatuon or threat that is not apart of the main on going story arc. And what exactly is wrong with them any way? Just because they aren't apart of the main plot or conflict doesn't mean that they can't still be engaging or offer character development. I liked episode such as the "The King" with Donatello's solo adventure with that Kirby guy, and even offered a rare glimpse of deep emotion on Donatello's part. Also episodes like Lone Raph and Cub, Touch and Go, Nobody's Fool, and Graduation Day 2105 are all stand alone and offer a nice self contained conflict with engaging characters and stroy telling and even character development. And most of the time the stand alone epside still tye in with the main plot.

I viewed each villain as an arc of their own. If you notice they were all tied up and each had about three episodes. Zixx finally got tricked, Triple Threat put away for good, Jammerhead as well, Shoko dead, and Darius still unresolved. Oh the Gunjin as well got an ending.
