View Full Version : The CONFIRMED New Season
Splinter's Iroonna
10-24-2007, 09:21 AM
New season has been agreed upon by all three powers-that-be!
"The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are back in New York, ready to race across the rooftops and take on all challengers!
"Not only are Casey and April back and ready to bust some bad guy butt, but a brand new, super advanced Turtle Lair is under construction (thanks to some hi-tech know-how Donatello garnered from the future), and, of course, there are all sorts of new heavy duty Turtle vehicles gearing up to roar down the streets of NYC and give the Foot a taste of some serious Turtle firepower!
"The stakes have never been higher, their enemies have never been stronger... and if the Turtles are going to be triumphant they’ll need to work together in ways they never have before."
That's the pitch, and Mirage, 4Kids, and Playmates have all agreed.

Well with all the new gadgets we have new toys. I wonder what the new lair will look like??
I also wonder if Don will be using those round vehicle things he rides on in the opening sequence of Fast Forward. Mostly wondering since those are REAL vehicles. I've seen em on the news alot lately for the cars of the future shows.

Now that its confirmed we don't need this huge thread of speculation.

So um what are the other elements from overload...the wacky crazy Internet guy.
Their enemies? Who have we got left like Hun, Savanti, Rat King, & touch & Go?
I really hope they remember things from FF having the turtles get used to the past again would make for good story telling.
I still say "Ultimate TMNT" is so much better of an idea why couldn't they take ideas from that and implement them into 2k3 and FF's story. *sigh*
Sounds OK to me. Let's see where they roll with it.

They dont have to "get used to the past" considering it's old ground and they probably returned seconds after they left

The description sounds good. They are changing lairs a bit too often- but who knows exactly what "new lair" means. It may be just Donatello adding new goodies to the Central Park lair.
The picture in the entry freaked me out at first. I do not want a CG TMNT series. Usually CG stuff ends up being all style and no substance.
Anyhow, these news totally made my day. Long live TMNT!

This sounds very good. A perfect medium between what we want to see with the show, and what will keep the toy companies and 4Kids happy. I don't like hearing the art will be "stylized"- or triangular blockized like FF, but if it means we get the show to continue, I'm just happy with what it sounds so far. hopefully no "baby" turtles in a non-flashback episode. And I'm sure they'll find some use for FF in there as well. As long as we get some sort of closing.

Streamlined does not necessarily mean totally angular like FF. It may be rounded like the first 5 seasons of 2k3, but with not as many details. Perhaps not as much attention to background and clothing- but the organic characters still look organic.

The only thing that worries me is the animation. It sounds like they have an even lower budget here than with FF...what the hell are the TMNT going to look like?

Murphy posted a response in his blog that the gadgets and vehicles were aimed at Playmates more or less-- you know, more toys to make/sell.
I'm looking forward to this, no question, but I'd sure like to see some of the plans for artwork. And if they're fighting the Foot, perhaps someone has taken over from Karai? Or a WAR perhaps?
Anyway, tis good to know that things are finally moving forward, though not so fast....

There's a lot they can do with the station in Central Park. I worry about the animation too. I'm afraid though with the "new cars and vehicles" that this will be like Power Rangers Turbo lol. Maybe all the cars will morph into a zord!

Thank you Zarius for the (at last) REAL news. *reads*
The animation style will also be a bit more streamlined or stylized (depending on your point of view) in order to bring the per episode budget down a bit... but it won't be as low as these Mii avatars. I hope.
Ah crap. :x
Does he mean more stylized than 2k3 or more stylized than FF? Either way this news pisses me off. I respect shows that have excellent visual design (and animation). Part of why 2k3 hooked me at the beginning was because of its design (playing off of night/shadow and stark lighting themes). I only hope that the second revamp compensates its animation with good (and more dignified) characters and stories.
Not only are Casey and April back and ready to bust some bad guy butt, but a brand new, super advanced Turtle Lair is under construction (thanks to some hi-tech know-how Donatello garnered from the future), and, of course, there are all sorts of new heavy duty Turtle vehicles gearing up to roar down the streets of NYC and give the Foot a taste of some serious Turtle firepower!
... I seriously hope there's more to the revamp than this. It's teenage MUTANT NINJA turtles, not robo-gundam let's fight with our powerful futuristic electronic weapons turtles. Sorry, I don't find this enticing. If they're gonna go for a sci-fi edge, I prefer one that has something to do with the mutant-y side of the turtles. (Part of why I liked Agent Bishop as a villain.)
I'm also disappointed that the lair is being changed again. I really admired the design of the season 4 lair (underground -- I could care less for the sugarland castle above ground) -- it contributed to a darker, more serious mood, and most importantly characterized the "Sewer" feel that was definitely missing in the bright orange and turquoise blue of the Y'lintean lair. I was hoping the series pitches would recognize the good ideas and build on them.
EDIT: Okay, having read Murphy's comments to other people's comments on his blog... my impression is that this won't be as thoughtless as the Fast Forward concept.
I'm still not clear on whether the show will "get back to basics" ... seems like it will definitely have a technology bent to it. Can still go either way. So long as they get the stories, scripts, characters, action and tone right, whatever technological, nano, alien, save-the-digital-world schtick this series tries to pull should be nevertheless enjoyable.

Seriously, I'm concerned about the budget's bearing on the animation. Even a great character design can be ruined by shoddy animation.

I'm not too worried about the animation, to be honest. All I care about is that the season is confirmed and that the Turtles will indeed be back in the present. Now, all we can do is wait and see what happens.

Don't worry about the animation guys, I bet you anything the show will look like or similar to season 5, which was pretty low budget.
I'm happy to hear their bringing back the seriousness of the series, FF is great, had it continued I would be happy, but if they refuse to go that way then I'd rather a return to serious turtles then a jump into something like that baby idea. And I hope to god they steer away from comic adaptations unless their going to do them right.
For villains they still have Bishop, Baxter, Rat King, Garbageman, Hun, Karai could always reform*I know tiresome*, Savanti, I wouldn't mind some comic baddies if they'd give them either new stories or stick very closely to their comic stories.

Watch it again, there's a pretty obvious drop in quality, mainly in the backgrounds. The last few episodes show it the most.

Apparently I hear they're only going to have 13 episodes instead of 26. This could mean one of 3 things.
A) If the Turtles are to have a season 9, then this is just a temporary series until they can think of another gimick in which all parties will be happy.
B ) Not going the same route they did with Fast Forward, and only doing one season at a time. If it's successful, then another season is guaranteed. if not, they'll end the series earlier with some sort of closure, which FF didn't have.
C) This is the last of TMNT we'll ever see. At least, until the next 5 years pass.
I'm surprised they went with such low-gimickery, but I'm sure it won't turn out to be as perfect as it sounds. I have a feeling this idea was decided upon out of weariness. I think it's a great idea, but I halfway expect the exhausted spirits to show in the eps.

I agree, the recent conflicts, and the fact it took three attempts to even gurantee a new season, means that it's going to be harder pitching things for the next few seasons. Once you start thinking about how you can sell the series diffferently than what had come before, that's when the episode length gets shorter and shorter so they can prepare the next toyline.
We're seeing the trust and stability of these three companies slowly disintergrate, and it's causing us to panic more

Honestly, if this is the last TMNT series we see by 4Kids, their Kid's WB line up is going to be interresting. I don't know if it's rumor or fact, but Japanese entertainment companies don't trust them anymore. They have no money to make their own shows. And I do not think they'll be able to keep Spiderman and Legion of Superheroes on that long with their budget.
4Kids needs TMNT. That's pretty much the only non-pokemon success they had.

I'm reserving judgement until I see it, but news of more art style corner-cutting is worrisome for me. There are some designs that will not animate well, no matter how talented the animators are. I'm just hoping that if it is simplified even more, it's in a way that will let it move well onscreen.
And back to the dark alleyways, please?
I wouldn't count out the kid Turtles entirely, as it's still Overload, just reworked (from what I understand). Hopefully it'll be better though. I miss getting up Saturdays to watch the Turtles.

I though tout sourcing was cheap? I'm surprised they don't just do that. It's hard to believe Dong Woo was so expensive they couldn't afford to use it anymore.
Laird funded season 5 didn't he? I think he could pay for half of this new series and get the show some good animation.

This could be pretty awesome. I mean, they could handle some eps on-
-The Turtles readjusting to hiding in the shadows when they didn't have to in the future
-Karai finally reforming and helping out when needed
-More Rat King, Savanti, maybe even Shoate and Bloodsucker
-More of Hun
-the conflict with the next time they face Bishop (we can't kill him, he becomes a good guy in the future!!)
-Worms of Madness???

-Worms of Madness???
They can't do that one since the real Shredder is destroyed beyond the point of resurrection, and the Utrom Shredder is banished on an ice asteroid so he's probably frozen to death now, and if he isn't the worms wouldn't be the same thing.
I'd like to see it but I don't think they could pull it off.

I could clearly see the 13 episodes as being an antidote for the biggest sin of FF. And that was that they thought it would run longer than it actually did. Maybe they're just ordering 13 episodes as of now, and if things go well, 13 more later.
Honsetly, TMNT is the on;y real success, as I said, 4Kids has had on its own network. If they're going to take over after CBS got greedy and cut of kid's WB, they need TMNT as part of that line up.

This news sounds good to me...not too worried about the animation either,I mean it cant look so bad that its un-watchable.
Something Iv wondered about,if they were too go back to present time(which they are now) is...what are thier relationships and feelings towards enemies, like Bishop, gonna be?
Like will they wanna somehow "save" Bishop and work around his evilness knowing that he becomes President in the future and is no longer a villian?
Plus a bunch of other things too...they could kill off Darius Dunn waaaaay before he's even born...I mean knowing so much about the future, they could stop alot of things from happening...I know Im thinking way to deep into it....but this why I think a fresh start is best, cause carrying on like this....Fast Forward will always get in the way of storylines and is just too hard to work around it.

This is funny, my husband and I were just talking about the old batman approach. I don't see how that makes a difference if it's digital Ink and paint. The only way a BW series would be the slightest bit cheaper is if they were just outlines, and that wouldn't look good at all. Especially if you don't have a High Def TV or a digital cable hook up.

I like the sound of it, minus the "streamlined or stylized in order to bring the per episode budget down a bit" thing. I absolutely HATE the way the Turtles look in FF. It really can't be that expensive to go back to the 2k3 style of animation. We are talking about 2D animation. Perhaps FF animation is just quicker to put together, thus making it cheaper. Hopefully they just don't do that. If they are taking there time with this new concept, might as well take their time with the animation. I for one am excited about the return to 2k3. Hopefully the Karai storyline picks right back up....and for God sake's give Leo back his deformed shell. Would be nice to see the Ninja Tribunal come back. As well as have Bishop be a bad guy again. Man, do I miss 2k3. Goodbye FF!!! :)

The Entire Ninja Tribunal
Demon Shredder
The Turtles with the amulets and weapons
The human Acolytes

and maybe Im the only one that would like this...but...I really liked that modified taxi Don made with all the cool armor and weapons, but it was just shown for like less than half an episode til it crashed....so even if FF never happend and everything went on as normal....I doubt it would have ever been made.

Okay, that's not gonna happen.
I am gonna look on the Bright Side! I like HUMOR, but it has to be clever-- the best humor is interwoven in the drama-- and 2K3 during the Leo/angst period had plenty--
Anyway, Yay for finally deciding! I'm guessing the 13 eps are because they took so damn long to decide (and that is HOW I choose to look at it).
:D:D:D:D
YAY! NEW Turtle toons!!!
OMG! I hope they keep the same VAs!!!!!!!
I won't be surprised if the new season has the Turtles looking like 8-bit NES characters.
:o That sounds freakin' SWEET!! :D
well, they might deal with some kinda episode where they run ino Darius Dun's grandfather or something, and then in the end decide that if they alter history, they're do more harm than good and just leave him alone.
Is the great grandfather of Darius Dunn actually the nefarious Hun? O_o Stay tuned to find out... :goof:
As for Bishop not being able to be killed, it's actually totally possible that he does get killed. Future can be rewritten once they're back in the good ole days.
It would be really awesome for the Turtles to have to watch in horror as Bishop is killed. Then, they'd assume that the future has been rewritten, but according to the destined sense of time so blatantly set-up by Fast Forward (in episode 2, Cody reveals that Don helped found O'Neil Tech even though he hadn't lived trough that part of his life yet), they find out that Bishop was revived later or that it wasn't even really Bishop who was killed.
I was under the impression FF was broken up into 2 13 episode seasons. So season 1 of FF counts as 6, and Season 2 counted as 7.
I completely forgot that this decision was made at one point... Thanks for reminding me. That is likely why Murph thinks it'll be Season 8. Even though I can't wrap my head around thinking of >> as two seasons since they didn't save but the last 4 eps out of 26 for the Fall '07 season, it does have more numerical harmony that way. Compare: 26 - 26 - 26 - 26 - 12 - 26 - 13 or 26 - 26 - 26 - 26 - 12 - 13 - 13 - 13. But, don't call me Rain Man. I never shop at K-Mart... or at least not for underwear. :sweatdro:
Maybe the pumping station lair falls into disrepair while they were gone, or Karai might still be evil and have the foot destroy it (since she knows where it is) Or maybe it's just the Turtles preference to move somewhere new.
When did Karai find the new one? O_o Just having been there (in a semi-conscious state no less) doesn't necessarily mean she knows how to get back there.
Though that part saying the new season will be "less humorous" sounds good. :tthumbsu:
I almost agree with that. But, I hope they go for 'less of a joke' than just 'less joking'. Like how the first 4 Seasons were. Realistic joking was allowed, but it wasn't the plot. We do need it to have comic relief unless we want to see it pegged as only a cult-hit.
BTW, I still plan on PMing you back. It's just a lot to respond to. :)Will we see elements that were introduced in NT to be introduced in the fall of 2008?
Well, duh... We saw said elements in >>.

Do you guys think next season was only ordered as a 13 episode season because of the late decision on the direction? Or if the 13 eps move into production quickly they'll order another 13 to bring it up to 26? Didn't something like that happen with the new Spiderman cartoon, where it got moved up from 13 to a 26 ep season that's going to air on KidsWB in the spring?

I think the 13 episodes are just the late decision. It takes time to do a whole season- especially one with GOOD plots.
I do wish they had shown the gradual healing of Leo's shell. If there is any point where it should have shown the major change, it should have been at the beginning of "Scion of the Shredder", with more detail during "Prodigal Son".

Frankly, I LIKE the idea they're trying to incorporate some of the movie into the show. Yes, it doesn't fit in with the canon, but I was hugely disappointed when all they did to incorperate the Simpsons movie into the show was showing the town being rebuilt in an opening, and forgetting about everything else.

Sorry...its the best art style they could have done. The only major difference would be the Turtles presumedly having pupils behind their masks for the first time in this series, which is fine by me.
What is there honestly worth complaining about here? We haven't even seen a single screenshot from next season yet.

Who knows but there has been a trend on them wanting 13,
the lost season was 13 episodes, I believe i've heard they just "cut down" the filler and also remember reading that it was always meant to be 13 episodes.
FF while 26 episodes were produced didn't 4K!ds always mention it as two 13 episode seasons?
So who knows, of course I'd prefer 26 episode seasons as it means twice as many episodes so it'd be good if its only 13 to "test" how this new "format" works.

No no, I agree- I'm very glad that the series is continuing! I can't wait to see the Turtles come home. :) I'm sorry.
*struggles to see why making the designs look like the movie is a bad thing*
Not necessarily bad. Just kinda frustrating that they're still trying to reinvent the show rather than just letting it go back to something that needed no repairs. It's the same argument as the one about incorporating things created especially for 2K3 into the Mirage books. Why don't we just merge all the Turtle-verses and be done with it. Then, there'll only be one TMNT. How wouldn't that be a good thing? :P
FF while 26 episodes were produced didn't 4K!ds always mention it as two 13 episode seasons?
They only mentioned this idea about a month before ep 13, "The Journal", aired because 4Kids wanted to save the other half for the fall. Then, ep 14, "The Gaminator", aired, and it seemed they had nixed that idea. But, since they technically didn't polish off all 26 within the time-frame of a year, there were a handful of FF eps that were considered 'second season' going by broadcast seasons. It just wasn't nearly 13. :ohwell:

Yeah, blending the movie designs in would be awesome... only thing I really would like to see different from movie is the heads - eyes were too far apart on those for my taste. I like the slimmer TMNT a lot - makes more sense for what they are. That is, ninjas rather than body builders.
If it does come to a blend between 2k3 and 2007 styles, no complaints from me. I liked both.

I'd rather see them look similar to the movie than having green yeild signs for heads. In fact, I took a good look at the minifigures and Happy Meal toys... Without the pupils in their eyes, they look pretty similar. I can't see how it's a bad thing if they're getting away from the blocky FF designs.

Sheesh, after reading about the new series, I was actually expecting people to be celebrating here. I mean, they're going back to the continuity of 2k3. The show will have less humor. And... oh my god, new vehicles. I mean, TMNT NEVER EVER had any vehicles before. We certainly didn't have a Truck with jet engines, rocket launchers, super computers, and motor cycles in TMNT 2k3.
I mean, the description sounds... normal! I mean, we're getting a normal TMNT series again. Out of all the ideas so far, this is about as close to 2k3 as you can get. Outside of the vehicles of course, because -- once again -- the turtles never had vehicles in 2k3 with flying missiles coming out of them.
As for the new lair, I think they are talking about the pump station in Central Park. Partly because I think that lair barely even got developed enough in the series. Even the Lost Season barely featured the new lair. Of course, I could be totally wrong, but I don't see how the pump station can't be considered something new.
Yeah, the new style of animation COULD be worrisome, but I'm not going to judge it until I actually SEE something to judge.
This is almost like FF again. You guys jump all over the place over nothing. I mean, ok, I can actually understand the hesitation of FF over the original description. I mean, the show's lighter and focuses more on comedy while changing the entire setting of the 2k3 show. This... this is nothing. This is more serious. The show continues the 2k3 and FF (a show that's actually getting better with the last few episodes), and some new vehicles.

If he IS listening to fans and trying to please them now, this might truley have been the reason he put Volume 4 on hiatus. The reactions to the new episodes are way better then the first bunch because they are better. Now instead of continuing on something that was already good and getting better their jumping ship to a whole new series where they have to start from scratch again. I don't know about you guys but I'd rather have the FF animation style then them attempt to draw the movie characters in 2D animation. Well then maybe I live on Mars because it took me forever to get FF figures by me. I have 2 Wal-marts, 2 Targets, and a Toysrus I check for figures and between all 5 of those it still took me a few months to get all the FF figures. I had alot of trouble finding Raph, Leo, The Dark Turtles, and I never even saw Jammerhead or Viral I ended up getting them for Christmas out of blind luck.

Laird thinks as the person that he began as...a comics publisher. Marvel and DC are forced to retcon stuff several times because the consumers dislike what there doing, they want something new made from the older material, taking a step forward cheats them out of possibilities with the same settings.

Because FF was planned to begin with, the only change was they bumped up the humor in it.
Yes-- and I think some people forget that Laird and Mirage got 4Kids to allow the "Ninja Tribunal/Dark Shredder" arc to be made! It was my understanding that Fast Forward would come after the season with the Tribunal-- and then would come back to the present.
I remember once an email from Dan B., back when Cartoon Network still ran the show (and were being appeased by being allowed access to first-run eps before 4Kids ran them-- yet they still f*cked up the schedule etc)-- he said that getting the show seen regardless was the goal-- keep the turtles "out there". I'm guessing that Laird agreed to the bastardization of the Fast Forward idea in order to get the Tribunal episodes done.
Okay-- I am LOOKING FORWARD to the new season, especially after reading the blurb at ninjaturtles.com-- I say this despite having watched my "Mutants and Monsters" DVD last night and enjoying the awesome animation (REALLY look at "All Hallow's Thieves"! That is some wicked animation during the fight scenes, especially in the motel room where they're battling those lil flying gargoyles!).
While the eyes did not bother me in the movie, I think I'll have a hard time if they have pupils in the new toon, though-- I always liked how they'd show them when they'd remove their masks... just gave them a different "feel".

Wait, is it confirmed they'll have pupils? I mean, if they're lowering the budget, wouldn't adding pupils make more work for the animators? Sure, they can just draw a black circle, but that black circle still has to follow movement and other things. The fact that you have to draw something extra in the first place makes no sense when you're scaling back the budget.

Maybe they are adding pupils to go with the eye colors of the movie. The different shades of brown for Donny, Leo and Raph, and the blue for Mikey. But yeah, I agree ^ that it might make the budget higher, not lower, since it's one more thing that the animators do have to stick in.
But on a personal level, I would love it if they added pupils. Them not having pupils is the number one reason why none of my friends and family dont care to watch it. I know it's a bit weird, but I understand where they are coming from. After growing up on the old cartoon, and three movies, all having pupils in the Turtles eyes, plus the last movie, it makes the new cartoon seem out of place. And mind you, even though the comic books dont have pupils, the majority of the exposure of the Turtles comes via movies or tv access.

Yeah that's true. They're more used to the friendlier look of the turtles. But the funny thing is that the toys usually don't have pupils either. I always thought that was weird as a kid. There were some figures with pupils, but probably 99% of them don't.

I'm guessing that Laird agreed to the bastardization of the Fast Forward idea in order to get the Tribunal episodes done.
No it was his idea, and now he's ashamed of it because of the response it got. I doubt he planned to tone it down as much as it is but it was his idea.
From what Dan told me Laird paid for Season 5 because 4Kids wouldn't hence why the animation is cheaper looking.

I am psyched for this. No cards, no toddler turtles. Not really any super drastic changes at all. I mean, the show was always heavy on toy-centric vehicles, etc. And it makes sense that if the continuity continued, Don would use some of the cool stuff he saw/did in the future to help out the guys. Mikey is gonna have trouble re-adjusting to primitive 21st century video games. It really sounds pretty similar to what I would have done with the show at this point. Actually, I would have tried to salvage FF first, adding some darker elements to it and gradually phasing out the humor.
And we know long ago that they were going to somehow tie the movie into it. That just makes sense. But I digress. I just think in this case that things couldn't have realistically turned out any better.
When The Turtles get back to the 21st century, Donnie builds them some technologically advanced bandannas that have, like, telescopic vision and stuff at the cost of revealing their pupils. :goof:
As is the case with incorporating the movie designs at all, showing their pupils would be a minor irritation to me. It won't bug me unless I dwell on it. However, with how highly Laird was praising that feature in one of his interviews on the old version DVDs, I think it's likely not to change. Laird likes the Batman-look. ^_^ Plus, the show's supposed to be getting more serious, not more friendly-looking (though that may not apply to the question at hand).

I would like to see their future weapons stick around. Maybe the new looks will be an amalgam of their FF and 2K3 looks. I'm sure Raph will give up his future stuff without a fight. Mikey and Leo not sure. I can see Don keeping a secret stash of future gadgets, and the other TMNT scolding him that he will change the future.
I also hope to see the Dark Turtles come to the present. Maybe start another team, with Leatherhead as the leader. That's just me though. I have weird ideas sometimes.

Actually, Dark Turtles is one of the few things I really like-- I especially liked the promise that DNA is Thicker than Water offered-- they'd want to all start wondering at their purpose in Life etc--
But I don't agree with the future weapons-- I am a Ninja purist when it comes to that. Mikeytron 6000 showed that Mike never took to heart that in a ninja's hand, anything is a weapon.
But yeah, the Dark Turtles (had they continued FF) should have found purpose and meaning-- rather along the lines of the Inuishi Gunjin or however it's spelled-- And perhaps they could have found someone to be their Sensei--- OMG-- CODY--

:| ... Leo has got an impressively tiny head, considering his height (about five foot). Me, I really really really am gonna miss the detail of ye olde 2k3 but I think this can work. Certainly better than turtles in Power Ranger chestplates...
The animation and storyboarding had better compensate. I'm nervous because I heard that they WEREN'T staying with DongWoo, because DongWoo is too expensive now. Just as long as the color pallet becomes more subdued, darker and more realistic (I couldn't stand the perpetual fireworks display that was FF and even much of the the older 2k3 -- like season 1) the designs won't look as cheap.
Oh and thanks Goongasnootch.

Confirms right there that the Turtles have pupils. I guess they'll have to explain it somehow...but I'll doubt they'll try. Oh and notice how Leo has his regular swords. Yeah, ditching FF weapons. Which is find by me. As for the way they will look,I really like it alot but I will have to judge how the animation flows to be relieved. It does have a 'New Adventures of Batman' look to it. Actually, 2k3 was not curves. 2k3 was CONTOURS. That's what's different about this design. :( It is devoid of interesting contours, so we lose complexity and uniqueness. Contours define negative spaces and negative spaces help us distinguish characters. Unfortunately, contours cost more money to animate at a decent framerate.

Hmmmm... let me give this a few more minutes to look over.
Well, it's really pointy. Like, FF pointy. But there's something about the face that looks different from FF in a way I like. Without pupils it looks pretty kickawesome. And I do think it's an improvement over Fast Foward, even with all the sharp angles. I think the body proportions are slightly different in a way I like better. That could be movie-style influence; I notice the wrists are thicker. I like that a lot, though the ankles should probably be thicker too, to match.
Probably the weakest part for me are the legs, actually. You get those sharp angles of the muscles and cut to those thinner ankles and it almost looks like the legs are deformed. That's something that will improve when they're in motion, but still.
2k3 is still my favorite 'toon style, but if they get some decent lighting and color scripting going on, this should do OK for itself. And, you know, some good stories. ;)
Haha, Spawn Guy beat me to it, I'd love if they either kept the pupils and went to glowy-eye in the darkness or ninja-mode (think Gargoyles on that one?) or just ditched the pupils entirely. On the other hand, having pupils does make for better acting opportunities in animation.
Still awaiting the quality of animation. My reaction for now is favorable, but reserved. :trazz:

For the longest time, I preferred the Turtles without pupils. Then I watched the new movie and fell a little in love with those designs. I like this new design, I like the pupils (although ... why aren't they brown?). It looks ... really really good. Putrescent, I think it does look similar to FF, but slightly darker. Plus, FF was a step down in quality of character design from 2k3, so people freaked out about it ... if 2k3 had changed to this, people would have freaked, too. But I think this is a slight step up from FF.
I wonder if each Turtle will have a slightly different body shape, like in the movie? I hope they don't make Mike so damn skinny, although Leo looks bulkier than his movie counterpart. If they make Leo tallest (like in the movie) that might confuse the kiddies (who are used to Raph being taller in FF).
Anyway, I can't wait to see the other guys! I wonder if Leo still has his scar ... ?

I hope Leo does NOT have the scar. If it had healed by FF, there is no reason for it to be shown again. In fact, they should have removed it or at least shrank it by "Prodigal Son".
I am not going to complain about sizes. I like the animation, though I wish the faces were rounder and more contoured. But I am not protesting. I cannot wait to see more Turtles on TV.

I'm going to second that. It does look like FF to me. And while the initial designs of the FF characters didn't bug me too much, seeing them even more blockified and angularized in animation form kinda looked worse. To the point I think they were just making sharp angles till the head looked like a more triangular head... almost like putting a mask on this.
I think if they wanted to go for the TMNT 07 movie look, they needed to round out their heads, not make them as angular.
But somehow, this one looks pretty good in the developement stages.
I just hope if Hun comes back his head isn't the size of a peanut and he doesn't have a cat mouth.

Oh like they did in Season 5?*still hasn't seen it* :P
Though from what I've heard, I can see where you're coming from. When I finally watch the episodes I'll see which I think is less cheesy. They did have a decent explanation for the breathers in FF, but I still think they came off looking kinda like Power Rangers.

too many sharp edges, what shape in his shell? square?? Leo's feet look funny, and his head is too small. Eyes or no, I don't care. As long as we can see eyes without their mask I don't care. why do they have to draw their necks like they're a separate piece? it looks like he has a collar, they've always done that tho. If they're trying to add a few movie elements, where the bridge on his shell? You can see his sides like before, in the movies they had bridges. Plastron is too small, looks like it's slapped on there to cover their front and man bits. Muscles are not sharp edged; lookit the shoulders, come on! gimem a break, they should be rounded, the arms smooth and curved with the musculature. I dunno, they're ruining their look. I know this is prelim art, I hope they smooth them out for the finals.

Here, might as well show this around. I fixed some of the basic and obvious proportion issues that were, at least to me, a hang up. It was hard to look around them but with those out of the way, really, I *might* be able to live with it. Oh yeah and I got rid of the pupils too.:D They probably don't appreciate people reworking their art but...um...it's just easier than trying to describe it.

Y'know, I actually really like the new look. It is certainly better than Fast Forward's look, I think. My only concern now is that they get some good stories and villains. I think I'm actually pretty excited about all this. I can't wait to see some more new stuff in the future.
How this differs from the >> design: there are 50% more angles in every bite, plus symmetry has been thrown out the window.

I was thinking the same exact thing and I'm not kidding this is exactly why Fast Forward didn't continue because Mirage does listen to the fans and doesn't do what it wants.

You summed up my thoughts. I think we fans can be a little to critical, to early to pass judment IMO. Storys will be the make or break for me. I know Pete and company can make it work. I like the new Batman cartoon alot, not because of the designs but the stories are great. I also like the 90's version. Just don't dumb it down for the kids.

Hmm...then maybe we should just shut the forum down and not discuss the turtles at all? Because last I knew, they were giving us information, voluntarily. And I don't think they'd do that if they expected we'd just sit mum and ponder. Forgive me for sounding like a smart ass but seriously... I'm here to discuss, toss ideas and share thoughts. No one here is forcing anyone at Mirage to do anything. They call their own shots. I mean, goodness knows they haven't used any of my ideas!

no kidding, I'm getting a bit tired of it as well. I mean damn. I didn't like FF, I didn't like the whole futuristic thing. FF wasn't to my tastes so I want the turtles back in present time New York. From what I have read of the new revamp it is the closest thing to the 2k3 as we are going to get, which makes me happy. Just so long as they get away from the character simplification and get back to developing their characters I'll be happy.
I will agree however that the way the turtles look in the preliminary art sketch looks just about the same as it was in Fast Forward. Except they are back to their normal ninja gear. However It does seem that these turtles will go back to the darker color tones of 2k3 which is probably what alot of people are really pleased about.

Personally I will reserve judgement until I see the finished product but I do want to say this:
When you look at fan works: art, comics and fictions, it is amazingly evident how some incredibly talented people really get the essence of the turtles. Look at the comic Masked Ninja did where Mike ties the dude to the side of a roof, look at Bess Hudson's art and Lucy Too's writing on fanfiction.net.
It really comes to something when the fan works are BETTER and more honest to the original concept than the official works.
That is all I have to say at this time, except that I welcome a Turtles design with pupils. :D

Here's an idea, since your oh so knowledgeable on good cartoon character designs, budgeting, and show business. How about you re-draw how they should look in a way that's cost effective for the new series budget and do a better job then that. While your at it since your such a scholar animate the entire series and write all the episodes.

When they did "The Journal", Casey, April, and Karai (and the Tribunal) looked pretty okay considering. Shredder and the Foot, for that matter, during "Timing is Everything" faired rather well. I hope that they do a good job of merging the style with the movie version-- and this seems to be a fairly good merge of the two styles.

I think people are getting too worked up over comments that aren't lavishing praise. The only "destructive" comments are the ones that just say "that looks stupid" and don't offer any suggestions. And yes, there have been a couple to that effect. But those of us who are saying "good start, but this is how I'd change it" are doing nothing wrong or ungrateful.
People who work in this industry need a thick skin, which is what I've learning in my classes as of late, from my teacher who has worked in several large studios so far in his career. In many studio environments, people aren't afraid to flat-out tell you to your face that your work sucks and needs to be revisited. So unless people are being rude just to be rude, I see no problem, really. I find it more comforting when people don't worry too much about bruising egos over minor things and say what they think. So long as those people have a vague concept of the line between "rude" and "honest," at least.

Most people on here are trying to be constructive. I hae no problem with the designs, and I'm more concerned about plot than anything else. However, those who do have a problem with it have stated exactly what is wrong with the animation instead of just saying, "This totally sucks." Saying something sucks without backing up why is more destructive than offering why you think it's not that good. And as for changing things, we've all felt this way about FF. I certainly have, but that doesn't mean that Pete and Company listen to every single thing we say and change it. They may change it to their liking. Who knows? Maybe Pete like the FF concept at first and decided that it wouldn't work for 2K8. We don't know and probably won't know.

Ah memories! Way back when, when I was in art school--we called it bootcamp-- they would line up our projects on the blackboard anonymously and the teacher would critique them..."anonymously". The problem was, he could recognize my style because I was one of the few who actually entered art school as an artist. So it would be: "This one sucks. This one...you did this right before class - garbage. This one, not worth my time. This one, not seeing the perspective. Bess...You can do better, come on."
OY! I mean, it's hard. Sometimes the teachers seemed rude but they just were being brutally honest and it's really good for you to learn to accept the harsh reality of the real word. When you're an artist, your work is public and some people WILL hate it and they WILL say it. And you have to be able to take that either with a grain of salt or as a learning experience. But if you take it to heart then you're in the wrong business and I'm pretty sure the creators over there at Mirage have it all figured out.
All of us here on this forum are TMNT fans. I don't think anyone here, no matter how negative, is trying to bring the new season down. I think at the very worst, we (those of us that are passionate as it seems I've coined us) don't want to see it ruined and watching the steps used to create this new season, AS IT'S HAPPENING, feels a bit like watching a plane crash...to some.
Myself? I'm still hopeful, holding out for more info and of course, to check out the finished product.
I liked Mystic's comparison piccie. That puts it in perspective. Of course, the 2K3 and FF pics are finished but still, even the FF picture leaves the new one in the dust. And what gets me is, those studies are concept art, not what we saw on the actual show. What we get once it's animated is more simplified. I'm not sure what that means for the already stripped model for the new season but I hope they beef it up a bit before it goes to animation because I don't think it could get much simpler.

I have to say, I don't hate the design, myself. I just think they could just round it out a tiny bit more as far as the head goes. I hope it looks good in animation. That's all I care about as far as character designs go. And on the plus side of things, if they redesign the character, when the inevitable toy line comes out, we just won't have recycled parts from the movie toys or the F F toys.
Personally, I don't want to pass judgement on a series from character designs. I want to wait until more details about the story come out before I say that I do not like it. So far, i think they're going in the direction I wanted to see them go. Something similar to the 2K3 series that we all love while incorporating a couple changes to keep the toy companies and network happy.
Though speaking of the design.... why does everything have to look like a Jeff Mastuza or whatever his name is desing. Even in the original 2k3 desgins there was a little of that.

Jeff Matsuda designed the humans for the new TMNT movie. Since we know they're trying to bridge the 2k3 and movie styles it isn't a big surprise for everything to take on a Jeff Matsuda appearance -- even though the design for the turtles themselves was more Kevin Munroe's doing.
Seriously, I don't notice anyone actually "judging" the series saying it's gonna be awful based on some preliminary character design. I for one think there's enough reason to think it should be as decent as FF was in its later run (which was actually quite good -- I liked it so much better than season five, which I am not ashamed to denounce as thoughtless and irrelevant wrt the rest of the 2k3 series).

I know! That angered me too, but that was 4Kid's move not Mirage's. 4Kids used FF as a new direction and turned it into something it wasn't supposed to be. FF was going to be just like 2K3, another season where their in the future taking place after season 5. But 4Kids saw the ratings slipping on season 4, spazzed out and they pushed FF to come out sooner.
Might have saved the series who knows, in my opinion they could have aired any season when the movie was coming out and it'd have good ratings, but FF did well on it's own even without the movie hype.
