Sales were down as a whole from last month. It looks like the Nick comic is back to similar sales as the previous series, so the relaunch only temporarily boosted sales.
If the comic isn't reaching its intended audience (kids watching the cartoon), then maybe its for the best that Nick animated comes to an end. I'd rather IDW use their manpower for 3 comics in the IDW universe (the ongoing, and two different micros/mini's) then instead.

I would assume an increase in sales, but it may also have to do with the market they need yo reach or a hesitation to dilute the main series.
Will be interesting to see what they do.

20k for the main ongoing is great sales. This series has been sticking 14-16 forever, and I think it probably averages that. So to see a few 20k+ in recent months is cool.
Yeah the nick comic is cool I guess, because it is fun for kids, but if it in any way hampers the main one... cut it.

it's a good feeling to know that the IDW TMNT main comic series is selling well.
i decided early on that no matter what they put out for new issues of Ninja Turtles i'd pick it up.
the ones based on the cartoon series are amusing enough, but the ongoing series is pretty much my favorite new comic month after month.

Man, looking at those sales it really makes you realize how much DC comics sell compared to IDW comics. I wonder if DC ever got the rights to publish a TMNT comic how much it would sell (without any crossovers), but I suppose we'll never know.
Also keep in mind the first Batman crossover came with like a gazillion alternate covers so that obviously drove up sales.
The Nick comic looks like it may almost be on its last legs. Bobby confirmed we're getting at least 12 issues of it, I wonder if that will be the end.

I'm assuming it totally is. Honestly, the Nick comic has never really done anything to justify its existence. It tells mostly forgettable stories that leave little impact on the overall Nick canon, and has never broken away to do its own thing like Archie TMNT did.

#1. You yourself don't really read comics, so I don't think you're in much of a position to authoritatively say who's reading comics.
#2. Kids read plenty of comics, usually even comics above their "age rating." There's a reason comics are in the "teen" or "YA" section at all of the libraries in my area.
I think what's killing the Nick comic is any kids who WOULD read it would rather read Batman or Iron Man, where stuff actually happens and storylines go on for 4 to 6 months at a time. However, that's all 100% my own theory which could quite likely be bogus. :tread:

So is the Nick comic pretty much done at this point? You know when TMNT Universe was announced I assumed that would be "replacing" the Nick comic...unless IDW really is going to continually put out 3 new TMNT comics every month.
Apparently the Nick comic is going on to issue 12 at least, which would finish the last trade when they're collected. I wonder if it'll go on past that.

Yeah, the Nick tie-in books always seemed kind of pointless, so it's a big loss if AA really has been cancelled. Still, that would mean every nick tie-in IDW made can be collected in three omnibuses, if anyone is interested in collecting them.

I really wish they had revamped Amazing Adventures a little more from its previous incarnation New Animated Adventures. This title could really benefit from some longer storyarcs with a bit more narrative oomph. Kiddos could handle it, maybe even prefer it, and it would draw more adults in too. I have a feeling Nickelodeon is a lot more picky about its direction than the main IDW series though.

Probably. I assume they wanted no majorly conflicting storylines with what was happening in the cartoon too, which is why most of the Nick comics have been one-shot or "filler" short stories.
With the original Nick run of 24 issues and this one going up to at least 12 issues, they made 36 issues total which is pretty lengthy for a kids comic. Plus there's that basketball crossover issue too.

New #1's tend to sell very well, so I imagine TMNT Universe #1 to be anywhere from 19,000-22,000. After that I imagine regular sales will be more around 15,000-16,000 or so.
I just hope sales remain good enough for us to get at least 2-3 years out of the book. We definitely need a companion book for the secondary characters to get more screentime.

In this case it may have actually helped casual fans. I imagine for someone just getting into a comic that it's hard to remember to come in just once a month (often not the same week of the month) for 3 or 4 months to just finish one story arc. Whereas in this case they could get it all the same day every week, much easier to stay on top of, and even if they started partway through its likely some of the previous issues would still be in stock since it had only been weeks rather than months.
I think this would be a very good model for IDW to move forward with in regard to mini series. Obviously the limiting factor is the artists turnaround time, and I think B&R got away with the weekly release due to the huge number of artists on the project. But even for minis with one artist I wouldn't mind waiting til all art was in and doing it weekly. It would likely mean longer waits between minis but that's fine with me if it brings more readers in. Heck, if there's enough readers they could afford to plot EVEN MORE minis, and fill the gaps in those long waits!

You might be onto something big there! And I'll confess that visiting my local comic shop last month it was impossible to ignore the big wall filled with colorful issues of Bebop & Rocksteady. That's an old sales trick used by toy and video game companies to dominate visual space on a retailer's limited storage shelves. Hence, toy companies create humongous boxed playsets that may not sell for a while but ensure that it will get people's attention and create less room for competitor products. Nintendo did that with their early runs of NES sets too. Sounds like it really paid off in the case of this IDW mini-series!

As said, a 5 issue monthly only works with recognizable characters like Bebop/Rocksteady to casuals. I severely doubt a, "Koya and Bludgeon" 5 issue mini would sell anywhere as well, for example, because outside of IDW readers they're obscure characters.
They could probably do it with a Leatherhead mini though, and he needs more screentime in IDW since he was just introduced.

I haven't seen the sale figures for the TMNT ongoing for a couple of years now.
Really pleased it is still selling like it was :D
I enjoyed for once going into my comic shop every week knowing that I had a comic. I would also welcome something like this again. Even if it was only an annual occurence.:tgrin:

Poorly as their non-Bat books were selling before Rebirth, I think they'd be pleased to straight up steal the license from IDW.
TMNT published by DC? Gives me mixed feelings with emphasis on excited and worried. haha

So what do you guys think it would take for TMNT to be a 30-50K monthly sales book? It's reviewed positively everywhere, has pretty consistent art (especially when Mateus is doing his thing), the writing has been steadily good, and has shows and movies based on the characters. Not the EXACT characters in terms of characterization and look, but y'all know what I mean. Besides those points, the Turtles are pop culture icons.
They float between 16K and 20K regularly and that's good, but could they be doing better? I understand IDW isn't one of the Big 2, but is that the only reason? They're not on a large publisher so they won't do big numbers? Have comic book readers gotten over the Turtles or what? Am I missing something? :tconfuse:

Its IDW's best selling book. IDW comics don't sell as much as DC/Marvel because they're an indie comic publisher.
There's really nothing else they can do. The series has been around 5 years now and its just word of mouth and consistent fans like us who support the book.

Walking Dead is the only book that does numbers like that outside of the big two. Power Rangers (wtf?) is currently in the top 100, but it's early. Won't stay there.
I don't know what Viacom's licensing fees are like compared to everyone else IDW does business with, but being the #1 book and all has to mean it's selling just fine.

Honestly I think it would take two things
The IDW Comic art would need to revert back to Dan Duncan style art instead of the child like pre-adolescent baby faces.
Second it would need a very successful movie franchise along the lines of Nolan Batman or Marvel Movie franchise to Garner more attention.
TMNT was originally a darker comic than what we have now.
and also the only thing most people know about TMNT is that they had an awesome TV shows in the 90s that is for kids and only kids.
Hell I did not know how awesome and serious the original Mirage comics were until I stumbled across the old TMNT website and think thats the problem is TMNT needs to bring the Darker more Serious TMNT to Main Stream media.

I don't think the art will help comic sales. Especially by reverting back to Duncan's art; that will do nothing. Also, Santolouco is nailing it with his style, his version of the turtles, and most of all with his action sequences. It's just a matter of time until DC or Marvel snatch him up, which will be a sad day. The baby faces are gone and were really only on the cover of the FCBD issue. (I don't want to get into this because this topic should probably be in a different thread)
As for the movie, I agree. IMO, both movies were all around disappointments and probably hurt the entire franchise more than anything. For starts, a quality director would have been nice on the first movie.
To fix comic sales, I think it starts with the comic shops. Every comic shop I walk into the turtle books are always in the back. If I ask anybody working the shop about them (like if they are any good or if you would recommend it) they typically say they don't know because they haven't read any. I feel like most shops are only familiar with what Marvel and DC are doing in their current story lines. Most shops probably have no clue the turtle books have had good reviews either. Lastly, rarely do I ever see any turtle sub or incentive variants in the front displays that seem to exclusively have Marvel and DC variants only.

I have to disagree mainstream comic book reader don't like the pre-adolescent faces the turtles have been getting lately. most people associate the turtles with the 87 show and unfortunately the way the turtles have been drawn the late several issues re-inforces this stereo type.
I love Santouloco's art style especially in city of falls, but unfortunately he has started drawing the faces like the Nick counter parts

If they sell out so fast, then why are they not increasing their TMNT order? Saturday is a huge day for people to go to a comic shop. In general, if someone roaming through comic shop after Friday then he or she will never find any TMNT comics to flip through and decide to buy or not. This is sad. This is preventing possible new readers to the franchise.
Another point, do the Batman or Spider-Man comics sell out as fast? Probably not. You can go to any comic shop and always find say a Batman comic for instance. The same should be for TMNT comics. There should at least be enough to get the shop to the next month's release or close to it.

The comics are a joke too. I hope they stop doing that, and focus greatly on TMNT ongoing, and the what I hope is a Tales 2.0 kinda thing with TMNT Universe.

Yeah, it forced me to create a pull list, but to answer the larger question, they were ordering 10 copies of the book. That's it. They'd take 50 of any DC/Marvel title, but typically 10 of TMNT.
When i added it to my list, they started ordering 11.

Damn, 34,000+ for TMNT universe #1 is insane. That's around the same the first issue did back in 2011.
It'll of course drop as time goes on and probably go around where the main ongoing is, but its an impressive start. Overall between the two main IDW TMNT books, TMNT looks to have quite a healthy lifespan ahead of it yet.

Yeah pretty damn good for a side series, but it is a 1# issue.
I think TMNT universe will have a healthy life span especially with the artist and writer being used. The art style seems to be more appealing and more mainstream.

TMNT is IDW's best selling book. You look at Transformers which only sells in the 10,000's and a lot of their other properties a lot less, so I don't think its anything to be concerned about.
Universe dipping down to only 13,000 when its only in its 4th issue is a bit more concerning, my guess is the $5 price tag is a bit too much.

I really wish the price would drop a dollar on TMNT Universe. If they wanna keep doing the strips and require the extra cost, then maybe just save 'em for a stand-alone special issue. At some point, I'm probably gonna stop buying the series monthly and just wait for the TPBs.

If sales decline continually they'll probably drop the back-ups. The first issue of Universe sold 34,000+ copies while Universe #4 only sold 13,000+ copies.
And yes, I know the first issue was inflated due to all the variant covers and such, but it depends on how sales go for the next couple of issues. I hope Universe lasts a long time because all these other writers do a fantastic job with the series and the main ongoing gets too cramped with storylines and characters, that its' nice to have a companion series with more breathing room.

The things that disinterested me in IDW (1-5,13/14, HoTFC and Infestation, 2nd Annual) all had the Mirage feel that I cant get into. The backup has the same vibe. No offense to those who like it. I totally get what you mean, I can't get into the Mirage feel either. It's the main reason why I haven't started reading the original comics. I do know enough about them to get stoked whenever the Nick cartoon pulls off a direct homage, but the comics outside of Archie and IDW just aren't for me.
SHotFC, however, is (IMHO at least) a great story and definitely the moment when IDW TMNT started growing the beard, as TV Tropes would put it. I'd been following along out of curiosity but that was the moment that hooked me for good.
The issues you mentioned from the ongoing are fine in the context of things, but I will agree on Infestation and the Annual(s) even more so. Eastman and Laird's style seems terribly outdated and trying-too-hard-y to me. It probably wouldn't have hooked me if I were old enough to read the Mirage comics back in the 80's, either. Here's hoping future backup stories in Universe will get better, feature different talent, and especially focus on other characters outside the Turtles, all with that IDW feel we've grown accustomed to.

Infestation was written by Tristan Jones, it didn't feel Mirage to me, although with some slight tweaks it did feel like it could have been a Tales of the TMNT issue.
Secret History of the Foot Clan is great and still to this day one of my favorite IDW arcs. The annuals were poor though and feel out of place in the IDW universe in terms of writing style.

The ancient Japanese violence and reincarnation bits in the flashback was a turnoff to me. I did like the current time story however in SHoTFC. I read through 1-5 to give it a second chance and it was the tone a darker murderous, struggle to survive instead of the characterization, cool characters, diverse story types. It was like Frank Miller vs Denny O'Neil. I am a Denny O'Neil guy. The same with #13/14. It was Splinter teaching Raphael the no-kill rule with Arnold Sr.,( before morphing back to Hun). It had a similar unappealing vibe that the first five issues did. The first Annual actually held my interest, mainly because it was the one thing that expanded on the Savate ninja. The second one, I don't know what it was about aside from a Battle Nexus tease that got us nowhere. I have tried hard to like everything, but its the Mirage feel that is captured in all of the above which just turns me off. Its cool, as there are those fans. I am just glad its not the overall feel.

I could see #100 reaching the 20k mark, and hopefully it will. It's the first time any run of TMNT will have reached a 100th issue, not to mention the amount of hype that in-universe events will quite likely be generating by then. We're only a couple of years away!

Yeah I was thinking the other day about how #100 will be such a milestone. That issue should be epic and have lots of things unfolding and should almost be a TPB size. It should be more than a 8.00 one.
I guess it should be like 3 issues, and price it at like 11 or 12. Probably 11.99.
We're a ways off, but what a great accomplishment that would be. So many fairweather casuals now days... first 4-6 issues do well and then sales slide downward until cancellation.

Ongoing is 5+ years in and is still doing over 14k copies. Which is great. Any chance we'll get up up to the 20k mark? I know they made a good amount of change fromt he #50 spike. That alone will float them a couple years maybe, since it was a 8.00 issue.
Does not compute.

The ongoing and Universe are far and away IDWs best selling ongoing titles. The only thing they have selling better is Batman/TMNT Adventures and Star Trek/GL. Both are 6 issue minis and crossovers with popular DC characters.

I doubt it's better than early Mirage, or Archie. Mirage likely started sagging in sales after Return to New York, but I have no numbers. Archie TMNT sold like hotcakes released in the height of Turtlemania.

14,000 is pretty low for the ongoing, usually hovers around 16,000-18,000 or so. TMNT Universe also has the pricey $5 tag, so it's a bit more expensive for casual buyers who aren't hardcore TMNT fans.
Thats not true issue #43 sold for 14.5 units, so that is definitely not true.
Comic Book Sales have a natural roller coaster with sales just like its stories.
The main ongoing series saw spikes in sale with Issues #44 ("Donatello's death") and #50 (Shredder's Death)
So the lowest sale right now are bc the story is just at a low/dull point right now. Sales will have another swing here eventually.

I'd imagine it's cuz the physical copies sold are counted by how many copies are ordered by shops from distributors, but you can't really measure digital sales the same way. So while it is a large chunk of sales, it's much harder to report the same way as physical copies

Yeah I didn't include the IDW/Batman kids thing. It's cool, I haven't read it yet, but I'm sure DC takes home a 60% to 70% of the lion's share in that anyways. Still great for IDW/TMNT though.
Yeah that is interesting about the digital sales. I don't think there's a great slant towards people buying digital. I'll never buy digital, no way in hell.
I know people are going digital with comics but I don't think it is that heavy of a trend. I mean honestly... if you had to choose to buy a comic you like physically (the way it was meant to be) or digitally on your suckpad, what would you do?
I don't think most people would be into the digital over physical because of "preference", just maybe out of "conveinence."
ANyways, I would tack on 2-3k sales maybe for digital. Who knows what they are. I don't think the physical is slipping because more people are converting to digital though. Just as long as the ongoing stays 10k+ physical we're great to go.

It's super easy to quantify and report, but the numbers are apples and oranges. The physical sales are taken at a specific date, really prior to the release. Conversely digital is really only available release date and after, and not everyone buys the books the day they come out. So it's not the same number and harder to delineate the numbers. Is it sales release week? Release month? Do you update the sales every time one sells from now till forever? Since there's not a finite pool of digital copies like there is with physical lumping them in with physical sales wouldn't be accurate.
MikeandRaph87

I think that is would be really cool to have a separate digital sales chart. As much as I hate digital comics, it would be interesting to see what's going on.
I don't think any comic pushes more than 5k digital downloads? Anything more than that seems nuts.
Like does Batman or whatever is #1 ... are they pushing 30k digital sales? I highly doubt it.
CyberCubed
03-03-2017, 11:25 AM
I think the thing is digital comics remain up on their store to buy forever. Physical copies of comics are only printed in limited numbers and then they don't send any more off to the comic stores. So it's easier for them to keep track of how many physical copies are sold.
I mean people can right now buy digital IDW comics that came out way back in 2011-2012, should those be added to the overall sales of those individual issues even though they're 4 years old now?
RaphaelsIsolation

Hey so I found these stats for Physical Comic Sales vs Digital.
So in 2014 for every 9.4 physical comic 1 digital comic was sold.
So 9.4=1 ratio
So TMNT sells 14k physical they roughly sold they sold 1,489 digital.
so 15,489 overal

also the ratio is for North America only.

So how did 68 do?
This is maybe a dumb question but I don't know how things work. Is the number sold based on how many the retailers and comic book stores buy, or based on the number customers buy from them?
In terms of supporting the series, is it better to buy individual issues or TPBs?
Just want to help keep it going to 100! They will need this many more issues at least to catch up with all the characters.

It's based on how many copies the retailers buy. But they don't really order many more than they need to, so it's accurate enough.

Well the specials/micros always sold less than the ongoing. My guess is casuals don't feel the need to pick up the extra books outside the mains series, even though it's all in continuity and they have several important plot points the main series doesn't cover.
I mean you have to look at it outside the mindset of a hardcore TMNT fan. These people probably pick up dozens of other comics from DC and Marvel a month, and they probably feel buying an extra TMNT book isn't worth it over a new DC/Marvel comic.

Yeah I could see that. The big two do have that name recognition thing going on for them, and seem to always have buzz. So I could see in a pick and choose situation D.C./Marvel getting the sale over an "indie." Even if there are good reasons to not pick the D.C./Marvel book. Like plot points you mentioned.

It seems weird if you go by the standards of DC and Marvel - DC gives series more time to find a level, but Marvel will cut you off at five issues if pre-orders aren't what they want - but these are smaller companies. I'm just guessing, but I imagine there is a lot less immediate investment and overhead going on there which gives them a lot more leeway.

We don't get digital sales numbers - they're kept close to the vest for some reason - but it's been suggested from time to time by vague statements from different companies that they're generally not enough to boost flagging or low sales, so I don't think about them much in regards to this sort of thing.

I'm somewhat of a casual fan when it comes to TMNTU. Last one I picked up was #11 and it's still waiting to be read.
Off the top of my head I think I have picked up issues 1,2,5,6,7,8,11. What has stopped me from preordering is a combination of multi issue arcs such as #12 being 1 of 4. And the art style. That's what really turned me off from 9&10 was the look combined with the multiple issues. The most memorable to me for art/story has been 5,6,7,8.
Aren't 12-15 basically a Karai mini-series? I like the one and done issues. Keep the multi-parters for the ongoing and the various mini series releases and do something with the art and I'm tempted to be a preorder TMNTU ever issue guy.

I'm curious if Universe will make it to say issue #30? Also wonder if/when Universe with see a leveling of sales, I mean it's consistently dropped. A steady average with the occasional up would be good but the dropping every issue is concerning.
And...so #72 looks to have added around 107 more than #71. I am a little surprised that an issue advertised as a part 2 of 2 added numbers. But that's good. :)

I would be interested in knowing if each individual comic has to pull it's own weight to keep from being cancelled. Or if a mildly successful book could piggyback on a more successful book. As long as a certain overall profit margin is happening within the franchise. I wonder how low sales would need to be before losing money? I think IDW has the imaginary line drawn but keeps it private, understandably. But if Robotanimals is any guideline than it seems 5,000 in sales is still acceptable. Who wouldn't love to sell five thousand of a book. It's 5000 more sales in a month you wouldn't normally have.

I agree. As long as the main sells well just keep going with it.
You're not telling me they don't make a tidy sum on selling 9000 units!

This post also had me remember the tpb and hc side of the industry. Lots of the original work is already completed. That most likely bumps profit margins and helps with the single issues continuing.

When it is initially released yes. But you can usually get killer deals down the line if your patient. LCS usually don't have deals even on back issues, but Comixology has deals regularly on comics.

I find tmnt universe to be a really hard sell. A lot of the side-characters aren't compelling enough to warrant these multi-part stories, in my opinion.
I'd go for more one-and-done's, issues featuring the turtles, or issues using fan favorite(Mirage) creators.

I like how universe fills in plot threads that we don't have time for in the ongoing and shows us characters we haven't seen in a while like they're doing with Karai right now, who hasn't appeared since issue 50 in the main series.
But I can see how casuals might think otherwise, hence the lower sales. Oh well.

Sales do seem to be declining each month but as long as TMNT is one of IDW's best selling properties it doesn't matter.
Next year when IDW launches their new Sonic the hedgehog comic I expect that to be their best selling comic at least for a little while.

I don't know. Ducktales #1 launched with the arrival of a new show and is only number four. Star Wars Adventures is number one and two. TMNT is consistently among the top for IDW. Sonic will have tough competition.

So issue 95-99 will probably sell about 23-24k and 100 will shoot up to 30k

Thanks. If it does have to end prematurely, I hope it's capped off with a nice round number. At least make it past #24, and hopefully up to #30. It'll be a shame if we have to see the title go some day, though. There's still plenty of untapped potential and stories to be told.

especially when they go into the editor's thread talking about what they'd like to see in the series. or how they'd love it if the Mutanimals would get their own standalone comic.

Thank you, I even think I'm a little overboard on it. I am nuts about variant covers but I think for readability I may go with those big hardcovers they have. I don't think Comixology lets you sort the micro series in with the numbered issues as well as universe and cross overs etc.? I have no experience with digital comic services. Any how I love the work the people who put all their time into making this series happen and I am glad to pay for it each month and I hope it continues for as long as possible. If we come to a point though where the story is rebooted then I am probably out the door ha ha. I don't care if they have to renumber it to get the general audience back but please don't have us go through another re-telling of the first time the Turtles encountered Shredder, Stock man, Leather-head etc.

the Hardcovers really are nice and the larger size lets you enjoy the art more. the only downside the them is that they do not contain all of the variant covers like the trade paperbacks do. so i collect the TPB as well.
no, unfortunately comixology does not follow the chronological reading order of ongoing/mini-series/etc…
what i do is keep a word document of the reading order handy, and manually open and read each issue in sequence. i used to like to read the physical comic first and then read it a second time in digital. but the ‘guided view’ on comixology has spoiled me. :P
oh! i really hope they never renumber the series!
the way this series is very held to continuity, all renumbering it would do is confuse and drive away new readers.
imagine telling someone how we see Hamato Yoshi’s origin with the foot clan in issue #5, they go and up the renumbered comic. they'd be completely lost.
best thing they can do to attract new readers is stunts like the Batman cross-over. maybe even the Injustice cameo?

You know, I think that the free sampler they give out every year or so is a great primer for new people to jump into, but my LCS and apparently many to most LCS's did not know about TMNT or why it was a thing. I am glad we are doing stuff like TMNT/Ghostbusters and Batman and Injustice and I am sure once IDW gets their feet on the ground with Sonic he will end up meeting the turtles as well.
As for universe, forgive me if I already said my piece on it but I think that with all the characters running around in TMNT we could have never managed with just one monthly book. The micros were ok but I think it's better to have a solid numbering system so universe has that going for it but I think the problems it has kind of has to do with how it manages the order of content. If the main line of comics is doing 4-5 issue story arcs then I think universe should try and keep to 1-2 issue stories, 3 at the most. I know you got to write for the trade but we can't ever have another 4 issue April & Casey again, even people like me who put a large amount of their spending money into this series are struggling to deal with that. I'm not the editor I don't know all the numbers but there's got to be a balance. The next Universe story looks great and i think people are going to like it because it has the turtles staring in it but we still have a lot of other characters that need time. I guess the best way to handle it was like back in 34-36 where we had 1/2 turtles with a few side characters. That's how Universe should work.

yeah i wish that the Free sampler had better distribution. my LCS didn’t even get it.
i believe IDW has given away free copies of issue #1 in the past, as well as selling the greatest hits copy of it for $1.
that’s always a good way to hook new readers.
i agree about the necessity of Tmnt Universe. and as much as i love having the back-up stories (most of the time)
there are times i’d rather the back-up occasionally be sacrificed, unless there is a story that really needs to be told like ‘Inside Out’ or ‘what is ninja?’
i also do like the flexibility of being able to see 2 to 3 or even 4 issue supporting arcs in Universe. yeah Casey & April was definitely a story that could have been told in a single issue i think. i almost feel like Tmnt Universe #11 felt like another filler story that didn’t really do much for the series overall. i’m actually really happy the Turtles will be more of focus in the upcoming Universe arc.
i love the series. but i just wish the Turtles were more front and center.

Been a while since I was checking this board or sales numbers. Life gets in the way.
But doing a quick Find by IDW, it looks like the main TMNT book is their third best-selling overall; the second-best ongoing below Star Wars Adventurers (the Ghostbusters crossover #1 beat the ongoing by about 500). TMNU is #12 for IDW overall, but if you don't count the TMNT/GB crossover, it comes in #7 for IDW's ongoings by my count. (I'm assuming Star Trek Discovery and Sword of Ages are ongoings? They're both at #1 this month, which explains why they sold so well.)
Far as I can tell, the TMNT secondary book beat the My Little Pony and Transformer secondary books. If you look at where TMNTU stands in IDW's rankings, it's doing fairly well, at least by this list. And the TMNT ongoing continues to be one of IDW's top performers month to month.
...How did I miss that IDW publishes Star Wars Adventures? I've been buying those for my nieces. No surprise to see that one selling gangbusters.

I guess if sales dip to 5,000 or less monthly, it's probably a sign they'll either re-tool it or replace it with separate mini's/specials like they used to. Or more 5 issue a month specials like Dimension X or Bebop/Rocksteady.

And yet the Star Wars books barely sell better...
You mean IDW's Star Wars releases?
Becuase the main Star Wars comics by Marvel sold this:
Star Wars #41 56,545
Star Wars #42 53,710
The Star Wars comics sell over 50,000 copies most issues, nearly 5 times the amount as an IDW TMNT book.

I wonder what they could do to get sales up.
Obviously the first things that come to mind are "Big 2" tactics like relaunch with a #1 or start hyping up a line-wide event focused on TMNT, with heavy marketing.
Not saying it's the way to go, just speculating.

"Yes, of course I'm comparing the Star Wars titles published by one of the big two to one published by a smaller publisher".
No, of course not. It's the kiddy stuff by IDW, I compared those to TMNT as they have the same publisher.

It would be interesting to know how much money was spent on marketing costs and creative costs and whatever else. Does 5X more sales translate to 5X the profit?

I think a lack of marketing is a big problem for this book's sales

That's what happens I guess when the TMNT become background characters in their own comic.
this is exactly how i feel too!
when i buy a comic with 'Ninja Turtles' in the title, i expect to read a story about the Turtles.
not just have them show up for maybe 3 or 4 pages as a bunch of ineffectual bystanders.

It's only been like that in the few recent Triceraton issues, but I suspect they'll have a bigger role in parts 4 and 5.

i feel like it's been a slow progression of the Turtles becoming more and more of just bystanders in their own series.
#67-70 they were pretty much ineffectual though the entire arc, with the exception of #70.
#71 they sit out the entire issue, save the very last page.
#72 the turtles are pretty much just running away and/or getting slapped around.
#73-74 are extremely exposition heavy build-up issues. the turtles spend most of those issues either talking, or listening to other characters talk.
issue #75 was very disjointed and very jarring.
i did NOT like the opening art. it lacked the visual story-telling it needed to convey the grand scale of battle, both the space scene and even more-so in the ground assault. it just looked very stagnant and unexciting.
Mateus Santolouco's pages were dynamic and exciting to look at.
but then it goes back and forth between dynamic art, then cartoony art.
90% of the second half of issue is all deliberation and courtroom dialog.
it's very painful trying to re-read issue #75.
and now #76, 77 & 78 the turtles are barely even in the comic.
when they do show up they really don't so much for the plot.
Tmnt: Universe is just a whole other can of worms.
there was a time when i could strongly recommend this series to anyone.
over the last year or so not so much.
it's really sad because i used to really look forward to picking up the new Tmnt issue each month. as time goes on i get less and less excited.
