Re: Spinning Sais
If Kurt Hummel can spin sais, then I'm sure Raph can as well: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DZl1QBOW5X0 Re: Episodes I enjoyed the first two episodes. My least favourite part was Snake/Stinkweed, but that's mainly because I prefer the more "humanoid" mutants and I didn't really get the appeal of a giant plant monster. The turtles were all great. Their characters were pretty clearly established and they all had an opportunity to enjoy the "spotlight". And Splinter was also likeable, although I'm hoping his character will be expanded upon over the course of the season, presumably in this relationship with April. All the rest, including The Kraang, April and Shredder obviously need more time to be properly introduced and to have their characters established. The story was pretty much what I expect from a pilot/premier episode. I did like the balance between drama, humour and action. Sure, there were some childish aspects, but they also didn't shy away from the darker stuff like Spinter's family (apparently) going up in flames. The loss of April's father was glossed over a little. Even if the cops didn't believe April's story (which if they'd searched the facility, surely she would have some credibility given the strange technology, prison cells, etc), I'm surprised that her aunt wasn't more concerned. I'm sure it's something that will be touched upon in future episodes, but the casual dismissing of his kidnapping by all the characters was a little odd. I'm looking forward to watching a new episode next week! |

Alrighty, I've finally seen it and gotten my thoughts organized..
What A beautiful view of Manhattan at Night... I love the backdrops of the city skyline, and the gradual descent down to the street level and eventually to deep underground. They remind me so much of the views in the 2K3 show and the comics. I could absolutely see the opening picture as a fantastic desktop image. The training scene is fantastic. The background music with the drumbeats was very good - I do hope they'll be making the background music available online. I could imagine a lot of martial arts demonstrators using that music... The detail in the turtles movements are so intricate, whether if it's Raphael's slow-motion sai grapple-and-toss with Leo, or just the simple simple facial twitches, fluttering bandanas or just breathing. Oh, and let's not forget the way their eyes go white when they go into battle. Some people had complaints about the CGI quality, but... the movements are fluid, like Donatello's helicopter moves when he's using his bo - especially effective for showing just how Fast he's going. The boys are not slow or easy on each other by any means. And remember, as the animators get accustomed to the characters, the quality will improve over the course of the season. Just like the 2K3 show... The banter between Raphael and Donatello is a lot of fun - more so than I could ever have expected. We get Leo/Raph bickering all the time, but Don vs Raph... this is a new treat. And I definitely laughed when Raphael used Don's shell as a drum.. Splinter... damn, I like his design. Sure, the coloring's a lil weird, but a tall, not decrepit Splinter was a number one on my wishlist for this show. And between his personal history and how he deals with the boys now... Just the scene of them pleading with him to go to the surface, and then his 'yes... and no' talk. I love how Don tries to twist Splinter's logic to get him to let them go. The "don't forget this... yes sensei.... and don't forget to hide... yes sensei.... don't talk to strangers.... yes sensei... and don't use the bathrooms up there....uh..yes, sensei?" You can see that he really wants to protect them, unlike what happened with his first family in Japan. Splinter's story is quite tragic in this version of the turtles. This could rate up there with 2K3 Splinter. Especially with his over-protectiveness, And his slightly warped sense of humor (still love the vulcan neck poke in the opening scene with the evil laugh). The whole algae and worms diet amuses me. How the heck do you raise healthy young teenage boys (who typically eat you out of house and home), on a diet of sewer tunnel scrapings? The boys don't look very thrilled with it either... I love hearing the origin story, just as much as Mike, it seems.. I really like the use of the 2-D animation for the flashbacks. Sure, there's no Chet, but they were Splinter's little turtles. He'd already chosen them for himself... already 'adopted', one could theorize. I'll leave that for the over-analyzers to chew on... The mutation looked horribly painful for Splinter. But the boys mutated into cute little toddler turtles... The boys' first night out in the world - reminds me of the Amish tradition of young adults leaving the community to live out in the world on their own for a year. Major milestone in their lives... everything is amazing to them. Neon lights, computers, graffiti, even homeless bums. It's all so jaw-dropping to them. That's why I love the whole scene with the pizza. The exploding brain clip is hilarious and true - Pizza is Heavenly food. The Kraang... I hate their rambling. They remind me of the agents in the Matrix, or the Watchers from Fringe... heck, the robots look like something from Terminator. But they seriously need some language lessons. The boys really struggled to fight them, hitting each other and blocking each other's strikes. Leaves plenty of room for growth... But seeing Mike slash the heck out of his face surprised me. Even though it Was just a robot... I think the scene of Mike getting slapped by Leo would be a good meme for certain trollish situations here on the forums... Donatello's Puppy Love - Seems a little rushed at this point, but people do act irrationally when they fall in love. I was kinda surprised how much background they gave us on their mutation, not to mention Splinter's human past, all in the first two episodes. I thought they would have allowed for a slower pace for story development.. Snake and his mutated form - pretty gruesome thing he turns into. Part weed, part praying mantis, it looks like. His heart's on the outside of his throat, you can see his leg bones... the music from his regeneration back to life is quite beautiful... especially the organ-ish music when April is at her Aunt's place. I know there was a soundtrack made available for the Legend of Korra, maybe we can push for one of TMNT. The newscaster's name is awesome. 'Nuff said.. Shredder looks like one evil sonuva... Oddly enough, just the little bit we can see of his face and head, he reminds me of Oroku Saki from the Dawn of the Turtle fan comic... This was a fantastic premiere to a new show of Turtles. It really showed how dedicated the cast and crew were to create this. We're gonna have many weeks of great discussions in the near future, and I can't Wait to get started... ~ Machias |

After getting the chance to watch the second half on Nick's site, I must say I love that Nick went with the Turtles' eyes going white when in "serious/battle mode".
Seems like they really did look to us for suggestions! I like Saki being rich, powerful and having a skyscraper again, but I'm still curious to learn who the Mirage-looking Shredder is (past Saki in flashback or an Elite)? Hopefully that'll be a Shredder action figure variant down the line.

I like how Snakeweed's original name was also said. Leonardo called him, "Stinkweed" as an insult to get him to move closer to the generator.

Which is why I found it so interesting that they actually name-dropped, "Stinkweed" in the episode, even if it was used as an insult from Leo. |

Not trying to be mean, but it was terrible.
I could be wrong. Only time I ever read it named Stinkweed was on a site at the same time everyone else called him Snakeweed, so I assume it misinformation.

Sigh. Okay, here's my two cents. Again, this is just my own opinions. Maybe it rings true with a few others, maybe it doesn't. I'm not pointing fingers at anyone either way. Just my own experience while watching....
First off, I'm 32 years old. My first experience with anything TMNT was the old Fred Wolf toon series. I bled green as a kid as I literally read, watched, and collected anything TMNT related. I'm not going to sit here and compare the two since this is a new incarnation for a new generation and it's apples and oranges. As an adult now in my early 30's, I think my expectations are just out of whack. I don't know why I thought this show might be something I could really get into. I just plain was disappointed. I even caught myself drifting in thought a few times. I know the new generation won't recognize the voices of the TMNT characters like we older folks will but I just couldn't get past hearing Raphael's voice by Paulsen coming out of Donatello's mouth. It just kept throwing me off the whole show. I also went from kinda disliking Don's gap tooth to really hating it by the end of the episode. I know the humor is targeted for a different audience than me. I know it is. I guess again my expectations were just off. The only time I actually laughed was when Splinter quickly picked Leo as the leader. Other than that, I just didn't find anything really that funny. The character designs were fine I guess although I couldn't stand the new look for Splinter. I down right hate it. He looks too much like a rat now and real rats aren't a thing of beauty. Raphael was the only character I enjoyed and thought might have some interesting stories in the future. I can't emphasize enough how important having good, UNKNOWN voice actors are for any new series. I always enjoyed Leo the most out of every incarnation. I was hoping his voice would match those kinda strong leadership qualities. I kept thinking about American Pie every time he spoke. I just don't think Jason Biggs was a good choice. Mike I could take it leave it as I just didn't have any strong feelings either way. The good you ask? I enjoyed the comic style frames during the flashback scenes. I wish they could have made an entire series in this fashion but it wouldn't fly so wishful thinking on my part. I also hate the little details of how Japanese anime worked itself into the show via the silly expression like bubbles next to their heads at time when they showed emotion. I kept thinking of Hello Kitty for some reason. I know this new generation enjoys that but I guess I'm just showing my age. My favorite incarnation of the cartoon is still the first season (and only the first season) of the Fred Wolf series. I rewatched it for the first time in 15 years just a few years ago and it still held up. It wasn't just the nostalgia either. Watching that first season again made me realize how the show caught on so quickly. I didn't get that same vibe from tonight's new show at all. The early Eastman & Laird comics are still the best comics and the first live action flick is still the best of the movies. I know there are a lot that disagree. That's fine. You're not all supposed to agree. I just think that there's so much good source material out there that they could have made a great show while utilizing some of the great foundation and history of the last almost 30 years. I'm not trying to compare them. I'm not trying to hate on the new show because I know many of you like it. That's great. I just hope you can appreciate both sides of the opinion. I'm not trying to hate on anyone so please don't put words in my mouth and say that I am as it's so easy to start weird little wars on this board. I think I just set my expectations too high whether it be this new show, the new toys (classic or Nick ones), and the new comic series as well. It all just seems forced somehow to me. I can always still reread and rewatch my old favorites though....and maybe that's just good enough for me. The End. Last edited by Yep It's A Trap; 09-30-2012 at 02:55 AM. |

Everyone's opinion is valid. I understand there's going to be a lot of OT fans who don't like the new show. It is inevitable. Thanks for voicing your thoughts so clearly, Yp It's A Trap.
Now I just want to comment on them. I laughed at least twice, both times from splinter. That said, I usually don't laugh a lot at cartoons -- even when a joke hits well it just doesn't make me laugh. That's simply how I am. I do think the humor is more spot on than in the OT though. Did you honestly LAUGH at the OT? How about as an adult even? How many pizza jokes can you stomach, anyway? Okay... About the voices... I've adapted and moved on. It's not even something I think about. Rob *is* Donny to me now. Yes I think it is a weird choice, and one I wish they hadn't made given the confusion and outrage it has caused and will continue to cause, but ultimately the core audience for the show is... as you even recognized... kids. Most have not seen the OT and are unlikely to so they won't even know the difference. Given your avatar I am not surprised you enjoyed Raph the most. Growing up, i was a Raph fan HARDCORE. He was my fav turtle, every time new action figures would hit stores and I was limited on what to get -- 9 times out of 10 i'd get the new version of raph! So I feel you. But I have to say, of all 4 turtles in Rise of the Turtles, I think Raph was the least interesting to me. He had the least to do. Mike made a TON of jokes (most were good, imo), Leo was learning to be a leader and Don was doing all kinds of cool science stuff. Raph was there, and he had some good fight sequences, but overall I felt he had the least to do. So I find it kinda funny that he was your favorite from the ep. Maybe I'm alone here, but I can barely tell that Biggs voices Leo. And it definitely doesn't distract me in any way, and this is coming from someone who has seen every American Pie movie. I like Leo's voice. That's all I can really add there. I also dig the 2d sequences. But I also dig the anime expressions/emoticons/etc. It did throw me the first time I saw it months ago, but I don't know... it's new, it's different (for TMNT anyway), and considering the Japanese influence the entire show has (trained by a Japanese mutant rat, Leo speaking japanese, japanese characters on their throwing stars, a dojo, Shredder being in Tokyo, on and on) I think it is a natural fit. The anime expressionals just makes it feel "more" japanese to me, i definitely don't automatically think Hello Kitty or something like that. Maybe you should explore more japanese manga/anime and you wouldn't feel that way? anyway, sorry for the long post. in closing I just want to say... Nick bought the turtles, and yes that does show. It is no longer a property owned by these two comic book artists, it is now more 'commercial' i guess you could say. It exists now only to make money for Nickelodeon. I accept that. I do not think that means it can't be good, even if it is different. Nick has also made some very fine cartoons such as Last Avatar and Legend of Korra. They are a company that I feel strives to create not just profit, but content is of quality and has lasting appeal. I continue to have high hopes for TMNT under Nick. Call me crazy, I try to see it from all sides, but I honestly do not know how anyone can watch Rise of the Turtles and not find some good stuff in there. Nostalgia goggles are evil guys. Try to take them off. If you aren't capable of that then you are never going to be happy with anything new. |

that was a good follow up to my post. I appreciate you approaching it in a civil manner as I know there will be the inevitable fans to soon jump all over me for disliking it. To each their own.
I do really agree with you though as it does feel exactly like a Nick show. Maybe that's where I'm just turned off at. I enjoyed the first couple of seasons of the 4kids series but that probably was because they took inspiration from the Mirage comics. Anyway, I do plan to continue to watch the series and maybe it will grow on me but maybe not. I'm probably weird in the subtle things that bother me but if the kids like it and if it draws more interest in the TMNT universe as a whole, I'm all for it. |
