I read earlier somewhere it had started filming in Tupper Lake already on the 22nd, any truth to that?

Honestly SAG to me is a joke. Yes it opens doors to lots of projects but it also closes doors to anything non-union and for most actors that's where they will make the bulk of their money. I've met tons of SAG actors and 90% of them are horrid and not worth playing a screechy teenager in a low budget horror affair. It's piss easy to get a SAG card and most of them think that's all you need. They get their SAG card and head to LA then end up waiting tables. Getting them is too easy and since SAG wants money they will accept anyone with the SAG points regardless of talent. Sadly the points can be collected without having any talent either. It takes no talent to sit around on a set for three days doing nothing and then maybe standing in the background for a few shots. You can seriously obtain your SAG points that way and it's kind of sad. |

To be a background actor does not require union membership, although there are both union and non-union jobs.
It didn't cost me anything to register with Central Casting, either. They just took my photo. I got a job right away, too. Paid a hundred bucks. Anyway, I don't want to get too far afield. I was only suggesting them in case Paramount uses them to book extras. |

Not always the case. Some films won't deal with non-union actors because they don't want someone who might just decide to leave with no penalty mid-shooting. Woody Allan shot a film in San Fran recently and wouldn't take any non-SAG extras.

Excellent point. We had union and non-union on the set I worked on.

I actually had the opportunity to be an extra, but I passed it up because filming would have run all night. It was still an incredible experience watching the director work with the actors.

If it's a large crowd scene that requires a lot of people it's not likely to involve the union. Those are the kind of things they'll advertise for people to just show up via local radio. For "featured extras" it would depend on the production. I was cast as a featured extra in Might Ducks 3 through an open casting call at the Mall of America.

Good news judging from the above posts. Let's keep each other in the loop if anything arises! I'd be down to get a group together and aim to get in as an extra.

Found a local news report from Tupper Lake with a couple set photos and neat little tidbits.
