She was in one of the mirage colored issues colored as African American, but as far as I know, that happened only once. And the canon is highly debatable since she was a news reporter in that issue.

I wouldn't call it a complete 180. I never got the vibe that she was trying to become friends with them/join them by telling her story. She was just explaining why she was there and that she wasn't there to fight them. I assume that she planned to hide away in the forest or something and find a new life far away from the foot clan. That will definitely change because we know she is sticking around. We will see more of her intentions in the next issue.
