Is this the same designer who did Transformers? Because they were similarly overdone.

And I'm not knocking the designs, I actually like them. But even I will still admit they're a bit over the top (mostly Donnie). I'm just going to assume that fits the style the movie is going for.

Ew, he did R.I.P.D., I, Frankenstein, and The Wolverine.

It's still hard to tell how much of his concepts were used in the final production. ASM2 was pretty good except for Electro's cheesy costume with the Power Ranger style lightning bolt. Hunger Games was good and Maleficent looks pretty good, too, just from a design perspective.

If you're in that sort of business, you need a thick skin and shouldn't be surprised that people will nitpick and tear a design change apart, especially when it's a drastic change from tradition.

Not visual, but see the organic webshooters reaction for Spider-Man.
Visual, see the disagreement on the alteration of the Spider-man costume for ASM.
See the reaction to X-Men in black leather (some were fine, some outraged)

Even Superman's costume got some heat in both Superman Returns and Man of Steel. I'm not remotely surprised at the reaction to the looks, really, particularly on a TMNT focused forum.

You go to other forums outside of comic book focused communities and you'll get more varied reactions, I'd bet.

I really doubt he could even if he desperately wanted to talk about them. After August, he may be able to comment and if we're REALLY NICE AND LEVEL HEADED about it, perhaps he'd be willing to share some insight to the development process of the designs.

I wouldn't be surprised if its only because they were going with a tough biker boy kind of style with raph based on the way they have him wearing his bandana. everyone knows sunglasses and tough guy bikers go hand in hand

I have no intention to patronize. I am honestly and legitimately curious. I want to understand where they were coming from with this because as of now it looks like the same typical visual stereotyping micheal bay is notorious for. its unfortunate that his work is being criticized as much as it is but that's the risk you take when you deal with something that's stood the test of time. sad thing is its probably not even mainly his fault. producers and directors have to sign of on design if im not mistaken

This is true Twitter a blazes with positive after each release then dies down this goes negative then levels out being mostly positive.

Put like a wise man once said

"People are way more willing to make their negativity known"

People who are content tend not to go out of their way. People who are displeased are way more willing to be vocal and keep being vocal.

I wonder how much the CG models differ from the concept designs, things change under the development, gets tweaked. Can even be slightly altered by the 3D modeler.

Thinking it over, I'm still against the idea of the turtles wearing so much stuff when fighting.

During casual Fridays, it's fine.

Unfortunately, though, Twitter is a poor gauge. As a Forbes article pointed out (discussing Godzilla), Scott Pilgrim had phenomenal positive buzz and was trending daily on Twitter, but that didn't translate to box office success.

Though even then, you cite tons of positive feedback every time something comes out, yet when I look, I don't see the outpouring of positivity myself. Just that people ARE talking about it.

Then again, the show biz saying, there's no such thing as bad publicity (though Michael Bay saying they're aliens may have proven otherwise originally).

Would be funny if Splinter is shown to not approve of all their stuff, but has clearly given up trying to argue with the teenagers.

Good post a lot of good points made on both sides. As for my 2cent I don't care to see all the flash on them. But it doesn't put me off to bad. With all the different artist and people that have been invovled with tmnt over the years I'm used to the characters changing slighlty. This movie could take place in a dimension where tmnts look like this. Lol seriously though just happy to see our boys on the big screen again

It might have been said, but I'll repeat it, part of the reason Bebop and Rocksteady have all their gear and clothing is because they were initially designed that way. Much like the original TMNT design was the simplistic bandanna, belt, wrist wraps and elbow and knee pads, Bebop and Rocksteady were designed with their "signature looks". If they added more stuff on top of those base designs THEN we'd have a reference point, but most redesigns...much like Turtle redesigns aside from this movie (and arguably Next Mutation) keep the basics of the design intact.

Thumbs down

Bebop and Rocksteady as examples is a very poor choice for comparison, first, it was the 80's and in their bio/cards the creators insist that they're punks and that's it, punks wear stuff like that, and they actually wear less cloths that in human forms.
This turtles do look ridiculous not because they're wearing clothes, but for the UTTERLY RANDOM stuff they're wearing. Leonardo has a native american chest plate and Michelangelo has a mexican hippie necklace...

Everyone knows that clothing is the way that people tend to make statements, especially teenagers. They don't have to be practical, but they show the personality and the way they wish to be viewed by the outside. Honestly, teenagers have questionable fashion sense anyway, and I imagine there's going to be someone calling someone' s outfit ridiculous among the four brothers. The fact that they are allowed to express themselves via their wardrobe, actually does help present them more as teenagers. As teenagers, they are dressing in a manner that allows them express how they feel their personality should be justified.

Michelangelo, he would most likely wish to be accepted as a normal person, tends to dress in a manner that is most similar to what he would believe would be an urban inspired fashion.

Leonardo, probably wishes to be viewed as a samurai warrior, and as such wishes to present that appearance by fashioning in armor that would make him appear as such.

Donatello, the techy one, probably has what he considers a good reason to carry all that equipment. Now, I will admit it seems a bit overkill, but there may be an explanation for the glasses, they are obviously Google glasses, and that made the flight was sarcastic.

Raphael, I can't really find a logical reason he's wearing what he's wearing, apart from the way he wears his bandana because everyone knows the bandana over the head just makes you look tough.

The problem is not so much with the clothing, but with how it is random and clumsy. It's like artist just threw random stuff on the Turtles, vaguely connected to what he assumed was their personalitites.

Exactly.. They're teenagers.. and teenagers express themselves through things like clothing. Teenagers are not always practical. The additions make sense.. Donnie the tech head geek.. Mikey the cool party dude.. Leo the leader with an interest in samurai.. Raph the brut fighter with a temper.. They obviously find accessories in the sewer..It all makes sense when you view them in the context of being teenagers, and teenagers often go overboard

I could see them trying to fit into this strange world... Its something that no iteration really got into.. in depth anyway. I want to see this.. I want to understand the turtles more. If this is done right we could be in for something truly epic

A concept where these characters are trying to understand themselves and the world above them I find very intriguing. Remember Mikey saying.. " you think if we save enough people we'll be excepted?" They want to fit in. This along with a rich back story/mythology sounds really interesting and entertaining. This is a new iteration. Its a new movie. Something a little different and I find it refreshing. We've all discussed this multiple times in almost every thread so.. What it all comes down to is different people like different things. There is nothing practical about teenage mutated turtle ninjas lol.. nothing at all

Sorry, but I think you're deluding yourself to expect that. Scratch Liebsman, scratch Bay, scratch the specific people.

This is HOLLYWOOD we're talkin' about here. Making a movie for kids for the purpose of making money and selling merchandise. Going into depth and really exploring their personalities isn't likely on the agenda. Don't develop the characters, just put them in a costume that visually makes it blatantly obvious what their personality is.

Again, I'm making this statement as a general attack on Hollywood, not even specific to the turtles in this movie.
