They were raised underground and did not interact with other New Yorkers, they get their accents from watching TV, that's why Mikey always hasn't had a NY accent. Leo is always more serious almost Splinter-like. Raph is the only one who gets close to the NY accent because he actually sneaks out into NYC. Donnie get's his accent from TV or now we can assume youtube and other internet videos. I was concerned with Johnny Knoxville being Leo's voice, but from what I've heard he sounds fine. When I first read he was cast as Leo, I was very mad. I like Johnny, no problems there, but my actual concern was with how old he would sound. And it's been limited on the footage, but he sounds like they worked with him to lose the accent. He does not have his typical Johnny Knoxville fun loving way of talking. From what I've heard he sounds good. I think it's unfortunate they fired Jason Biggs for his tweets that their own twitter account linked to, because I think he's had the best Leo voice out of anyone. He could have been a good one to use for the movie. |

The second reason is that it sounds like Knoxville is just using his regular voice and so instead of hearing Leonardo the ninja turtle that I grew up with, I'm hearing Johnny Knoxville from Jackass. A third reason is that Knoxville sounds way too old to be playing a teenager. Not only is he in his mid 40s, but he sounds like he smokes two packs a day. Someone else also mentioned that the turtles got their voices/accents from their biggest influences. So where does a southern accent fit for Leo? Did he spend his time watching old western movies? No. I'd imagine him watching old Kung Fu movies. If anything, he should have a slight Asian accent. And thus, nothing about his voice invokes the character of Leonardo.

Because that fits Mikey's character. It's not the same thing. Leo's voice is the odd man out. And Mikey has almost always sounded like that so it's not a huge stretch.

but again IMO i feel like Mikes voice is forced in this version of the film..Leo and Donnie having a more natural sounding character

@Radical Raph
I think you're just fixating over it being Knoxville...All the other actors are mostly unknowns, so you're hearing their voices fresh. You know Knoxville so you're focusing on it too much. Just imagine hearing someone saying I can't believe they cast Tony Shalhoub for Splinter, all I hear is Monk. That's a you problem. Nobody is going to change your mind, I think Knoxville sounds ok, but even saying that, I'm hyper focused on his voice specifically, I don't think we've been given enough in all the footage to make claims like you're making. My only fear was that he'd sound too old, and so far he's just coming off very serious and that's what he's supposed to be. |

Where in the world is everyone getting that Leo is going to sound like a southerner? From the 10 words we've heard him speak in trailers?! LOL For cripes sakes....more and more grasping at straws / bitching about anything and everything possible just because you hate what you see doesn't make the complaints legit. I haven't heard anything that backs up this claim.

First of all, we don't know the origins of Splinter in this iteration. If they borrow from the past, Splinter teaches them how to fight...because that's what he knows. I'm assuming they escape from the lab they were created in, so that's why they're not super soldiers, because Splinter trained them how to be ninjas. Secondly just because they're genetically engineered doesn't mean their perfect, and again, they're not raised by the scientists so as Donnie grows up how would they fix him? They wouldn't know he's visually impaired when he's a little turtle. Everyone saying this isn't the turtles "we" know....There have been a dozen different types of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles stores so this movie is going to create it's own TMNT story like all the other ones, with some borrowing from the past. |

Spider-Man yes has his spider sense as well as proportionate speed and agility of a spider but his powers are the same as Batman or Daredevil being trained and fast enough to react getting shot at. Same with the turtles. Quote:
Do you not think this is overkill? The turtles being bigger, stronger and faster than normal is okay but this kind of over-the-top action just doesn't suit this franchise, neither dies the over-the-top humor or the over-the-top designs. Quote:
For reasons beyond the obvious (that alot of people just aren't feeling this movie) it's sad that it's happening. The turtles had something of a second wind in the 2000s which was quite successful but obviously the movie came too late when everything was winding down. Not that the movie was someting that was going to do that much anyway. However it seems that this go around thigs have really "popped" for the franchise and the stars have really allaigned for a movie to really sell the turtles so it's bad that what we're getting is brainless common denominator movie. Will it be fun? Maybe but they could have balanced that in the sme way the bezt of the current comic book movies are. They had a opportunity here that I doubt will come again anytime soon so it's disapointing they've ballsed it up. |

jokes aside, floyd has a point, and i have seen this many times not just here, but in many different movies..sometimes people have a hard time separating actions from roles of the past, how many people only heard american pie during the 2k12 series? i have a friend who hates when an actor does multiple roles in a year (dont ask i dont get it either)

Sometimes the accent is subtle, but it's there. Accent or not, that wasn't my only issue. It was also his gruff tone that makes him sound more like Raphael than anything. For me, there needs to be a serenity in Leo's voice that makes people calm even in serious situations.

you are putting his normal voice on the character but that may not have been the case what if he came off to timid, or sounded like darth vader or Mickey mouse..what if the voice he used for Leo just didnt work and when asked to change it he refused...we dont know the reasons behind the true change in cast people are all for Pete but we dont know how his performance was...what if it was actually bad? people did the same to Megatron..point Agent Smiths voice or Elrond through synthesizers thnking thats how he would sound..isntead we got a dull roar of a menacing villain

2. Spider-Man is not trained, it all comes from being bitten by a radioactive spider. 3. I do not think this is overkill. I have wanted an adult take on the Turtles for a very long time. I LOVE the 90's movie. It is dark and serious, and fun at the same time. I want that but more. I have Leo tattooed on my leg, and he's got blood dripping off his swords. When I was a kid, I wanted the turtles we had, I'm an an adult now, I want an adult TMNT, because to me they have the foundation to be the most entertaining super heroes. I watch and love the Nick version of TMNT. To me it's childish but adult enough at the same time. In my opinion it's the best version of TMNT we've ever had. I keep saying this, OUR turtles have had MANY different versions, and this will just be another. At first I hated everything about it, I hated Megan Fox being cast, I hated the "white shredder". I hated the Alien Turtle idea. When I saw the turtles for the first time, I was so sad. I watched the first trailer, and thought, good god this is terrible. Knoxville as Leo? No this can't be! Then every single trailer since the 1st one has made it more and more clear this will be a fun action packed movie, and we will see the turtles do things in live action that we've NEVER seen them do before. I cannot wait. I don't understand why people can't allow movies to create their own path. Comic books change the histories all the time, but if a movie does it, it's the ruining it. It's very silly. |
